Probably the single greatest collegiate football game ever played. Also the greatest individual effort by a single player ever in a college football game. 06 Vince carried the dreams of the whole state of Texas on his shoulders.
As a Texas grad, I'm old enough to have watched the 1969 Texas/Arkansas game. Under the rules at the time, that game was also for the NCAA NC. James Street, the Texas QB, was also the difference. Street never lost a game he started in football. As a baseball pitcher for the Texas baseball team, he also threw a no-hitter and a perfect game. Texas was #1, Arkansas was #2 when that game was played and Richard Nixon declared Texas the NC when he visited their locker room after the game. Penn State didn't agree. Ah, the good old days.
I remember watching this game live in HS...one of the greatest national championship games I've ever seen. VInce Young looked like he was playing madden on rookie.
One of those games where you still remember where you were and who you were with while watching it. Incredible game. One of the best Rose bowl games ever.
The Titans owner made 2 decisions. 1 right and 1 wrong. The right one was drafting Vince. The wrong one was letting Jeff Fisher be anywhere near a football team.
I've watched sports all my life. Vince Young on this night was the absolute best. Ya he didn't conquer the NFL but for one night he was as good as it gets.
Yea I agree. He had an abusive coach and still set records in Tennessee. If he would have played for Mike H in Pittsburg… he would have been way better than ben.
Except this actually happened unlike the hyped MJ hyperboles. I watched MJ he was exceptional but he had help. VY in this game is unmatched in any of the 4 sports
The best performance by a single player in a championship game in the history of sports. Vince Young carried that team on his back against a loaded team that hadn’t lost a game in almost 3 years who was basically playing at home. I’ve watched SBs and Brady in 2016 is the only one that comes close.
VY was that guy who you wanted to have the ball whenever the game was on the line, even in the NFL he was the one who would make it or break it for the team. Many come from behind victories from that man. Too bad there was so much controversy with his head coach and issues he individually had with VY bc he truly could’ve been an amazing player to last in the league. Miss watching him
Plus if USC won this would of been 3rd national title in a row. Vince played like a man among boys in this game. He carried the whole state of Texas on his back, and looked cool as a cucumber running the winning TD.
The 2005 OL was a great OL, but many people don’t really understand how much easier the OL’s job becomes with an insane weapon like VY at QB. A defense’s options suddenly become much narrower when the QB is a threat to run for pay dirt on every single play. It’s instructive to look at the Texas OL from two years before, during VY’s RS FR season. Chance Mock started the season at QB, and the OL looks like a team weakness. Average pass blocking, and pretty awful run blocking. When VY takes over the starting job, the OL appears to massively improve overnight. The risk for defenses of bringing pressure goes up dramatically, and defenses’ need to account for the QB run threat also significantly opens up running lanes (for both RB and QB). Cedric Benson goes from a difficult, disappointing start to the season to looking like an All-American as soon as he shares the backfield with VY.
Nah. White bludgeoned Texas all night. Texas kept Bush comparatively well bottled up except for one 26-yard run. White running behind USC’s massive OL was a decidedly worse matchup for Texas than Bush’s speed out in space. Texas was just fortunate when it mattered most.
