You don't have to remove the original power supply when you use the terminals inside the battery compartment. The battery is already 'isolated' or has a switch inside the main socket that turns off the battery. Most batterypacks (like you are using) switch off when charging (cannot charge and supply at the same time - can be a little inconvenient however) and have a protection circuit inside. So there is no danger at all. To do what you just did, could be even simpler, you don't have to take it apart just attach such battery to the + and - terminals. It could be even nicer if you want to solder. Crack open the charger (without damage the insides) and put it inside the cabinet and connect (solder) it to the mains input of the boombox . Drill a hole in the battery compartment and fit an adapter connector and remove all of the springs. Connect (solder) the adapter connector to the battery input and charger. Now, when you put in a mains cable, it disconnect the battery, it start to charge and you are still able to use the device while charging. You only need a mains cable to this, the mains cable can be stored in the same battery compartment. Neat, right?

Hi so if i got a battery pack 12v/ but instead of 3000mAh i went for 1100mAh would that just last longer.?

missed the part where you wired it up for the lithium battery. so from now on this radio will be forever driven off of batteries, no AC ever?

Do you think its possible to be able to charge the battery pack using the ac port? Because that would be awesome

Hi! I'm looking at doing a similar mod to my old sanyo m9805L the battery contacts on it decided to stop working about a year ago, it runs on 9v so would the same battery pack you used in this video be suitable or will I just blow up my stereo?

Hi . Very impressive all your videos. !! I like to add your idea in my Panasonic rx-dt707 but this boombox requires 10 batteries D equal to 15V . Any suggestions of batteries in the market..?? Thanks

Hi Whynotmake, Thanks for the great video. I'm trying to swap my boombox power source with a power bank as well. The tag in the back says 'AC 7.5V / DC 110V 50Hz 14W / DC 220V 60Hz'. How do I find the right battery for that ? There are lots of power banks options out there... Do i need a 7.5V output one ? What about the power needed ? 14W seems a lot...
@Whynotmake
@Whynotmake 4 года назад
Hi, I wouldn’t worry too much about the wattage stated, usually those are a little inflated. I’ve successfully used a 12v battery in 9v systems, but have not tried that in a 7.5v system. That might cause damage. It’s hard telling without knowing what voltage the internal components can work with. If you could find or make a lithium ion battery (with bms) out of 2 18650 cells in series that would be your best option as it would be very close to the 7.5 volts.

My boombox also takes 3AA batteries, so I don't know what to do. Any thoughts on what that would be and what I should do?
@Whynotmake
@Whynotmake 5 лет назад
Hi, assuming they are 3AA batteries in series which would give you around 5v, you could probably use a 5v usb power bank to replace the AA batteries. You’ll still have to splice in new wires to the boombox.

You said it will "run for hours" I'm interested in getting an old boombox and modifying it to use lithium ion batteries. Is there a formula for run time based on battery capacity and boom box wattage?
@Whynotmake
@Whynotmake 4 года назад
Yep, you can find the watt hours of your battery and compare that to the power consumption of your device. For the boomboxes I’ve worked on, the voltage is generally 12v and the amp draw is usually around 1amp or less, so 12watts. From there it all depends on the amp hour rating of the battery (I’m using 12v batteries). In my example, if the amp hours of the battery Is 20ah, the battery would last 20 hours drawing 1 amp at 12v.

Thanks! I find them through local auctions, Craigslist, Fb marketplace and sometimes eBay. Ebay is harder to get bargains but they are always available.

Sure, here is the Amazon link- www.amazon.com/dp/B00MHNQIR2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_a9OLBbK7CCYTC . It's a TalentCell brand rechargeable li-ion pack.

@@Whynotmake excellent! Do you notice any RFI interference on the AM radio tuner? Some of these use internal circuitry that can cause interference. Thanks!
@Whynotmake
@Whynotmake 3 года назад
@@crooner2007 so honestly I’d have to check, I don’t listen to am very often so I’m not sure. I do know that if you use the battery pack to also power an audio source like a Bluetooth receiver and it’s a shared source with the boombox itself (like a new lithium ion battery pack) you’ll need a ground loop isolator for the external audio signal to avoid noise/feedback. But for the AM radio I’m just not sure till I do some specific testing.
@crooner2007
@crooner2007 3 года назад
@@Whynotmake that would be great if you could try the AM tuner on the boom box. I researched the Talentcell brand and there's another video where they are using it with ham radios, so most likely it is RFi free. I'm planning on using the pack on my Sanyo RP-8880 shortwave radio. Thanks again!
