Thinking about installing air conditioning or replacing the factory system for a better performing unit in your first generation fbody Firebird or Camaro you might want to see what it’s all about. Vintage air makes a great kit, relatively simple install with basic hand tools in a weekend. The kit as is worked great but there is a couple things that we will be modifying on this install for a bit of custom and cleaner install. This is the first part of the series, unboxing and condenser install.

Great instruction Jon. Glad you are doing a section at a time. I always looked at the VA system and thought it would be way to complicated to install.....so far it looks reasonable. Thanks for sharing.

Anytime. This is the first time I will attempt the heater core mod, hope it works. But the rest is fairly straightforward and definitely doable for the average person with some basic hand tools

I have been kicking around the idea of building a concept 1968 Trans Am that Pontiac never built. 498 CI FiTech fuel injection with 5 speed Tremec, Dana 60 with 4 link suspension and coil overs and mini tubs. Vintage air using the stock NON a/c outer heater box. So, looking forward to watching your idea to do it.

A bit of a teaser the heater core update did fit and work. It cost less then $50 too.

Jon!! Ur videos are always so spot on and informative! Love how thorough you can explain things while not becoming too boring for the guy that might be fairly familiar with this type of thing. Great teacher! Just in case you land a contract with motor trend for ur first cable series…I’m the best flashlight holding/lighting technician guy I’ve ever seen. Surprisingly affordable with precision beam placement. We’ll done my friend.

This is a good one! I like the clever way you are setting it up. Smart! Dislike the Florida part. I lived on the gulf coast in Texas. Terrible storms.

I very much look forward to this AC series. I like the fact your putting the factor heater box to keep a semi factory look. I have never liked the factory location of the heater hoses on the firewall. I have seen some hi end pro touring cars route the hoses between the fender and fender well to a 4 port bulk head connector going through the heater fan location. I look forward to the end result.
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage Год назад
My transmaroado I did it like you mentioned a bulk head at the blower Motor hole, looks super clean and I also used the Detroit speed block off plate, welded it in cleans up the firewall beautifully. The great pumpkin project is supposed to be a very close to original restoration so I thought I would attempt something that resembled more of a factory look. Spoiler alert it worked out good. Video coming soon

I did an aftermarket A/C for my 1980 Scout and it was pretty much the wild west on how to mount everything, there were no instructions. I ended up making most of the brackets out of sheet metal but this looks much cleaner. My instructions did say to mount the condenser very close to the radiator and recommended using foam insulation tape to basically seal the two together. It definitely works, I live in Texas and that thing blows cold as ice on a 100 degree day.
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage Год назад
That’s awesome, Vintage air Doesn’t say add additional sealing, your kit does and obviously it helps form what you have experienced

I installed this on my 68 Bird and at freeway speed it cools decent, not like a new car, but pretty good. But around town, stop and go traffic, not nearly as cold as on the highway. After putting gauges on it, I have found the low side pressure to be about 25-30, too high due to lack of airflow across the condenser i am thinking. maybe I should try an electric fan. If its 100 degrees outside, its totally not up to snuff. I drive my daily. Seems to the condenser should be closer to the radiator for better air pull via my LS1 fans.
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage Год назад
I have the trinary switch on this car and plan to run an electric fan for the exact reason you are experiencing. It will only cycle the electric fan when the high side Pressure trips it that way the electric fans doesn’t run all the time especially at highway speeds. If you are thinking about adding one vintage air sells the switches.

Will theses mods work on a 69 firebird? Just got mint vintage air and I love how yours looks original!
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage Год назад
Yes it could all be done the same minus the control panel. 1969 controls don’t come with a new decal. The heater control valve and a/c lines can all be done the same as this one. And not cut the kick panel up as well.

I used the Vintage Air template for mine, however, I still have to buy one. That will be later down the road, hope to see more on this set up. How does the hood latch work with the condenser in?
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage Год назад
Right on. This kit is fairly straight forward and as for the latch no modification it clears everything, the condenser resides in the same location as if it was factory installed. The installation instructions have you remove it for clearance but that is all you need to do.
