Both these vintage calculators by Casio show no signs of life with new batteries. The Memory B-1 and the H1 are similar in appearance and build. In this video I strip them down to find the fault which is causing them not to turn on.

That makes both of us! It'sa good job I checked, I'm not sure what, if any, protection they have. I'm not looking forward to the Astro Wars, the Firefoxes I had in the past were a nightmare to work on lol.

Thanks Gary. I made the video a little longer for you guys who enjoy them. How I managed to drag out a video about cleaning two dirty switches to 45 minutes is beyond me ha ha.

Aww, I like calculator repairs. They are a part of computer history. I have a really cool one I want to do a video on soon. EDIT I use glass cleaner for cleaning things. It's gentler than alcohol. If the glass cleaner doesn't do it, then I use glass cleaner with a magic eraser. That helps get dirt out of textured plastics, but using it too much will wear the plastic down. I use alcohol for PCBs, switches, contacts, and for sticker residue removal.

The video is doing better than I expected, perhaps YT has found the right viewers for it this time. I haven't tried glass cleaner, do it not smell? Those magic erasures are good if you're careful with them. WD40 removes sticky stuff too, if I remember correctly.

Great video. I watched it all. Looking forward to the Astro Wars and Karcher repair videos. I'm not surprised the inside was negative and outside positive. My Super Famicom and Famiclone both have that same negative polarity. Maybe it was a Japanese standard at that time. Thanks for the furniture polish tip. That Commodore 796M calculator looks like a cell phone from the late 90s early 2000s.

Thank you. If you have been in the community tab, you will see there are now two Astro Wars systems on the way, I've blew March and April budget already lol. I got the furniture polish idea from Elliot @TheRetroFuture seems to work really well.

I started cleaning the plastic of an old black and white TV with IPA... I can confirm it did not do it any good!

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good lol. Nine times out of ten, you'll get away with IPA on plastic, but that one time you use it on something you shouldn't, then there's no fixing the damage. I'm not a plasticologist, so I don't know what it's safe ot not safe on, so I avoid using it on all plastic cases now. P.S. I have trademarked 'plasticologist'.
