When @Sennheiser asked me to collab for #421 day I jumped at the chance to cosplay as a 1970s news reporter.
I took my trusty vintage MD421-2 and combined it with a period-correct Uher Report Monitor 4000. I have seen reporters on TV, children’s books (Ali Mitgutsch Wimmelbücher for my German audience) and IRL rocking this combination, down to the leather bag.
Recording outside I was surprised how sensitive the combination was - I had used the 421 in the studio, on drums especially for my „Nuclear Drum Loops“ sound pack. Outside it picked up tiny details from the environment -.especially birdsong sounded beautiful. As someone obsessed with field recording on tape, that was a wonderful surprise. I can replace my heavy Nagra setup with the Uher/MD421 in many cases.
The MD421 is a truly classic mic, here is to many more 421 days! Now @sennheiser, how about a MD21 day? I got ideas :-) #ad #anzeige# microphone# fieldrecording #retrotech #reeltoreel

I was a BBC radio reporter in the 80s and 90s. Uhers were standard issue. They were bloody heavy (try reporting from the middle of a riot with one, not fun). They jammed easily unless carefully maintained which was a nightmare when recording news interviews on critically tight deadlines. And the batteries didn't last long at all. It was a huge relief when we migrated to Marantz cassette recorders... far more robust, mine survived through all sorts of mad and bad places. I still have it, and it still works! The 421 on the other hand was bulletproof (not literally, unfortunately) and seemed to cope with every kind of environment from heavy snow to desert dust. Great microphone.

Not only is it a reporter kit, it's a bit of a Hainbach starter kit - excellent field mic straight to tape. Sounds lovely and the experiments just one splice away!

My wife hosted a radio show on BBC radio in the 1970’s and she used a Uher like that for doing interviews. At home, she edited the tapes with her massive Ferrograph tape recorder.

The 421 is my favorite mic! It’s like a 57 but with low end.

Love UHER machines. I have my late father's original mono 4000 Report L - the speed selector is like a manual car transmission :) Also have a 4400 Report Monitor. Great machines.

I had a UHER 4400 report stereo from memory. Did I have some fun using the 4 speed settings. On the slowest speed you could turn bird calls into dinosaur roars.

My go to tape machine is a pair of Uher 4000 report, circa 1970's, one came with original Uher mic. I'd like the 90's stereo version but these combined were half the price. 4 speed, for high definition audio or half speed, 1/4 or even 1/8 speed fun. Although not as nice as a Nagra, still really high broadcast quality, and more affordable. One of mine is an ex BBC radio unit.

Sounds amazing but I just can’t imagine why anyone would try to use a 421 as a handheld!
