Askeladd's group decides to go home during winter and Thorfinn wants his duel...he's definitely improved, but Askeladd, despite what he says, knows how the kid works and he knows what to say to push him to make a mistake...and his manipulation works. Everyone is a slave to something, and Thorfinn, even though he doesn't see it, is no exception D:

The scene with Hordeland is an example of Thorfinn projecting his insecurities of how he was too weak to stop Bjorn from holding him hostage. Also small nitpick is that in the manga he doesn't actually tell Hordeland about Vinland, instead he thinks back to that moment. In the manga its chapter 1 = episode 7, chapter 2 = episode 8, and at the end of chapter two we transition to the the first 6 episodes (this happens when Thorfinn is thinking about what Hordeland says). I always really liked the transition, but I can see what the anime was going for with the chronological order.

Askeladd is one of the most interesting characters in this entire series. Hes cruel, yet wise. A smart tactician and an extremely logical type of person. I always felt like he was in his own way training Thorfinn to be more than just a bloodthirsty warrior. Like guiding him to look beyond his rage. But also Askeladd is not a good man. He's no hero. Such a complex character.

Yes, the Canute in Vinland Saga and Valhalla are based on the same historical figure. I haven't seen Valhalla, but from what I've heard and read, they're pretty much set in the same time period, so it's likely that some of the crossover characters you will meet are based on the same historical figures. I've checked some recaps from the Valhalla episodes and while I'm no history buff (I've only read some wiki articles on the history covered in Vinland Saga), Vinland seems to be more faithful to history (while still obviously changing things to tell its own story) compared to Valhalla. Also, from what I've heard from other history buffs, it seems Vinland Saga actually depicts Vikings a bit more accurately than the Vikings TV shows when it comes to clothing, tools, weapons, etc... That obviously excludes the very anime-esque action scenes and superhuman feats pulled off by the characters, which can still be justified in the story by the fact that it's called Vinland SAGA and sagas tend to exaggerate reality.

I love about this whole storyline, that it doesn't do usual "MC whole family got murdered and he swore revenge". It's usually done, so nothing would hold character back, but in this case Thorfinn not only still has a family, but a family who NEEDS him. And yet he chooses to abandon them for years even though he knows that Thors wouldn't want him seeking revenge. I wonder if Askeladd intentionally or not reminded Thorfinn with question "did I really kill Thors?", that Thors had to die in exchange for a kid only because Thorfinn revealed to everyone that he's a son and that got him taken as hostage. Something he surely deep down blames himself

Askeladd is so smart, a horrible person but clever and complicated. Slavery is touched on again here and it’s certainly a topic that will continue to be covered from multiple angles.

Thorkell is somewhat similar to Todo from JJK in the sense that I always appreciate him existing in a scene.

There is a similar line to what Askellad says in AoT, Kenny says "Everybody was a slave to something". Isayama is a fan of Vinland Saga so he might have got the idea from it. Although I doubt either of them came up with the concept.

I've only watched the original Naruto series, but I do know that Askellad is voiced by Madara who I've heard is a character later on. I love his performance in this, he's a great voice actor.

Love the way you guys understand this show I’ve seen a few channels and because they love Askeladd they get it wrong Everyone does that with their favorite characters but you two understand it perfectly in my opinion To think Askeladd is being a mentor for thorfinn just by sending him to his death every time he can is crazy to me but a lot of people think that Great reaction

I'm surprised they didn't fully understand askelad character . They got a lot of things but the most obvious they ignore about how askelad feels about thorfin

I think your impression of Askeladd's behavior is being colored by your experience having seen more of his character. At this point of the story, there's not that much to dig into with his character yet (the most revealing moments so far are his interactions with Thors I think, during which he was definitely dishonorable but also showed some respect and admiration oddly).

Thorfinn may say it's about honor, but I think for him it's more about guilt. As of now Thorfinn doesn't know the real reason behind his father's death (i.e. Floki) as far as he knows, there are only 2 people at fault: Askeladd and him. Thorfinn is trying to make up for this by winning the fight his father should've won, but he's also deflecting all of the blame onto Askeladd so he doesn't have to blame himself.
@schmuck.on.wheels
@schmuck.on.wheels 7 месяцев назад
I think the honor comment is more about why he wants to kill Askeladd in a duel specifically, and he won't just kill him in his sleep (as we've seen). Honor isn't the main thing driving him, but he is determined to kill Askeladd in an honorable way.

@@schmuck.on.wheels I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'm interested in your thoughts to my response. So killing guy in his sleep is dishonorable, but helping burn down a village when the villagers aaved your life is honorable? 🤔

@@KhepriProductions2022 Lol yeah, I mean I guess that's what happens when your moral code and sense of honor hasn't evolved since you were 6. Thorfinn has been incredibly lost for like a decade of his formative years and killing Askeladd in a duel is the one lighthouse guiding him. He started justifying the killing of innocents as a little kid as a necessary evil to reach that goal and at this point it's become pretty normal. It really is such a tragedy.

@@schmuck.on.wheels good point. Thorfinn definitely developed a more narrow minded view of things, pretty much pushed away anything that didn't help with his revenge. Looking at him as an adult irritated me, but looking at him as a kid breaks my heart
