I loved the Paradigm Mini-Monitors! As an audio salesperson in the 1990’s we sold a boatload of these. This was my go-to for Dad’s to buy for their son’s when they went off to college. Along with an everyday Yamaha receiver those little Paradigms could rock the whole Quad! When I was between Martin-Logan’s, I took home a pair of these Mini Monitors and hooked them up to my Krell KSA 150 (150 wpc pure Class A) power amp. Placed them well out into the room and OMG! 35 Hz was indeed possible. Loud, full, punchy and rhythmic, the only thing that belied their price point was the somewhat metallic color of the treble, common then, common today with metal dome tweeters. A Best Buy then, and still a cut above most anything else any where near their price point. Class A amps recommended but not required 😂.

I saw you flash my Polk Studio Monitor 10As before you talked about the Polk 5s. Bought the Polk SM 10As in August of 1982 for $396 & drove 25 miles to get them at a Columbia Audio / Video store which had been in business since 1946. Still have the receipt & it was a open box sale so the price was right. They sit in my living room doing audio / video sound duty. So 42 years later its amazing that they just keep sounding so good I do not want to get rid of them.

I get speaker cabinets from op shops or a recycle places if the cabinets are reasonably okay not knocked about too much then I will sometimes recover them in woodgrain veneer or paint them, if the speakers are damaged I will replace them if I have spare speakers sitting about in the same range. My test tracks for my speakers is a vinyl of ELO Mr Blue Skies I find this one really will test the speakers well just my testing method, love your video. The hole in the base of the Polk is something to do with the base reflex of the large speaker from memory, I used to show how the hole could blow out a candle maybe it was a fade who knows

This was a fun vid! Love vintage speakers. My foray into the world of home audio as a young teen was the Polk Audio 5 Jr+, which had the passive radiator. Mowed a few lawns and washed a few windows to earn these. 35+ years later, I still have them in my home studio/office set-up. They still sound great to me and through all the many speakers I've owned since, I doubt I'll part with these...you never forget your first.

I was a teenager who loves music and the quadraphonic stereos and speakers were the best thing that ever happened to music lovers. Nowadays a lot of people get confused they love the stereo equipment but they don’t love the good music and everyone can know this every time someone is showing a receiver or speakers the music they play is simply horrible.

Sitting with a smile as my Paradigm MKIII 5e floor standing speakers, which I've had since buying them on sale for $300 in 1998 that are now part of my work system, reproduce the sound of your Paradigms from the same era. These were my first experience with speakers beyond my "Bose are the best speakers ever phase".

I agree on the Paradigms. I keep them in my home man cave where they are surrounded by various pricey studio monitors that I kept when I shut down my recording studio. When the cat and I just want to listen to some music I typically play the Paradigms through one of my receivers

I really enjoy vids like this.. Exploring older speakers is fun and sometimes rewarding. Mod the Mitsibushis, that might make a cool vid.. I modded a pair of Pioneer Cs 777 for a larf, they ended up surprising me and anyone who hears them. Thanks Dave. John 💜

I was given some old KLH Heritage made in USA bookshelf speakers. Typical 6.5” and tweeter. I didn’t think much of them, so I designated them as my garage speakers. Every time I go out in my garage, I am still impressed by them. The clarity and presence is really good. They go lower than you’d think. The highs are smooth and not harsh.

I have some Polk monitor 4.5s in my living room and like all the old Polk's the are punchy and do a good job of delivering good sound. Like you said about the 5jrs, fun.

I love your brutal honesty about those Mitsubishis. I’ve experienced the same reaction so many times with speakers like that. They sound like 5 gallon buckets with cheap 5” speakers duct taped in place. Those Boston Acoustic bookshelf speakers on the other hand, I remember recommending similar models to a few friends and family back in the 80s and everyone was more than happy with them.

Nice honest video , great info for a new and old audiophiles/ audiophiles enthusiasts. I think you would be quite surprised/ pleased if you replaced the electrolytic caps , have had a dozen pairs of paradigm bookshelves, titan, mini monitors, se3, ect , found caps almost always high esr and out of spec . High quality tight tolerance low esr caps , don't have to be high priced either , will open detail 👌

old school Polk still hold their own. I have a pair of monitor 7s that sounded get when I got them with a nice sound and great sound stage. With a little time and effort they can be upgraded and taken to another level.

My Monitor 5s still sound amazing. I was astounded to hear how close they sound to the new R series. Imaging, clarity are outstanding. I don't feel any need to upgrade to new. My 91 M5's still get it done with authority!.

I have 2 pairs of vintage polks and currently have the monitor 5 hooked up to a Yamaha 35 watt receiver made in 1983 they sound great.

I bought the Paradigm in 1997, still using it as Front Speaker and my old (1980's) KEF Celeste IV as back speaker (used to be my front until I bought the Paradigm) Still very good sound. Love them both Paradigm and the KEF.

Paradigm used to produce a monitor series speaker called Titan similar to the Atom with a front port. Pretty upsetting they discontinued it. Those mini-monitors really punch above their weight-class!

Was a pity to put the speakers to the garbage. The cabinets could have been saved as well the woofers could have been filtered differently to correct the defects and matched with good midrange and tweeters.

Back in 1975 I bought a pair of JBL l26s for $99, and a pair of l36s for 156 each. Besides updating the crossovers, reforming the surrounds I handed them off to family member.

My experience with speakers is similar to yours. I had a pair of Boston Acoustic A100’s and found the excelled with small jazz groups and chamber music. But auditioning the various speakers you might have made more of a comparison impact if you had used the same piece of music for each one. Having different music did not allow any realistic sense of differences, even with RU-vid’s less than ideal audio presentation. Thank you for video because I am confident many viewers have started out with these kinds of speakers. But to gain any idea of their “signature” sound it would be more insightful if the same piece of music had been used for all the speakers auditioned.

new capacitors in the mitsubishi. Paradigm are just good quality bookshelf speakers. I found and fell in love with ESS speakers. everyone is different.

I have owned this Polk model and as you said, I didn't find them refined. I think as far as speakers are concerned, the better the parts (drivers, cabinets and crossover) the better the result. Nice video!

I'm still rocking a pair of Paradigm Studio 20 v.1's. Rap on the cabinets, and it's as dead as dead can be. Running with a Paradigm Ultracube 10 sub. I still own a pair of Mini Monitor v.3's that I use in a bedroom system with a Paradigm PDR 10 sub. The Mini's suffered from a slight bump in the lower mids throughout all of their iterations, but is easily eq'd out. In '07 I bought a pair of Monitor 7 v.5's when Paradigm revamped their Monitor line. After a couple of years, I hooked up the Studio 20's again, and the 7's were packed away for future use. I thought I wanted floor standers, and they sound great, but I was missing the detail and more precise imaging of the 20's. Nothing wrong with vintage speakers or amps. Nice video.

Listening to your video through my Sansui 881 ( soundcard out into aux input ) Although the face doesn't light up and the tuner section is dead, the amp is sweet and I've been using that for years. For those that like bass, the deeper cabinets usually provide that from my experience as this demonstration shows.

The 'shallow' port on the Polks is because the diameter is small. For a given speaker volume and resonance frequency, the port diameter gets smaller as the tube length gets shorter. The downside of a small diameter is increased chuffing. BTW I love the sound of Polk speakers; I have the Monitors 5 Series II. I enjoyed watching this video.

I have a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 4s and a pair of Monitor 5s. I've compared them to the new R series and was impressed how much they sound the same. I love my M5's. The imaging and clarity is remarkable. They are my main system in the stereo room. The M4s are currently in use in the main part of the house. Both pair are being driven by vintage Denon equipment.BTW I believe the Polk's you showed were later called the Monitor 4.5 They are a bigger cabinet, (vs the M4.) The newer (early 90's) 5b Jr are bigger still. They use an SL2000 tweeter, with a 6.5" driver and a 6.5" passive bass radiator. The M5s I have use the Sl2000 tweet and 6.5 driver with an 8" passive radiator.

Nice job. My first speakers were those Polk 10’s and a Conneseur BD2A turntable in a bedroom that was too small for them with a Kenwood KA 7100 integrated I bought for $200 from an add in the back of stereo review magazine. It really couldn’t control the speakers, an Onkyo would have been better but the system did have a great holographic midrange sound with a lot of bloated undefined bass. I next got Boston A40’s which were better in my bedroom. I turned them upside down and covered the front with felt which made the highs sound more balanced. You might want to try turning your Boston’s upside down.

I comment before on one of your other videos. The Paradigm's sound great on a vintage amps. My modern Yamaha they lack bass and umph, but on the CR-2040 and B-2 they sound awesome.

I picked up some Polk 7-b's mint cond for $60 off a lady who was moving last year. They sound pretty dynamic for a 30 yr old speaker and are my back up, but don't hold up to my Klipsch r8000f's. Nice video to take time and go back and listen and see how far we've come. Some of the mid fi older stuff still holds up if it wasn't abused, but I still think the Jones Pioneers and Sony ssc's probably sound better from today's mid fi.

The strange thing about Paradigm is that their older, cheaper speakers like the moniter and the Phantom(which I used to own) measured much smoother and sounded much more balanced than their new top of the line speakers.

Paradigm, much like Klipsch with their R and RP series, B&W with all their speakers, Monitor Audio with their Bronze Series, and many others, seem to be voicing their tweeters a lot brighter than they used to, to call attention to themselves in a quick comparison in a crowded showroom, and because they see how much that type of sound is benefitting Klipsch and B&W as far as popularity and sales numbers go.

@@DougMen1 Excellent point. Inexperienced listeners usually find bright sounding speakers more impressive on first listening because they confuse a excessive highs with extra detail. Companies know this, therefore sales are better especially when the bright highs are accompanied by excessive bass. B&W has cashed in on this trend. All their Diamond series speakers have peaky, bright "diamond" tweeters and wildly exaggerated bass. And reviewers rave despite these inaccuracies. Even Marin Logan has subtly increased the treble brightness of their electrostatics with each new generation of models because they know customers will perceive the added brightness as an "improvement" even though it's not.

For the Mitsubishi, please try checking the crossover components. Older speakers like this could very well suffer from crossover components that have totally failed, so please just change these before a serious evaluation.

I have a place that gives me free electronics. Some items include Bose, JBL, Infinity, Polk. What drives me nuts is when I only get one of a really nice speaker. But since I'm a woodworker I want to build custom cases that these original speakers just slide into from the back.

I just bought some Celestion 3 Mk2's last week to replace some Wharfdale Diamond 9.0's on the recently updated secondary system in my conservatory - I got them driven by a new/old Cambridge Audio Topaz AM1 amp connected to a matching CD5 CD ( both of which cost me a total of £85) and they sound amazing - paid £45 and cannot imagine any speaker today sounding better for less than £300. So musical with good bass and a rich mid range together with a resounding sound stage that surprised me. They sold lots of these for $250 in the 1990's and they were actually voted Speaker of the Year in 1995 by What Hi Fi - try them if you can.

I built loads of the 3’s when I worked at Celestion. The MK2 differs slightly from the MK1 by being rear ported, a smudge more efficient 👍

To redeem the honour of Japanese audio, I'd like to recommend the tiny Technics SB-F1 speakers. They weren't quite entry-level back in their heyday, but they're pretty affordable now. It's crazy how big they can sound.

@@MrRourkTechnics SB-M2 left a very deep impression on me when i heard it playing Dire Straits’ So Far Away back in 1985. Haven’t heard another spk play this track more convincingly. But the M2 was a rather large spk.

That Sansui 881 is a bloody good receiver. It's distinctively different and better sounding than most 70s receivers including Sansui's other vintage offerings. Dynamic as hell with incredible bass slam...but it's also really sweet and transparent sounding with a quite holographic sound stage. A good sample sounds not unlike a good tube amp which is rare among solid state receivers. Most receivers don't come close to this level of refinement and only a handful achieved this level of subjective excellence. A receiver like the 881 should make most any speaker sound it's very best.

The Bostons are designed to be used right against the wall. That way the bass would be better. The brightness might be due to the crossover cap needing to be replaced. Please try and replace the old cap, then put them against a wall and have another listen. I would love to hear your impressions given this.

I have a set of Genesis 2 speakers plus a set of Epi 120's and a set of pinnacle pn 6+ which are my newest speakers. My favorites are the Genesis since they're 2way with a 10" passive radiator and have some decent frequency range with impressive bass. The Epi tweeter is designed by the same engineers that designed the Genesis tweeters so only difference is the bass a 10" speaker which isn't as good as the Genesis that drives a 8" speaker that drives a 10" passive radiator. Pinnacles are small but wow pretty impressive. I prefer 2 way speakers with a very broad frequency range since crossovers cut out at the frequency they cross at. The more crossovers the more segments of the frequency range missing. This might be why you put the only 3 way speakers you have at the curb ! My speakers max power is 80 watts but I'm using 100 watt amp. Speaker load is what usually causes distortion on amplifier not the speakers even though you hear from speakers, it's not the source so 100 watts to 80 watt speakers you can crank to very close to max volume. I don't usually do more than 3/4 volume and use my open air Sennheizer headphones. You get the highs wherever you are standing and get hit by the bass 😁

I have a pair of Polk Audio monitor 5's. I absolutely love them. The details are suberb, and the imaging is incredible. I loved them back in 1991...and still do to this day!. I drive them with a Denon pma 520. 70wpc. Coupled with a Denon dcd 1560 CD player. The new stuff just isn't as good. To replace my system, sound wise...I'd probably have to drop 4000-5000k. I'll stick with my beloved current system

I do like some base-model speakers. The Wharfedale Diamond mk2, Denon/Mission SCM-51 and Realistic Minimus-7 are all speakers I have and they all punch well above their weight. Sure they have faults but the overall presentation is so startlingly good that any shortcomings can be readily forgiven. Pity about those Mitsubishis, I wouldn't have minded them for experimentation with crossover frequencies, tweeter substitution, cabinet modifications etc. Being at the point of having nothing to lose by trying, I've managed to obtain gratifying results from some relatively uninspiring speakers. I'm not saying I've made crappy cheap speakers into incisive, pin-sharp monitors but I have gained noticeable improvements usually for free. It does no harm to try and I enjoy tinkering around with them. Perhaps I should get out more...

Depending on the resonanceof the bass driver, desire tuning frequency and the box volume you can end up with a small port. Small ports are shorter. Large ports (like transmission lines are larger and longer). The key issue with a small port is (as you have shown) the higher velocity of the air exiting the port and the potential to hear it. If it passes above 5% of the speed of sound in which it potentially becomes audible. Moving the port to back can reduce this as well as smoothing out the airflow using a radiused port. Like everything, speaker design is a compromise.

Is a thirty year old design vintage yet? I’ve been using a six watt tube amp for years now as a headphone amp. I couldn’t find a good speaker match for that amp for years. Not until I got a hold of a pair of Cambridge Soundworks Model Six. They don’t fall apart at low volume, which is important when you live in an apartment. They don’t really do anything else wrong. They just get out of the way and let the amp and the recording shine. Go birds.

Some years back when I purchased myl book shelf CS 11 B.A. . speakers I unscrew the woffers and removed the White Filling... It did exzatley what I expected it to do? it briought out the midrange an eliminated the corse Quality of them...I don't recommended doing this on older larger speakers due to cabinet Vibrations issues but on bookshelfs I Highly receommed IT!

most vintage Japanese loudspeakers had a big woofer but that big woofer had a small magnet mostly made of cheap metal

Oh some of the higher end Japanese spks had huge magnets. Eg Technics SB-M2 & SB-M3. Of cos the cheaper ones usually had tiny magnets.

Happy holidays! Was hoping I could pick your brain… I’m auditioning these 4 speakers: Canton Karat 300, Ohm FRS-7, Dahlquist DQM-9 Compact, Altec Lansing 305. I’m curious if one of the 4 really stand out and if you had to choose one (all in good condition) which would you pick? Sound + looks is important for me since these will be next to my McIntosh setup and my wife is a stickler for appearances in our living room. Also, from a value stand point is one more valuable than the others? These are from a friend so pricing is going to be similar across the board. I just tend to enjoy speakers for 5 or so years and then end up selling them to try something new so I’d like a pair that will hold or increase in value.

I have no experience with either of those loudspeakers. But my opinion would be irrelevant anyway. You will need to try out each speaker with your system/room. No shortcuts. Used gear holds value in general. Thx

The polk monitor 5's (not jr) with peerless tweeter were killer for the money. They, along with monitor 10's represented the best of the old polk to me. The designs were balanced. I re-capped a few sets of 5's and 10's with 5% metal poly caps. They really opened up and couldn't beat them for the investment. ($100 for the M5's and maybe $7. for the caps). Not my favorite for metal music, they could bottom easily. Acoustic, jazz and vocals sounded great. All the 70's/80's Japanese speakers were thump and sizzle to me. None of them represented hi fi or close to it. They were loud, period. I've been to Japan several times to many stereo dealers and they are all junk to me.

None of these are 'entry level' speakers though. When I was 14 and mowing lawns for money to buy whatever components I could save up for... That meant speakers from the same companies that I bought components from, brands like Technics, Sony, Pioneer, Yamaha. Brands like BA, Polk or Infinity were well up the food chain, at least for a kid like me.

Neat. I can (usually) base quality of vintage speakers off of how thick the panels are when I’m taking a gamble. I rarely hold on to them for long. Materials science has come a long way since the old paper cones, so things certainly sound different. Tighter base and crisper highs in newer stuff…but sometimes it gets a little too … analytical for me?

Thats great, I do the same shit man! Whats the power output of those integrated s btw? I got the Paradigm center & dipole surrounds that match those bookies! Also, a set of 90's Design Acoustics PS-9's & Altec Lansing 105's for mid size. For vintage, I have some crazy rare, crazy good, but nothing special (L100 Clones Basically) Audio Spectrum speakers circa 1978.. For Poo Poo, I got some X-overless Optimus STS-1000's that I actually went through the trouble of re-foaming, lol. My daily drivin big boy towers are Altec 501's (1986) I also have the larger active version the 512's which are undergoing restoration. I will be making a video for those when done, turns out they are more rare today than the flagship BIAS 550!

@@MODAC So in "Old School" watts, closer to 100 or so. I have my dads old NIKKO receiver circa 78, claims 80 wpc, sounds like 120 easy! The vintage gear vultures havent yet discovered NIKKO, extremely nice pieces can be gotten on the cheap.

We don't have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get good speakers, there are a lot of speakers for sale in thrift stores, yard sales, and buy and sell local apps. Very good speakers for cheap.

Any small speaker like that needs subwoofers and even floorstanders the sw150 by Wharfedale $150, two or four those will really set off the bookshelf speaker. So wouldn't worry about the lack of bass they probably go down to 65 Hz what is fine

Back in the 80s and 90s, subwoofers were mostly used for home theater setups. I don’t remember seeing any 2 channel systems with a sub. Thanks.
