How to read VIN Information on Chevy Chrysler Ford
Episode 520 Autorestomod VIN Information Classic Cars.
VIN information can be the difference between a run of the mill Mustang and a stock powerhouse. The same can be said for the Challenger or Charger from Dodge. But what are you buying? While we won’t go into the complete break down of what everything means on a Vehicle Identification Number from Chevrolet Chrysler Ford, we will talk VINS and Body Tags.

Much as I love the '67 Mustang I bought; I bought it BECAUSE I can't afford a '68 Charger. Love me some Mopar, but I'm poor. It's amazing to me how so much of classic car knowledge was dependent on a lady protecting all this information from getting tossed out with the trash. Great video!

Great episode guys. You also get the assembly line anomalies as well. A friend work on the ford line in the early seventies. Sometimes if one of the workers new car was coming down the line near a police car the 351 was "accidently" swapped for the 302.🤣

I call B/S. Transmissions also different as were exhaust systems, driveshaft rear end etc One of my cousins that worked at Norfolk assembly(F150 & 250) once commented, he couldn't get a particular rear end in truck he wanted. I said you can't fix that? Said they'd be hell to pay, it'd screw up inventory, causing a build needing the rear end to be delayed. This isn't to say legit screw ups didn't happen, I've seen a red Maverick with blue interior. Ford was aware of it as the notation is on build sheet(also verified by Marti), was supposed to changed to black. Somehow it shipped to dealer and was sold. Owner was trying to sell, last I heard no one was buying.

@@XEFairmont That's a completely different ball game, I can't vouch for plants outside North America. Ford police cars in US were almost always full size, & usually had 428/429/460 big blocks. Small municipalities sometimes bought "economy" engines but were basically same as civvy units. In '72 our city bought Chevy Biscaynes with 350, soon found out they were no match for the 440 Plymouth & 429 Fords they had been buying. State Police found out same when they switched to 5.0 & 5.8 Crown Vic in early '80s. Said veteran troopers were pissed when the rookies driving older 440 Plymouths (affectionately known in service as the "Big Hammers")could drive by them during a pursuit.

VIN/data numbers, something near & dear to my heart. Last week ran across data tag info for my W code '68 GTE Cougar, per one of Don Rush's friends, It's alive and well. Yes it's the one I shed a little tear when I think about(paid $450 in '77, car lot thought it had a 390). I've owned a '69 Fairlane 500 equipped with 351 4bbl, 4-speed & 3.25 Traction lock. Also CJ '69 Torino GT & Drag Pack '69 Cobra Q code with 4.30 gear(yes I have tag info, even dealer sales invoice for Cobra). I don't have a Marti for my Cobra, build sheet tells me everything I want to know. I did get one for my '69 Fairlane, wanted to see how many had two tone paint. Less than impressed with listing(description) of options(I have orig window sticker). In the meh dept, owned a '76 Stang that was #26 searlized at Dearborn. A basic half motor stripper, I believe it's only option was a AM radio.

I would like to find the fate of a car my older brother once had. I don't know the VIN. But it was a 1969 Ford XLGT Fastback, 429 4v, automatic in Gulfstream Aqua. He ordered it through a Ford dealer in Golden, CO (Golden Motors). It had a black stripe, black vinyl roof, black vinyl interior with bucket seats, power steering and brakes. Not sure about A/C. Stereo radio. Ordered in late '68 or early '69. It took 6 months to deliver. How do I determine the VIN for that?

The Marti report is a sound investment; if someone is making fantastic claims about a 1967-2006 FoMoCo and doesn't produce one, RUN AWAY! The Marti report for my 302 Cougar shows a fleet order for a car bucked in August 1967, so maybe it was for a car rental agency. For some reason, the Marti report didn't mention the chrome trim, front bumper guards, or the (factory appearing) vinyl roof. My guess is that since production was delayed over two months by the strike at the engine factory, the extras may have been added to appease a customer with the bucks to make a fleet order. The Marti report also has "gee whiz" trivia, so I visited the address of the dealership that first sold it. :) It's now a parking lot for Dallas County jurors.

There is a Thunderbird Registry. That's how I first found my M&D's '64 T-bird, about 8 yrs ago and found it again at a Mecum auction in Indy, 5 yrs later. It had been completely restored to a Resto-Mod. and had gone from Brittany Blue to Silver and Green. I contacted the dealer in Iowa and talked to him about it and emailed him copies of the bill of sale and the Data card. He sent an email about a year later letting me know the car was sold and going to Dubai.

I have a 1967 Ford f-100 with no paint code # on the vin. Was told when a vehicle was ordered with a factory custom color, the vin code was left blank. Is that true?
@tombryant1104
@tombryant1104 2 года назад
Yes, generally when paint code is blank it was a custom order. In the day Ford would paint vehicles any color they offered on another line for a fairly small price. Usually what the color was is unavailable, have to do a bit of digging through layers of paint to find orig.
@michaelberry8091

@tombryant1104
@tombryant1104 2 года назад
@@michaelberry8091 I hope they were not ordering used ones . Vehicles were ordered by dealer, district assigned by order area. Louisville KY district covered a large area. For '69(and most likely '67) that was Western KY, Central TN & South Central IN. My '69 Fairlane was ordered by Walker Ford in Augusta GA, thus sold in Atlanta district.

@tombryant1104
@tombryant1104 2 года назад
@@michaelberry8091 Special paint was rarely a dealer stock order, usually customer saw color on Mustang, LTD etc and it's what they wanted. Dealer then ordered truck with special paint. Not so much trucks, but was a fairly regular occurrence for cars. Occasionally there were regional promotions that featured vehicles with special options or paint. Those were usually built in batches. I can't tell you any more than what district order originated(you already knew that). I used a owners manual to find what areas were within district. For detailed info, order a Deluxe Marti report. Will list build day, options, selling dealer, also note if it was "stock", "retail"(customer), or "promotional" order.

I have ‘70 Mercury Cougar XR7 Civic and Government Affairs Vehicle ordering district. Value Increase? 351 MCode Cleveland. Trying to see engine match? Location of numbers?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 3 месяца назад
My statement on value is that it's worth what somebody will pay you for it lol. I would have to go to Hagerty valuation tool to find out what the value of the cougar is. Government vehicles don't bring any more or less money than other ones. Though that is a really cool little piece of information. On Ford's most of the time if it is stamped on the engine the VIN number is on the back of the sew in the block on Cleveland's on one of the cylinder head Banks. However if that engine has been rebuilt that may be gone now.

Selling a 69 coupe and the vin shows it’s a 69 but every FB keyboard warrior insists that I am selling a 70. This is because of the side marker light cut-outs in the fenders. (One of one) what should I market it as? Granted it’s a hot piece of crap. Will the repair frame panels for a 67-8 fit/work on the frame rails for the vinned 69?

Here's one for you. My buddy has a 67 Cougar, verified VIN on the fender with no indication of tampering. Have the Marti report verifying that it's a early 67 car with a 289 automatic. However, all indications are that it's a 68 with a 302. Had the interior of a 68, fender turn signals, the 68 tension control rods...everything other than the VIN say 68. Speculation is that it was an internal car and was sent to Shelby for some reason. Anybody got any ideas?
@tombryant1104
@tombryant1104 2 года назад
Whose speculation? Marti or hearsay?? There are certain DSO numbers that indicate delivery other than std dealer. Number 89 is Home office Reserve, meaning it may have been destined for motor pool usage or other internal use. DSO 90 was export vehicles. Ford used other special codes, I listed only ones for Mercury. The VIN is stamped on the fender aprons, usually covered by fender. If they say '67, likely someone gussied it up with '68 trimmings. There are date codes on engine components, intake, heads, block, etc. AFAIK there were no 302 built before late '67. Many very late '67 289 were built in 302 blocks. If it has a 302 & has early '67(or late '66) dates that would be interesting. Date for intake is easy to see, near temp sender, code for Feb 14 1967 would be 7B14. Decode info is plentiful on net.
@motorworksmafia
@motorworksmafia 2 года назад
@@tombryant1104 The VIN stamped on the apron was verified by Marti. It shows early 67 build date. The 302 was taken out of the car by the time my buddy bought it. Everything on this car indicates a 68 though. The interior including steering wheel. The marker lights, suspension, everything. There is no evidence of a wreck or anything like that. I'll have him take a look at the DSO next chance he has. The story we got was that this was specifically built for a guy at Ford corporate, and then it came to California, specifically the city where Shelby America was....that's the story we got anyways...take if for what it is.
@tombryant1104
@tombryant1104 2 года назад
@@motorworksmafia If 302 was gone when purchased, how do you know what engine it originally had? As I stated prior, 302 did not exist before Cleveland changed over from 289, that was late 1967. Windsor plant did not switch production, so both 289 & 302 were available in '68. Yes those plants built engines prior to 351W & C.
@motorworksmafia
@motorworksmafia 2 года назад
@@tombryant1104 ok, I'm not gonna argue with you on that...but whether it had a 302 or a 289 orignally, it still has a early 67 VIN on what appears in every other way to be a 68. Just weird is all.
