When Vinnie was playing with Sting I sat down with him to discuss the timing on his song, "I'm Tweeked / Attack of the 20lb Pizza".

I dont know if anyone has noticed but the legend himself has responded to me below in what is now a showcase of artist informing the general public. Its still so cool for me to see here his direct engagement to my rather overly critical attack assumption regarding his explanation of his work on this piece but also to read his concession on recognising my actual respect for his work. He cut through ky over critical nonsensense and recognised the obvious but hidden respect for him behind it. I comment about this because i thought i was making am essay for my fellow random internet video exploreres but never once expected that the man in question would ever read my stubborn accusations himself! Yet he responded and im so gleeful of our exchamge.please note his responses. Stern in correction yet kind in concession. I meant what i wrote at the time but thinking it was for the digital cobwebs of general thread obscurity. His spotting a serious tone e in my claims and his willingness to respond and entertain my overall view is just so awesome for me. What a cool cat and I want people who visit here after the fact to know that. To others, always express your mind but with a view to test your views. When corrected learn and adapt. No folly in testing ones view but there is folly in not accepting others corrections. My essay was foolish but i leave here for the lesson of testing ones ideas with a view to learn from the tests outcome

Great interview. I always thought that it was obvious that the beat displacement was just that and meant to be funny (which I think it is), but then I'm a guitarist so I'm just enjoying listening not thinking about breaking it down into the minutia in order to play it.

Vinnie discussed this years ago when this CD was released, and he mentions it above- it's a gag that's meant to sound like a vinyl record skipping.

To be a sobering truth here! Yes, coliauta may well have stumbled across his idea as a "gag" concept of sorts at first but!!! For him to answer questions about his displacement is for him to ignore the context in which his listeners came to hear and enjoy this "gag" born concept! Take as evidence to support my claim of a far more serious musicality behind the beat for both us listeners and the player coliauta, which oddly he never addresses in any interviews about this piece, my next sentence! Who here when listening for the first time and then even after to this piece "20lb pizza" laughed and heard a gag of any sort!? Noone I imagine. Listen to the track. It's a serious composition. And furthermore a seriously fun yet ominous track. The tone overall is dark and even spooky chord wise and tonal wise. The beat displacements happen later in the track as an obscurity and tension maker rather than a clear and obvious gag on groove interpretation. The final composition is a very fine musical piece that is highly respectable. The players clearly respecting their tracking of parts in the studio takes and live performances. Did coliauta once laugh or giggle in his videos of his live performances of this track! Why does he fob off earnest enquiry about his drum part as a gag gone viral rather than respect all of our actual interest in how his part came to be within the composition we all came to admire!? Yes he displaced but so did Zappa, Zappa though made us laugh. Coliauta here made us appreciate that music in four can sound odd time while sounding as awesome as before any displacement. In the end coliauta repeats a set displacement figure. Not by habit but choice. He could have explained how he settled on his final configuration but instead obscures any chance of greater learning by his peers as if to hide his secrets. The groove can be grouped as 9/8,13/8,11/8,9/8,2/4,15/8. I know that he dislikes reducing his groove down to mere maths as it ignores the musicality of his part but he could address that head on if he wanted to but instead described his part and then ultimately the whole tune as a gag. Watch him and his band laugh when playing this track live! They don't

Sir, I WROTE the piece. So, you could argue it all you want. But I (as in “me”) wrote it with conceptual specificity. When I say it’s a gag, it’s a gag. I’m not short changing anyone. Nor am I dismissing that it CAN be subdivided mathematically into other chunks. I’m saying that those chunks are part of a larger phrase in 4/4. That’s it. And because each subdivision creates a new ‘illusory downbeat’, it almost forces the mind to want to create a new time signature. Kabeesh? So there you have it, straight from the horses mouth. Hope that clears things up. Have a good day!

@@brianmcguire5175 and also, thank you for recognizing that, although the initial conception was from a gag, it’s no joke. I respect your appreciation of it as a composition and you said it very well. Thank you!

Thank you kind sir. Big fan of your drumming and your podcast. You set me straight, I had misrepresented your explanation(I confused gag for joke ) and you were right to have set me straight.Further, I am glad for the exchange from a hero of mine. Made my day receiving both of your responses believe you me!

Why is the music not considered, instead of just the drums? I heard the track and thought it was a great displacement technique. The bass does not shift, nor the rest of the band. It’s a cohesive art, and trying to explain each part unto itself defeats the musical group experience... Listen to the bass player...if he’s in four, the drums are just messing with the time...at least in my mind...yes?
