[Vinesauce] Vinny - Shovel Knight: King of Cards (PART 8 Finale) 

Last campaign ends on the first boss fight of the first demo from way back in 2013. If that is not a perfect way to wrap up Shovel Knight, I don't know what is. Best indie game.

The funny thing is, if king knight had played his cards correctly, he could have been the next king after his mom married the king.

It’s even more heartbreaking when you realize that at the end, King Knight’s mom didn’t refer to him as her “Pumpkin Pauldron Prince”, but just “King Knight”

Yacht Club made an entirely new block in the last level of the game JUST so that the Enchantress could use them in her boss fight to be functionally identical to her boss in Specter of Torment. I don’t know whether to call that lazy or genius.

The thing about the ending is, in one respect, it makes sense. It was missable, but way early on is when you found the ghost of Di, and learned that King Knight wasn’t the first guy that Cooper and Bard roped into this, and his dialogue showed it bothered him. Since then, he knew that he was being the pointman for a pair of conmen who’d just replace him if anything happened. Not only that, but everyone who joined the entourage basically just paid lip service while only coming along for the spectacle or for their own purposes. Really, none of these people were actual friends; they sure as hell never paid King Knight any respect, even when they pushed him into risking his life against the Enchantress... Well, that is, none of them save for one, if you got all the medals, which is a bit of a player punch right there.

A selfish man sacrifices all he has for a meaningless title (Keep in mind that the Enchantress is the true shot caller). I didn't think that the funny campaign about the goofy royalty cosplayer would leave me with a greater feeling of emptiness than the official sad campaign that even has "Torment" in its' name.

I love Tinker Knight. He's the only order member who seems to be hoping they aren't evil, but is too caught up in his work to see what his cohorts are doing.

It’s the end of an era of shovelry. And... it’s honestly kind of a depressing ending, too. Fittingly bittersweet.

King of Cards is both my favorite campaign and has my favorite ending. All of Yacht Club's experiences just culminated into this masterpiece. It also just shows how much of a moron King Knight is. He had everything a real king would have, but he didn't care about what a real king is. He just wanted to the hollow title of King. The Enchantress knew it and played into that, by confirming what King Knight already thought: That he was doing most of the work, he was truly deserving of everything. He grew up poor, and the dream sequence clearly showed that at the very least subconsciously, King Knight knows that he's not a king, as much as he wants to be one. So to come to his current state, it's obvious just how delusional he has become. His mother and the King are clearly together, and would have married, making him the prince and eventually rightful owner. That combined with the subjects that trusted him, only reinforces more that he had everything to make him a king, but due to this tunnel vision, he abandoned it all for the title and power. He WAS poor, but his hard work, that he really did do most of, DID make him a rich man in every way, but he couldn't see it. And the Enchantress was the final nail in the coffin to truly turn him blind. The most ironic part of him accepting her offer is, that in the end... he was still just playing the role of a king, like he always has, since the Enchantress is actually the one in power. Despite it being a fun game, the ending is unusually dark, more so than Specter, and they clearly put a lot of thought into making King Knight as rotten as possible in the end. And I can't think of a better way for his story to end by being beaten by a commoner with a shovel of all things. And that's not even mentioning him being beaten up by a traitor and a "beggar from the slums" prior. And finally, the scene where his subjects are hanging and King Knight has the choice to save them... obviously mirrors the one in Shovel Knight, where King Knight, out of all people, had the audacity to ask for help. And if Plague of Shadows is to be believed, then he didn't receive the help he asked for. As wholesome as the original Shovel of Hope ending is, I'm kinda saddened that they scrapped the original idea that the damsel dies and Shovel Knight has to bury her with his own shovel. I think this just proves that Yacht Club are very good at making lighthearted games with twisted and poetic endings. As much as I would die for a campaign for all the knights, I can't wait to see what they do next. Cyber Shadow looks fun, but I really hope it can capture the uniqueness of Shovel Knight. Last thing I expected from a game with a funny ass naming convention that puts Mega Man to shame, where the main character uses a shovel blade, can make me think so much about a character's actions. Those were well spent 15 Euros.

On one hand, I feel bad for King Knight, he ended up being used by a bunch of con men who didn't really care for him just to win a fancy card game crown and title, which not only turned out to be fake, but King Knight then got manipulated and used by a DIFFERENT person in the form of the enchantress. On the other hand, the only reason he was in this situation to begin with is because he was such an ass actual decent people didn't want to interact with him on any meaningful level, so he kinda brought this on himself.

The ending reminded me of Conker's Bad Fur Day. "You don't really know what it is you have... until it's gone... gone..... gone."

Of all the characters, I want to know the most what happened to King Knight after Shovel of Hope. And I mean after the credits

Wow I must congratulate Vinny for beating the final boss without too much issue cause that thing was a bitch on my first playthrough, especially the second phase where I got nervous and fell off the platforms way too many times. Doing it without any Heirlooms or Health Upgrades for the achievement was the worst too.

Ok so the ending, I've been wanting to talk about it for awhile. While I like the bookend of Shovel Knight coming at the end, I wish we got more development for King Knight. Like what we got to to expand on Plague and Specter was amazing. All what we learned here is that he just seems to love (aside from power and wealth) dogs and his mom. Which the latter makes the ending so hopelessly sad. I like how the tragedy is shown but I really wish we saw more after it. We never see what happens to his mom, or much of what he does after the events of the main game; if he ever changes. When this was first announced, I was hoping it would be after his defeat; and he tries to prove himself as a real glorious person, kind of like what happened here before he threw it away (that way we'd get side campaigns that takes place before, during, and after Shovel of Hope). King Knight's ending in Showdown is sad too, but it makes me wish we saw more too. So all in all I like how the tragedy of his choices was shown, but it's an extreme disappointment that I as the player gave to him too; and I guess since I was controlling King the whole time, I wished I could've done something about that too. Which is why I wish we were shown more afterwards, if he ever tries to change; especially for his mommy and whatever happened to her. But I don't know, I do know Plague is a good boy though.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove really is one of the best games of the decade, it honestly feels like cheating to include it but the addition of 3 extra full sized campaigns over the course of 5 years really allowed this game to leave it's mark on gaming as a whole. As someone who got this game at first because some scrublords on youtube talked about it and told me they got their OC in the game, I've really grown to love this series for what it is and I've had a load of fun with every campaign. It's been such a wild ride and I can't wait to see what Yacht Club does next. They've really proven themselves with this.... I MEAN SHOVEL KNIGHT IS IN SMASH BROTHERS FOR GOODNESS SAKE. I feel like that alone pretty much cements how much of an icon Shovel Knight has become in these short 5 years. Don't cry because it's over, be happy that it happened.

Of all the random references to iconic videogames in this, I was not expecting a Final Fantasy VI one. I mean, Cardia's true form is basically Terra's Esper form which then becomes a bizarro Kefka. You can also say that she resembles Culex from Super Mario: Legend of the Seven Stars, if that's more in line with your tastes. Which reminds me, when are we getting a Shovel Knight RPG?

I side with King Knight here. Sure he betrayed all his "friends and family" but what exactly had they done for him? He did all the work! Only to find out that the entire reason for everything was a ruse and ultimately he was fighting for nothing. His goal was always to become King but now he was supposed to defeat the Enchantress because she's mean when there's nothing in it for him? All while his "friends" cheer him on and don't actually help him accomplish the goal? And then go back to living in his hovel hoping that maybe Pridemore gives him the crown later while he's banging his mom? Pah. What if Pridemore has a whole bunch of pretender bastards out there?! King Knight's supposed to get in line?!? No, King Knight took what was deserved for all his work; sure he had to work with an insane semi-deity and swear some type of oath or whatever but he was King! How was he supposed to know about some wackjob with a shovel coming to beat his head in? Why didn't any of his "Friends" warn him about THAT danger?! Mark my words people will come to their senses to how terrible a ruler Pridemore is and wish for the velvet embrace of King Knight. Or he'll just claim it by force again. Either works as long as King Knight is King!

I love that Cardia fight. It somehow gave me Final Fantasy vibes possibly because of her pose and battle spirite, and the crystals.

It is ironic that King's Knight ends up in the future in the same position as the people he betrayed.

Vinny being surprised about the cutscene in Showdown's story mode being the same reminded me of my experience. I actually picked Specter Knight first. So I thought the cutscene was specifically tailored towards him, and my jaw dropped that they would make a unique story for every single character. ... My disappointment was immeasurable, and my day was ruined. That would have been a great idea though, that way all the characters that didn't get their campaign could have gotten a unique story regardless. But I guess that's what they kinda tried to do anyway. The game was already delayed, so no way they would have done more than that, since what they did is certainly more than anyone could have hoped for already. They really outdid themselves, as unbalanced as Showdown is of course.

Oddity looks fantastic, I can’t wait!

When I was playing I didn't realize it was a prequel and assumed it was some alternate universe because I couldn't reconcile how important the cards were to everyone. The end really took me by surprise as a result, but then they made it all make sense.

So it finally ends. Thank you BinYacht games, Its truly has been a roundabout path. Shovel Knight is 100% imo the first indie character that should be in Smash. Kinda feel bad for King Knight in the end though. Not because of the whole Shovel Knight buisness, but in general, i dunno. Wonder if they came up with Showdown while pondering possible dlcs for the other Knights. I know some people dont like it, but i think Joustus was fun. If i were to rank the campaigns itd say 1- King of Cards 2- Specter of Torment 3- Shovel of Hope 4- Plague of Shadows (though i have to admit i havent played it besides first 3 levels)

Am I the only person who hears "Yot Club Games" whenever Vinny says the developer's name?

I sure did kick King Knight's butt after finishing this campaign, and it was satisfying.

Oh god that Final boss reminded me of some the worst bosses I've faced. Judge from Poacher with the fight with no floor, Surtr from La Mulana 2 with the floor destruction.... The PTSD...

I hate how Banjo-Tooie gets a bad rap. It's a 3D metroidvania and it's not frustrating or tedious IMO and I think Vinny would have a blast any%ing it.

Ok so I have defeated everyone in cards including giga cardia and beat the boss too but I didn't get the king of cards feat and it says that I have defeated 97% of the opponents.

The Shovel Knight saga from favorite to hated: 1. Specter of Torment 2. Shovel of Hope 3. Plague of Shadows 4. King of Cards I wasn't feeling King of Cards that much. Hated the card game, King Knight was not fun to play as. It does have a great ending though but nothing can top Torment. I had a blast playing as Specter Knight.
