I Gut our 1969 Shasta Starflyte and find tons of rotted wood. The build back process is going to be a bit more extensive than anticipated. At the end I walk you through and show you everything that’s bad. #camperlife #camperbuild #campermakeover

5 Years ago I bought a 20' 1973 Shasta Camper at a Real Estate Auction for $40 and parked it behind my shop. when Covid hit my Gf and I decided that we would redo it and use it on weekends when we traveled out of town/state for car shows instead of getting a hotel, $20 at a state park is ALOT cheaper than $100-$150 for a hotel room, It paid for itself the first year we used it. We used the 1 1/2 fiber board for the insulation, we used the plastic shower panels for the walls throughout the whole camper to keep the weight down. We completely flipped our floor plan though, we moved our kitchenette to the front under the nose, put our bed in the back, I made some fold up legs in the rear of the frame so when parked it sits balanced in the back, for couch we bought a cheap metal futon from Walmart and then bolted it to the floor, we made our slip cover for the mattress out of Cheap bed sheets from either Wal-mart or Big Lots that were on clearance, I don't really remember and did the same thing for a bed, we bought a cheap Futon from Wal-mart and then put a queen size mattress we bought at a discount mattress store. We also took out the bathroom so we could build a clothes closet/Food pantry combo, one sides clothes with a couple drawers in the bottom an a rod for hanging shirts and jeans and the other side is for dry/canned goods, for cooking we have a microwave and one of those countertop 9 function air fryers that can be a broiler, convection oven, regular baking oven, a toaster, dehydrator, rotisserie, re-warms food and defroster, the only thing we can't cook is a full size turkey but we aren't cooking one of those anyway, it's just the 2 of us. ,

Omg, I just bought an Old 1978 Rockwood travel trailer. Its like thirty feet long . It sat since the 80's , and I paid 300 for it. lol. I got over whelmed at what the strip down was looking at until you gave me hope. Honestly , I thought i made a big heavy mistake until i saw your video . Thanks alot. Im just gonna go for it. Thanks again. Larry Chambers.

I've never renovated any type of RV but we've remodeled every house we've lived in. Even in a house, one doesn't paint over, for example, a water stain and call it good. I've watched too many videos of people buying an older RV of some type and just cleaning and painting. And, then, the problems start. The only way to find problems, and (hopefully) avoid as many future issues as possible is to tear it out down to the skin. Hard work but well done, and you'll be thankful you put in the time.

wow. it’s crazy to think that all an RV is, is a box of metal. it definitely sets the perspective of why you shouldn’t pay full value for one. that’s also some of the thinnest insulation i’ve ever seen

Yes and yes. The insulation almost seems like it was made to be a deterrent if you wanted to fix it. 😄

I tore down a 1986 5th wheel last summer...very similar rot issues but I discovered the frame was in desperate need of surface rust treatment and reinforcement of shoddy metal support arms .....just finished reframing the floor....next up floor insulation and subfloor installation....fun fun.....summer will bring resealing the entire hot mess😂

Been dere done dat. I try to do things in sections nowadays. I just picked up a 1972 19' Shasta. So this was very helpful to see how they constructed the walls. At this point I think I only need to do the front corners, chase some rot under the counter where the hot water tank was...... and maybe the bathroom floor. But so far a sharp screw driver is saying its probably ok as is. I'm still wondering what holds the sheet metal walls to the wood framing. Just the windows etc? Lorne.

I hate to tell you this my friend, but you went about, the wrong way. To start remodeling a camp trailer, you pull off the siding first so you can check for water damage in the frame. To take out all the walls inside, you only make the entire structure unstabil! Then when it comes to lining up panels later, you find yourself pushing the wood frame around, and it's harder to line things up. And you get a chance to git rid of criters, before you tear out any interior walls. Try it,...it will cut your worry in half.

@@cornelbogdanmacrineanu7962 yes I did but only in one spot because Lowe’s only had 1 sheet. A guy that restores airstreams uses some waterproof plywood. Evidently you can submerge it and it’s perfectly fine. I would’ve liked to have had that.

Adding metal screen to every opening, including the refrigerator vents, is a very smart tip. Dirt wasps will make a mess in any opening they can.

How did you insulate the walls?
@louiseallen355
@louiseallen355 2 года назад
doing this to one that is full of rotten boards. any ideas if the frame is all rotten too will it just fall apart? also is there a reason the arse end is curved or can i straighten it ou?. not a carpenter at all over here
@ProZacksProjects
@ProZacksProjects 2 года назад
Excellent questions. The metal frame should be relatively good, you could get someone to come and check it out to see if it’s structurally sound of it looks too bad. And yes, if the floor boards are rotten along the walls then it will slowly fall down and then apart since that’s what’s holding the walls up. The rear can’t be straightened out unless you made it shorter but that would throw a bunch of dimensions off in the back. Technically it can be done, but there’s going to be a whole lot more customizing to get it done. The curved back actually aids in aerodynamics a little bit but not much. To be honest, it’s not something I thought about until now so I can’t give you a very conclusive answer but that would be interesting to see.

@@ProZacksProjects thank you. i am turning it into a chicken and goat barn so it wont have to travel much unless of emergency, had a wildfire last year that has left me with trauma of needed to be prepared to run. the back end is so rotten it should be pretty easy to customize it so i can put nesting boxes back there. i will be doing video and posting to my youtube Louisesgoathouse if you are interested in following my mess
