Great idea! You should share this with Vintage Air! I love the idea of having the factory look of the original heater box. Vintage Air should make this an option for their system. They could have built it this way.

I think vintage air could definitely benefit from doing this mod and selling it. The advantages are there. The installer could reuse heater core hoses, not cutting on the firewall and keeps the firewall looking original without just a block off plate bolted to it.

Thanks, it’s a little bit of work to make this mod fit but the benefits of not having to cut up a kick panel and firewall are worth it.

Morning all I pulled the factory ac off my74 Pontiac when I replaced the heater cores couple of years ago. I wish I'd had your knowledge when I tried to put the dash and assorted goodies back where they belonged. Anyway after two days of inventing new words about engineers who put stuff where a guy can't get at it it was back together and worked. It put me in the correct frame of mind to do an oil pump on my 04 GMC. No fear Jon, it's just more parts to r and r. Fourty degrees was great Saps running. Those shark bites are really great.

On the large tube that you created a retention bead with a bump of solder. You could create a better retention bead. By placing a ring of solid copper around the tube. Secured with solder. Perhaps 18 gauge wite or so.

Possibly could have done the same thing using AN fittings with NPT ends on them. Have a 70 and 77 I'm going to do something similar with as I don't want to mess with the kick panels either.

I love your channel and the way you present all your info. I am wondering if you may have introduced a future problem for yourself when you used the compressed air to "blow out" any debris (EG: copper fragments) after you first cut the tubing off. Then again after you deburred the ends. You may have blown some copper pieces into the unit, which may someday go into the valve and/or other areas. Again, this is just a thought that came to mind when I watched this video. Did you insert some sort of blocker before you did that, like a small piece of rag or paper towel? About 2 years ago, I purchased a 100% original 68 Firebird 400. It has some rust around the wheel well areas, and some on the passenger rear rocker panel, down where it meets the inner rear quarter door jamb pillar, but the whole car is not too bad at all. I started working on it and then found that I was dedicating all my time to it and neglecting to finish all my other home repair projects around the house I had to do. So I stopped working on it, finished all the home repair projects, and am now ready to resume working on it. I am anxious to work on this ol' bird. I've been watching your channel for that long and getting more enthused after every video. I know I can do this in my home garage too. I am looking for some sort of "sequence" recommendations on this teardown and restore. I purchased every book and CD I could get my hands, to get all the info I could. My high-level plans are to tear it down completely and then go have it media blasted and then epoxy primed. Then I'll tackle all the repair areas. Any helpful info and/or recommendations you can pass onto me would be greatly appreciated. Please, please, please, reach out to me off-line. I am in the Phoenix, AZ area. A few miles from your friend over at Arrowhead Garage. And,,, thank you for giving me hope on doing this.

I suppose it possible the copper pieces could mess up the works. Prevention isn’t a bad idea. Now if it was an air Conditioning line definitely keep Debris out. It would damage the compressor or expansion valve. As for restoring a car like a total overhaul. Start with a methodically dissembling and Labeling parts and hardware. I like to use masking tape to secure mounting hardware to a particular component like wiper motor and trans. Then box it up. From this point opinions change on what and how to do things next. If you want long lasting repair and finish Definitely remove any rust for exterior panels there isn’t any magic product chemically that stops rust that will hold up and last. Media blasting is my preferred, chemical dipping is an option but costly and still Needs sanded and leaves rust behind. Like cutting out the rust and replacing panels before media blasting which is strange for some people. One rust is removed epoxy then body work on top of epoxy, seal then paint. After that reassembly after restoring or repairing or even replacing all the parts. That’s the quick version.

I am waiting on my Vintage Air kit to arrive for my 68 convertible and I am thinking of doing this. Is there a reason that you cant just run all heater hose the same way you ran the copper?
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage Год назад
I suppose it is possible, things to keep in mind the holes in the firewall might have to be enlarged to fit the hose and a grommet to protect from rubbing thru the hose. And secondly heater hose has a tendency to kink and you will need some tight radius to get it routed back around.
@dmeere
@dmeere Год назад
@@VinylVillageGarage - thanks for answering! I had thought about the 180 bends and have found some pre-bent hoses that might work. The grommet is probably needed! Are you ready to come to Cincy to weld some floor pans?
@Pab-B
@Pab-B Год назад
I wonder if you could use adapters and PEX tubing instead of cutting off the vintage air fittings. Prob can't bend that tight of a radius with PEX. So does the Vin air unit have a built-in heater core? Thanks for another great vid!
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage Год назад
Yes heater core and evaporator are preinstalled in their box. Its small and all fits inside the dash.

What size heater hoses are you planning to use? Thinking 5/8" and 3/4" hose will be too big for those 1/2" pipes
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage Год назад
1/2” inside diameter Cooper pipe equals .625 od which is perfect for 5/8 hose the the sleeve i put on the other has an o.d. Of .743 which works great for the 3/4” hose. So end result the factory heater core hoses will work great. Unlike vintage air original design using both 5/8”

@Joe7166 Год назад
@@VinylVillageGarage OR there are 5/8"hoses with a 3/4" end on it for the timing cover nipple..Gates part number 18804 or NAPA part number 10084
