I watched several of your videos out of sequence. I like the fact that you are honest with both your technical skills and what you know and do not know. To everyone upset because of how he chose to do this, that's the great thing about owning your own DIY projects, they are full of choices.

Nice job! One thing I'd add: Before gluing the door shut, I might have slipped in an old cassette (perhaps with spindles from the mechanism) to fill the window. It would look more authentic than those empty holes where the spindles used to be. A cleverly titled label could be an option, too. Not to mention how many cassette types and colors you could try to get the right look.

i will definitely try this but for authenticity of it, i might try to use one of the OG switches to turn the amp board on.

Buddy you don't have to tell me this is an 80's boombox...I know all about it, I had one of these around 1989 didn't think much of it then, But it's still from the 80's gotta love it regardless.

This is exactly what I need. I wanted to get an old portable radio to tie to my bicycle. So I can listen to tunes while I ride, have it look vintage with Bluetooth capability

That's great to hear. If you don't end up wanting to make your own let me know. Also, I strapped a boombox to the back of my 80's Honda CT110 and it's a beautiful sight. So I def share your vision.

Whynotmake I want to do one similar to this but I would like the original button volume equalizer and so on to work. Do you think that ampboard can be connected to the original or do you have any other ideas how I could do this? I really liked your video and project you inspired me to do my own, it will be a fun father son project

Ive been looking for a video that explains how to make a boom box into a Bluetooth speaker. But everyone skips the most important parts of this type of video. Does anyone have a link for a video that explains how to convert a boombox tona Bluetooth stereo, but explains it in a way that is understandable for people that dont know anything about stereo equipment?

hello, that's really nice idea, that have inspired me, and my question is: what battery do you use for these projects?
@mendezgraphics7010
@mendezgraphics7010 5 лет назад
great video. how do you bypass the on/off function of the battery? does it stay on all the time or is it wired to the toggle switch you added on the side? also when you recharge the battery do you unplug the bluetooth board? I love this idea and I have been inspired to try this out! Thanks again.
@Whynotmake
@Whynotmake 5 лет назад
So on some of them I've actually moved the switch from the battery pack to a new rocker switch on the side of the boombox that I installed. Depending on the battery pack, it's usually just a matter of removing the switch from the battery and adding wire it to move it to the new rocker switch. The TalentCell batteries I often use do need to be turned on when you charge them so the Bluetooth board is also on, which hasn't been an issue. I've got another video to post soon where I used the Dayton Bluetooth amp board from Parts Express and those boards provide more options regarding power switching, volume, lights etc. I'll try and post that soon. Good luck with your own project and let me know if you have any other questions.

Cool project. Why not use the cassette section to store an aux cable or USB charger cable? It can also double up as a phone holder with the door open.
@Whynotmake
@Whynotmake 6 лет назад
Sounds like a cool idea. You’d just have to figure out a new mechanism for opening and closing the cassette door
@ryansouthard8785

Use contact cement instead of hot glue. Just be careful placing the knobs. Once the two surfaces make contact, they're as good as welded.

Is there any way to keep the functionality of the cd or cassette deck
@Whynotmake
@Whynotmake 6 лет назад
So far, I've only been able to keep the existing functionality on a couple of them. Specifically if I find one that works and has an aux input I've internally wired a bluetooth receiver. Most of the time the stereos I use don't work to start with so I just replace everything.

@nightstrike710 6 лет назад
Ok, this might be lamenting on a high level but I think there is much room for improvement. It kinda hurt, when you just cut everything away and just glued the buttons in place. Would have been a lot better if you tried to reuse (some of) the knobs and switches. At least for switching the power on. I mean, come on, glueing the top buttons in place and installing a new one on the side... A little more love for these things pleeaase. Also, not really an upgrade in my book. Conversion fits better.

Thanks for the info. How much play time do you get out of that battery?
@Whynotmake
@Whynotmake 6 лет назад
No problem. I need to do a test to see the exact lifespan of one charge. In my real world experience the only time I've had the battery run down was when I accidentally left it on for days. I would think you could get 10+ hours of listening time. I'll try leaving one playing overnight tonight from a full charge and see how long it lasts.

Man, you destroyed some fantastic equiment, especially the deck. Sad to see a japanese legend die, how broken is broken? Cassette mechanisms like these you can never find on new made boomboxes. Hook in a bluetooth module, reuse the amp (the amp you put in, never get the full potentional), try to fix problem(s), maybe change the speakers, add a button and you are done. Keep the original features, much nicer and much more respect to something great from the past.
