When Poinie's Poin ends up being the most normal game in your compilation, you know it's going to be something else. My favorites were the Ultraman and the ErotiTubbies games.

Vinny's comment at 1:17:06 is really funny because tons of Nintendo games were directly influenced by the Ultra series. The cutter ability in the Kirby games comes to mind, directly inspired by Ultraseven throwing the blade on his head and having it boomerang back to him, and the super cutter ability in Kirby and the Forgotten Land is directly inspired by the blade crest of Seven's son Zero. The general aesthetic of Star Fox on the SNES was inspired by all of the sci-fi jets and vehicles in the Ultra Series as well as Mighty Jack, another Tsuburaya produced science fiction series. Hell, Dan Moroboshi has three giant monsters in capsules that he can send out to fight battles for him and recall when they're too weak to fight any longer. Ultraman and Tsuburaya Productions are as important to Japanese pop culture as Star Wars is to western pop culture.

Ayo Ultraman and Kamen rider is the greatest superhero ever. This Giga Chad were popular on my country. Western kids would watch batman beating up some clown, us Asian kids would watch Ultraman beat the shit out of giant abominations. (nah, not really, DC and Marvel Heroes is still popular here lol)

The PS2 Ultraman game is really cool if you're a fan of the show. You basically get to play through the most memorable fights of that season, complete with all the show-accurate presentation. Highly recommended to anyone in Binyot's fanbase who likes Ultraman.

The PS2 era had a lot of the weirdest and wackiest games of the generation. So many companies experimenting to see what works. Sad that a huge number of them like around 90% went bankrupt while the rest were bought and absorbed by bigger companies by the next generation. It truly was a different era.

PS1 also has a lot because Sony in Japan was SUPER lax about their quality control and so there's all sorts of wackiness going on. You think you've seen everything and then you find more. PS1 & 2 was certainly a golden age of a sort.

One of my greatest memories from the PS2 era was renting games at Blockbuster and playing them without thinking about installations or heavy updates.

Now I look at it again, the characters are trapped in some sort of TV show set with no choice but to participate in fruitless competitive games. When in their toy form they have no free will. When people, they have no choice but to participate in the games in front of a camera, but have the feeling of freedom. This is like a personal hell for the characters more than anything

Some notes on Super Galdelic Hour: - Galdelic is a portmanteau of gal and psychedelic. - "QTS Jack TV" is meant to be a hijack. Japanese confused "hi" from "hijack" as "high" (assumed it's about planes) and now people say "jack airwave" or "busjack".

that's not just Japanese people with that last one, native English speakers say things like "carjacking" or "boatjacking", for the same reason, there's actually a term for this kind of thing (where people coin new words or phrases based on a mistaken understanding of a pre-existing one), but I forget what it is. Another example of the same thing (kind of) is people saying "pitch white" or "pitch red" (or any color besides black) when describing a very extreme shade of something, not realizing clearly that the "pitch" in "pitch black" refers to a specific black substance called pitch (and tbh, it shouldn't probably, but it makes me irrationally angry whenever I see "pitch [not-black]", especially in professional writing, as writers at least should really know better than this and understand what the words they're using actually mean imho)

@@lasarousi I'm reasonably sure Super Galdelic Hour was an attempted cash-in on DoA Beach Volleyball's massive popularity during the PS2 era, as there were actually several imitators like this made back then (it's like as soon as DoA really perfected "jiggle physics", a bunch of other developers saw the potential and the proverbial floodgates were opened), but I have to say that SGH probably has the weirdest aesthetics of any game of this sort that I've ever seen

Ultraman for the PS2 was one of the coolest game I've ever played, and it's so goddamn underrated. The fights tend to get repetitive after a while yes, but it perfectly captures the feel of the fight shown in the series, the animation too is also really good. I found it really difficult to pass the early missions back when I played it as a kid, but after you learn the controls and the tricks, you can go ham and style your fight. Watching Vinny play it is such a blast, and I'm glad chat are also pretty hyped about it too. Fuckin gem.

Gotta say though, Super Galdelic Hour has astounding character model quality for early 2001. You could make models shine on the weakest 6th gen hardware, especially when you dedicate two dozen megabytes out of the 32MB available, and then give literal kilobyte scraps to every other resource. Those navels must have at least 800 polys. Funny how the dev of the game is named Polygons Inc, they certainly earned their name. Also, QTs. JOEL SHOULD PLAY THIS GAME LUL. Joel: That green chick is not Fren. Chat, you have betrayed me. PS2: What is my purpose. Player: You render stupidly detailed booba character models with ridiculous ballistics physics. PS2: My god. I mean where do you think jiggle physics came from? To my knowledge, it was Dead or Alive 2 iirc that pretty much originated jiggle physics early in the PS2's lifespan, and it was a huge selling point for the game, such a selling point in fact that Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball was created as a completely shameless spinoff basically just 100% because they wanted to cash in on the desire for fanservice, and Super Galdelic Hour and similar games from the same time were basically other developers wanting to cash in on DoA Beach Volleyball's popularity, in turn

43:47 I think the main reason Vinny kept failing the first level is because he failed the actual level objective, the level icon is a picture of the woman getting kidnapped on the runaway train at the halfway point so I think the game wants you to take a photo of that?

Yes, but you also need to reach a certain highscore on top of that (which requires to be a bit more trigger-happy with the shots and have a good understanding of what to aim for, which is anything that makes the reticle blink, sometimes multiple times in a row)

Super Galdelic was made by "Polygons" they made a short film a year before the game as part of virtual star 2000 vol. 1 (produced by tv fuji) . Looks amazing for its time and as cg in general.

Gregory Horror Show is another interesting little PS2 game based on a Japanese series of animations by the same name. It might not have as much immediate weirdness as Poinie's Poin but there's really nothing like it.

By the way, Poinie's Poin has no English Wikipedia article, and the Japanese one is extremely sparse and unfinished. However, it claims that the creator of South Park was in charge of the English translation, which would explain the dialogue, as well as the voice of the ass duck. It was exclusively released on PS2, and its release was apparently quite limited, although the article claims it is not expensive to buy second-hand. This game is honestly enthralling, I love how utterly stupid and nonsensical it is in every regard. It's only just understandable enough to be playable, and it manages to be genuinely funny, as well as unintentionally hilarious. I love it so much, I have to play this game at some -point- poin.

oh also, keep an eye out for Shin Ultraman in theaters if you're interested. It's a somewhat different retelling of the first Ultraman show. No word on a US release yet but it's getting released in tons of different countries as time goes on It was made by Hideaki Anno (the Evangelion guy, he's also a massive Ultraman nerd), who did Shin Godzilla a few years back and is releasing Shin Kamen Rider next year

At 1:20:00 I really got nostalgic: Dance Summit 2001 was the third entry in the Bust a Groove series, which was basically a fighting game but vs dances instead of just hitting each other. As you can see, they made it into a 4-player and retired most,if not all, the cool and weird characters that made it "popular"(not really, it was always a niche series of games), finally killing the franchise. DS 2001 never got out of Japan, and you can all see why. I hope Vinny gets to play Bust a Groove against one of his musically inclined friends, because while it's indeed a weird rhythm game it's also really fun and full of personality.
