Vince Carter's 10-year beef with Toronto included Nelly, a possible body slam, and so many injuries

Over the course of two decades, Vince Carter has gone from maybe the most beloved athlete in Toronto to maybe the most despised athlete in Toronto to ... somewhere in between, but definitely closer to the first thing.
This giant episode of Beef History examines what happened between Carter and his first NBA city. It tells the early chapters, wherein an instant sensation set the bar for a city to which pro basketball had just been reintroduced. It tells of Carter inspiring and entertaining people, making his mark all over the city, and even winning some basketball games.
Then it tells the bad part of the story: Pouting, bad management, injuries, scandalous stories, and more injuries. After all that came a dismal trade, and years of the fans who once embraced Carter booing him every time he visited.
But this story has a happier, softer ending than all that. It just takes a long, winding road to get there.

Please hear me out, Iran-Contra flooded America streets only hitting black neighborhoods Which would cause a rift between the African American and white neighborhoods & divide a common enemy against the military industrial complex. And war. RIP Aaron Hillel Swartz. Reddit creator suicided According to fam&friends Epstein fashion. Just before trial facing 3 years and loads of restitution homes for copying public domain records from a college account that all existed on the internet anyways but he wanted to put in one website for free. every website charged, found FBI Looking into him. Hung. All for knowledge us taxpayers funded, free scientific journals better in the public domain and other public domain documents all in one space for free information. it's like 1984 scary . as if they know that the public and their frustrations and they are doing everyday thing they can to report on these things briefly give me 15 minutes for the people who Might not have been watching the news at that moment. how many times have you learned something about our government and how they did something really horrible recently where in the past half century. the Gulf of Tonkin tricked American soldiers into going to Vietnam , Iran-Contra had a certain pocket flooding the streets with cocaine, MK Ultra . probably some guy at the top of the classification chain in 1 sector of government who was Case Handler and has since worked their way up and like Emperor Palpatine telling people what you want them to hear. We need transparency in these Metal Management career bureaucrats who advised people to do what would benefit whatever their particular goal is as opposed to the americans greater good of our economy meaning and economic equality government I'm sorry I thought this was America? -Randy. the two party system is so they can have their cake(war) and eat it too (Democrat who opposes War)- Eric Cartman. I shouldn't be afraid to make a nonviolent & or non slanderous statement. But I am and that is a clear look in the mirror, the American has now entered the beginning stage of job versus human population ratio. And everyone seems to have middle management Authority while most smart decent upstanding human beings that are smart and well-informed that can't complain because they can't compete with the dollars of the corrupted faction within our government. and people are so focused on their jobs and tired when they get back and stressed for trying to provide that they don't really cared about politics. But I guess like alcoholics our democracy had to hit rock bottom first. Beautifully done. Rewatching this, brining back all those memories and knowing now how it all ended... painful, yet beautiful. I was such a huge VC fan, I used to tape every single game from 1999-2004 and would make highlight packages and made sure I got ever dunk he did. It really stung when VC left, but I never had that same level of hatred the rest of the fanbase did. I even remember recording a few nets games way back when just to get some of his highlights, as much as I hated seeing him in a nets jersey... Years later I ended up buying a Nets Carter jersey. Lol I wish things ended differently, every year Vince would hit free agency I always hoped the Raps would bring him back. But it’s wasn’t to be... it’s bittersweet the season ended abruptly, and Vince didn’t get his final send off in Toronto. I really do hope once everything in the world returns to normal, the Raps bring him in on a 10 day, even if it’s just in the preseason, he suits up.. just to get out there for 30 seconds and he gets that final curtain call.

For so many different reasons, Vince has always been my favourite player. Even towards the end of his career he never ring-chased, instead opting to take reduced minutes on rebuilding teams, acting as a positive force in the locker room of some really young teams. At his peak, there was no one like him. Sure, there were players that shot better than him, played defense better or were better leaders for example, but Vince was the whole package. Of course guys like MJ or Kobe were better players, but Vinsanity was, in my eyes at least, the face of the league and the most exciting talent I've ever seen. What a true champion of the game.

Organizations do win championships. The New York Knicks ineptitude demonstrates this, but so does this story about the Raptors. When Vince played for the Raptors they were owned by people who didn't care about basketball. The ownership group included a Teachers Pension fund. They didn't want to take risks. When it came to the Raptors they only cared about maintaining the bottom line and filling the seats. The Maple Leafs were the crown jewel. If the Raps weren't losing money they were happy. That's why Vince said he wasn't dunking anymore. He wanted to win, not entertain. The organization wasn't committed to winning, nor to Vince. And he realized that when they never truly considered hiring Dr. J, who Vince felt could have attracted other star players north of the border. He then found out the organization didn't truly make an effort to acquire Magloire/Nash - Canadian players who might actually want to play in Toronto. The Raptors fortunes didn't change until the parent companies of the two biggest sports media entities in Canada purchased MLSE. Suddenly the ownership group wanted to win and had a vested interest in winning. This is because they owned the broadcasting networks. Think Turner (TNT) and Disney (ABC/ESPN) jointly owning a franchise - that's basically what's going on in Canada. The new ownership group hired Tim Leiweke who openly stated his goal was to win championships and predicted it would happen. He brought in Masai Ujiri and got out of his way. Ujiri also set the expectation that the goal was to win a championship and that he was willing to do anything required to bring one to the city. This type of talk was unheard of in Toronto. The team became stable with ownership, front office, coaches and players. They spent money and retained their incumbent stars. They built a state of the art practice facility and made bold moves. Obviously, Kawhi being the boldest. He came and last year happened and then he unsurprisingly left. Proving what Vince knew all along. It's tough to get star players to want to play in Canada and one player can't do it alone. For Canada's lone franchise success MUST start at the top because players are not lining up to play here. In the end, there were lessons learned by Vince and the Raptors. Vince certainly wasn't blameless, but I do think ownership bears more responsibility making the situation hopeless for him. If the current ownership group was running the Raptors back then I wonder how different things would have been.
@1billdorito
@1billdorito 4 года назад
It's pretty funny that not one but two MLSE-owned franchises have won championships in this last decade since the Bell/Rogers takeover. Even the MLS team has done three finals runs. Also, it wasn't like Carter was passing to some young scrub, Dee Brown had been in the league for years, was a decent basketball player, had been in several playoffs and played well in several series with the Celtics, and had shot well from the three point line that year and had hit a game winning shot for them about a week or two earlier. kessel was never the player the leafs needed. his playstyle isn't meant to be built around. he was a bad fit for a worse job. but he was also a slouch, and visibly gave up instead of asking to be traded. he wasn't a locker room darling for the pens either. his current stagnation in arizona should tell you what kind of player he is.

I feel like this is a case of media getting in their feelings due to lack of access by shoehorning the one thing they knew about his personal life into every single story, as has been heavily documented as a behavior by sports journalists. For 2 seasons at least, Vinsanity was the most popular & most influential basketball superstar, not just in the NBA but all over the world. Arguably more famous than Shaq, AI, Kobe, KG, T-Mac, Pierce, whoever, at that time. YES, HE WAS "THE NEW MJ" for a couple of seasons.People kinda forget that. All that fame only diminished when all that dramarama in Toronto happened and Lebron , D-Wade and Carmelo arrived.Many people forget that.

As someone who lived through this whole thing, I appreciate how honest and engaging this piece was. Even great Canadian stories tend get treated with disinterest from the American eye and whatever coverage they do get often feels skewed. This was pitch perfect. I idolized Carter growing up. I was mocked for liking basketball in a, town that gave birth to the greatest player ever to lace up skates, Wayne Gretzky. I was riducled even more when things fell apart for putting my faith in a wincy baby from the US who didn't play a tough guy sport like hockey. The day he left broke my sports heart and for years, foolishly I held out hope of a reconciliation til the minute I heard he was gone. From then on I spent years screaming at the TV as he came back and whooped us yet again on another team. But that Grange piece really did feel like a shift to letting that bitterness go. And in return for that forgiveness and reconciliation we got a championship. It's been 20 years of more downs than ups but standing on the other side watching my guys hold up the Larry OB has made that journey all worth it. It's one of the great feel good stories in sports. Excellent work. Thank you.

"No doubt" you make the conference final if he doesn't take a day to his graduation? Hindsight man. In hindsight, if Oakley scored 2 more points, they definitely would have made the conference final. People overvalue gamewinning shots when some bench guy making one more of his shots earlier would have prevented the entire situation.

Not really, the tactics in the last few minutes change dramatically depending on who's winning. You can't say with any certainty who would have won if Oakley didn't miss a lay-up with 5 minutes to go in the 2nd. You can say with complete certainty that they would win if Carter made that shot. But you also can't say that Carter makes that shot if he didn't go to NC, we won't know how differently he would have played.

I've been watching basketball since 1990 and I've played my fair share of games. Vince Carter as an athlete is one of the top 2 or 3 most exciting players I have ever seen (along with MJ). The way Vince cast fear into the hearts of shot blockers and defenders was something to behold. He made every big man of his age look like a bunch of preschoolers. I'm talking about Mourning, Mutumbo, Ben Wallace you name it. We're talking about some of the greatest defensive big men ever and he made them all look like children. He is unanimously considered the greatest dunker of all time. The end of Vince's career in Toronto was a sad time for me. Vince made mistakes no doubt but he never deserved the treatment he got. It proved to me how people's minds could easily be twisted by the media. His jersey belongs in the rafters at the ACC because without him the Raptors would have most likely gone the same route as the Vancouver Grizzlies. He was our first true superstar and one of the greatest athletes to ever walk on the basketball court.
