I wonder whether Ted Turner would have ever gone at WWF so hard had Vince not fired the first shot by scheduling Survivor Series to go up against Starrcade and threatening to withhold WM from any cable provider who carried it.

I think it was more of the fact that Vince threatened cable providers that he wouldn't allow them to have *Wrestlemania IV* if they allowed *Starrcade* to run opposite the *Survivor Series.* That was a ballsy-move by Vince if not a deplorable one. A bigger question would be, what would have happened if they called his bluff? It's not like the PPV business _desperately_ needed the WWF. You still had the NWA/WCW and boxing was huge back the with the emergence of Mike Tyson and the return of Sugar Ray Leonard.

Vince McMahon is a lot like George Lucas. The best successes came when other creative-people were around as a filter to his over-the-top ideas that helped refine the overall-product to be gold. Think about it. The best Star Wars films (excluding the sequel-trilogy) were *NOT* directed by George Lucas. The best times or best parts in WWE history were when Vince McMahon had creative people around him like a Pat Patterson, or a Vince Russo, or a Dusty, or a Jake, etc. Likewise, whenever they run solely with Vince's ideas alone, it usually turns out to be ass. Just like the Star Wars prequels were at best mediocre all being directed by George Lucas.

Mcmahon wasn't a filter. Russo deserves %100 credit. My mom knows how to cook a really good soup. When I try to cook it, it comes out horribly. When I visit my parents my mom cooks me the soup to go. I then get home and add beef, sausage or more tomatoes. I cant take credit and tell my friends I did it, even though I added my personal ingredients. I didn't cook it, my mom did. Same with McMahon. He may add or take things away, but in the end Russo made it.

@@kevinlee9929 Ya. You can tell the difference in story telling from The Golden Era, which Vince Mcmahon was responsible for, and the Attitude Era. You can tell Russo's way of writing. Very gritty, entertaining, good story telling and very orderly. 1999 to 2001 WCW had that good storyline, gritty, entertaining feel to it too. So common sense says they where the creations of Russo. The reason he failed in WCW is because it already had that stenched left by Bischoff.

@Leddie Nickoson Well I'm not sure but I think Russo never wanted to be involved in wrestling. I just think he got into the wrestling business because he loved it and wanted to make it better. And ya I know Vince Mcmahon has done a lot before Russo and after Russo. But you also have to ask yourself what would of happened to Vince Mcmahon and the WWF in the attitude era when WCW was kicking there butt if Russo hadn't have been there?

Wrestling went downhill in 2002 it peaked in 2000 and from 02 onwards it went garbage and un-cool to watch/follow. Nowadays you’re wasting time watching wrestling especially WWE, people have moved on to other things. The teenagers that watched during that time including me don’t watch anymore. We moved on

I think Bischoff's idea of taking WCW off air for a while then a reboot might have worked. Unlikely they could have been real competition to WWE but all it takes is 1 great idea, the nWo led them to kicking WWEs ass for 83 weeks

Not to sound like a WWE apologist, but WWE makes profits these days miles beyond anything they did when Russo was attached. I don't necessarily agree with all the ways they've made those profits, but they're there nonetheless. Russo's mind is very one-track, and it's all about the antiquated Nielsen rating system. In 1998 you needed 4.5-5 million viewers to be #1 on cable on Monday nights. These days, 1.6 million will easily land you that spot. Times have changed, fewer people have cable, and those who do still have basic cable packages have 1,000 more channels than they did in 1998. Context matters.

If Russo is a wrestling genius...why isn't he anywhere? People would need his brain. Russo is full 💩. He did nothing by himself. Vince had to approve anything he ran to him. He help finish off WCW.

@@larrystilltheeman39 They both agreed not to do it. McMahon felt Russo wouldn't work with a large team and Russo felt that a writing team shouldn't need 30 people. Russo was right.
