MiniDV is qualitatively better than Hi8, and transferring MiniDV video is easier because it is saved in a digital format right on the tape. If it was the year 2001, I would definitely buy a MiniDV camcorder.
However, Hi8 looks like the 1980s and 1990s. So if that is the look you want, they buy a Hi8 camcorder. But if you do, you will need a good capture card. And keep in mind that all electronics will eventual fail once the capacitors on the circuit board begin to leak. So, a camcorder built in 2001 will serve you longer than one bought 10 years earlier.
