Compound Bows from the 1980's and 90's still get the job done for both hunting large and small game. The bows are simple to work on, built well, and extremely affordable. Choosing one for a wilderness survival bow will give you a great chance to harvest game.

Don't forget how smooth these old bows are to draw. No "hump and dump" like you get with newer models

Old compounds that were treated well are still good to shoot. They are out there and are very inexpensive. I have two that I bought in 84 and they will still shoot well today.

I was at a yardsale today and picked up a Browning BlackKnight Bow for $15 bucks.. It came with a stablizer, brush arrow rest, hinged self leveling sights and a trigger release.. I think that it was a good deal.. I'm not real familiar with bow's and all of the pro's, cons and specs, but i enjoy target shooting in the yard when i have time. So my little 15 dollar bow fulfills what i need it for.

Good for you with your Bear compound bow. I’m in the process of restringing my old Hoyt Game Getter compound that I bought new back in 1984. It’s a great old bow, and I have many great memories hunting with it.

I've taken a similar approach to yours with archery. I used to shoot PSE, Mathews, and Bowtech bows, but I've sold them and obtained two vintage Jennings bows: a Titan and a Forked Lightening. Fit with modern rests and using a d-loop, stabilizers, fiber optic sights, and release aids, they are much more fun to shoot than the newer bows. They are also more accurate because they utilize smoother eccentrics rather than radical cams. Considerably quieter. #MCGerkFish65

It is said that in the older compounds, that the limbs had an ability to last 50 years. Depending on how much (or little) it was shot, you should be able to get a decade or more out of an old compound, and if you get 20 years out of a $20 bow, it was more than well worth every penny.

I always hunted with firearms but never a bow till I got the $10 Bear and got my first ever bow kill with it I hunted for 30 years without a bow and got my first bow kill in my late 50s a few years back I like it better then firearms now I get out early in the season it is much easier to hunt them hell they seem to walk right up to you, in firearms season it's like they are all hiding already hardly seen anything .

I want to learn how to shoot a bow. Someone gave me a Browning Explorer II XL Series for free (70s), but it needs a bushing and when I got to the archery store the guy behind the counter told me to "throw that thing in the trash, they don't make parts for it anymore." An older guy overheard that and came up and looked at it and said "this thing is in great shape, definitely don't throw it away." So now I have this bow that I have no idea how to shoot, get a part for, or even what the actual part would be called. The guy at the only archery store around here doesn't seem to want to help me. @BurningRiverBushcraft

To lighten a compound bow you back off the limb bolts with an Allen wrench. Don't back off to much and back off the top and bottom limbs the same amount

I still hv martin m1 tiger ex my old man, wondering how to adjust it draw lenght/weight, anyone can help ?
@BurningRiverBushcraft
@BurningRiverBushcraft 5 лет назад
There should be 3 slots in the wheel on both ends. If you change the slot you change the draw length. You will need a bow press. An archery pro shop can set you up. Draw weight is adjusted with Allen screws on the limb pockets.

On my old Ultimate Rambo Bow style I have A to E written slots. I need the longest Draw Length possible. Should I insert cable into the deepest or shorter slot ? Thanks, Jean-Marc from France.

Back off the limb bolts. Make sure to take off an even amount from both limbs.

Either train right handed or you'll have to get a new left handed bow. Wouldn't it be nice if they were ambidextrous.

Hello Friend I really enjoyed the video. I recently obtained such a bow (Jennings Gale Force) , lacking a string. I have no experience in archery and certainly not in bow operation. I will be Grateful if you help me with the length of string and how to replace the string with this bow Thanks aviv
@BurningRiverBushcraft
@BurningRiverBushcraft 4 года назад
The string size should be marked on the bottom limb You will have to find an archery pro shop. A bow press will be required to put the string on.

Not sure on that model. I am more interested in bow under $100. $50-75 is even better. If a package included arrows or broadheads I may stretch a little. Good luck in your search.

Hey man, love the informative video! Question, I'm a bit new to archery but hey; I was new to firearms at one point too. A coworker of mine knows I'm trying to dip my foot into the archery realm, and she buys and sells a lot of archery gear (her and her husband are avid in the sport). She recently bought a vintage compound bow and offered it to me for what she paid; $27. It's a Darton Trailmaster Compound Bow With Fingers, Arm Guard, Camo Limb Covers; String Should Be Replaced, Comes With A Darton Quiver And Some Arrows For Practice - Three With Broadheads, Quiver Needs Mounting Bracket, 46" Long My question is, would this be a good starting point for me? I figure $30 for the bow, another $30 or so to have it restrung and setup for myself at a sporting goods store, maybe $5-10 for a new quiver mount; and I'm all in $60-70. I just don't want to buy something I am going to "outgrow" in a months time.

@@BurningRiverBushcraft I'd agree but I honestly don't know if it will... I'm about 5 foot 11 and the bow is 46"? No idea what that means to me.. seems I need to head to Jay's tomorrow and do a little research

Is the reason you say the wheel isn't durable because it's made of plastic?
@BurningRiverBushcraft
@BurningRiverBushcraft 5 лет назад
The plastic wheel rides on a steel axle. The cables that the string attaches to is vinyl coated steel. The plastic wheel wears before the axle or the cable. Heavy use high end bows never used a plastic wheel.

I wouldn't buy a 30-year old anything (home vintage stereo, bow, car, bass boat). I've read on forums that steel cables will go bad and sometimes break. Some suggested finding a little newer bow that still has parts available. PSE dealer told me this month that the steel cable for my 1994 PSE bow isn't available (purchased bow new).
