In this video I compare four 50mm lenses side by side. The Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar and Meyer Optik/Pentacon Oreston from (east) Germany compete against the Asahi Takumar from Japan and the Helios from Russia. Which 50mm lens (or actually 50-ish) is the best and how would you rank them?

Incredibly informative. So little difference! The concept of lens personality would seem mostly exaggerated. Perhaps flare is one of the few distinguishing factors. That I have seen much variance with.

When I made that video I didn't have the Pancolar yet. But I've bought a Pancolar and it's really a great lens indeed. I will probably make a video about it somewhere later this year.

Nice video Ohjajohh, and a really good side by side comparison, that must have taken ages to shoot. I agree that the Takumar is probably the best but I'm still really fond of the Oreston as well, and of course, if you're looking for a really vintage look, the Helios does tend to have that slightly hazy look. I've never got round to buying a Zeiss Tessar, maybe one day.......

Hi Tim, thanks for your comment. The editing actually took me longest, my poor old laptop didn't really like having four different 4k videos in one frame. I'm not too fond of the Zeiss Tessar. Corner sharpness isn't great, even at f8 (first and 2nd shot) you can see the clock tower is still not sharp. Also it's slow, and wide open it performs worse than the other lenses. Zeiss' colours are nice though...

A good photographer will be happy with any of these four lenses. For most scenarios I prefer the Takumar and the Oreston. If bokeh is important the Helios looked best (for me).

I used a Sony A7 III for all lenses with the exact same settings.

Oreston? I did not know this lens. I liked the Tessar a lot. Against the sun, i think the best was Oreston.

Oreston is the very first version of the later known 'Pentacon 50/1.8' It is my 2nd favorite behind the Takumar.

Clearly the takumar is the finest of all the fourt. However I do like the Helios for golden hour a lot, I feel it generates a more analogical look. I've just ordered an Helios but I will definitely get a takumar.
