In todays Video, we dive into all things Jointer, Craftsman that is. I picked up this Jointer several months ago, and finally found time to restore, and get it back into working condition. This should be fun, and educational at the same time. We finished up the Jointer Restoration today, so this will complete the series!

Thanks for all the comments and questions on this video! I have replied to most of you guys about the circumstances behind the Blade Setup Video, but, shortly after making this video I had a really bad injury on my table saw. So obviously no woodworking for a while after that. 2 surgeries, alot of rehab, and a house move has happened since this video. I am in the process of getting everything set back up so be on the lookout for a Blade Setup Video. If you would like, you can check out some of my other videos, plans, and articles on my website. www.alldaydray.com

Great video, reviewing your video, help provide me with some information. I purchased this 113.206931 over 25 years ago, and did some maintenance, but needs some serious maintenance in the infeed table. Now than I am retired, I have more time to do some serious maintenance with my jointer. Great tips and nice job restoring a classic jointer. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Ernest

@@DraysWorkshop yeah it was strange, I thought that looked like the Fite's old house and then the Allen's house and I can't really remember the people that lived over on the right with the vacant lot but they were nice folks. I'm glad y'all did something with all those rocks on the side hill. Thanks for the video btw, it was super helpful with the jointer I just bought.

I recently restored one of these and for some reason, the blades went flying off when i tried to put wood through it. Glad I wasn't hurt. Hoping I can figure out what I did wrong.
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 3 года назад
Man I know you were scared! That was a close call. The only thing I could think that would cause that would be maybe everything was cleaned/lubed too well and the 2 set screws that hold the blade in might have slipped due to excess lubrication. Did all three come out at one time? They are held it by a wedge and 2 screws on each one. I have a little video on setting the blades if that might help, definitely give you a closer look at the blades of it

That cast iron base is so nice. Mine is a 113 so the base is just stamped sheet metal. You did a beautiful job on the bare cast iron and a nice restoration overall. Did you figure out where the washers with a curved side and a flat side go? (Lying just above the locking bolts and studs at 7:47.) It looked like you installed them with the jointer upside down. With the jointer sitting it its normal upright position, they go on top of the leveling studs AFTER the studs are installed in the jointer base, between the studs and the dovetail bases. Their purpose is to take up angular misalignment as the infeed table is leveled. Please don't think I'm being critical. After trying to level my infeed table I found one of those little beggars on the floor and had to figure out where it came from. After I put it in and flipped the jointer back upright I found two more on the floor that I KNOW weren't there before. I had loosened all of the locking bolts to get the one washer back in and that's when the others dropped out. I ended up removing the infeed table to make sure all four were in the recesses in the tops of the leveling studs and had to go though the leveling process again. For anyone looking for a good manual with lots of exploded views you can search for the 113.206801 or 113.206931 jointers. None of the manuals have a good drawing of those special washers,
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 4 года назад
David Dale hey David. Thanks for the comment buddy! I actually did get them right. And I don’t think you are being critical at all, I need all the help I can get sometimes. I had taken a lot of pictures before I broke the leveling assembly down altogether. Yeah the manual I found was ok, but that’s why I still took pictures just to be clear. I don’t know if I have seen the sheet metal bases while looking online, I’ll have to check it out. Thanks again for the comment and I’ll try and search for that manual and see if I can post another link. Have a great day buddy!

@@DraysWorkshop There are a few things on this machine that are simply a PITA when it comes to disassembly/assembly. I took the cutter head out of mine so I could dunk it in Evaporust. It wasn't bad; cleaned up in 2-3 hours but there was rust in the bottoms of the slots for the knives and wedges. I was concerned that the soft rust might prevent parts from seating properly. Here's the link to the best manual I've found. It's for a 113 but there's not much difference. www.manualslib.com/manual/150216/Craftsman-113.html I ended up removing the infeed table to put those troublesome washers back in and put a little grease on top of them so the infeed table could slide over them without displacing them. This is all very recent and very fresh in my mind. I have about .006" of dip in the middle of the infeed (right to left, low in the middle) like a swaybacked horse. I doubt there will be any impact as long as I don't try to joint anything less than 24" long. It will be a pain to lap out but I will eventually.

Looks good. What did you end up doing for belt tension? I have this jointer and it's seems to just be eyballing it on how far you let the motor slide down the leg.
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 5 лет назад
Hey Frank! Thanks for the comment! I actually didn't really have to mess with the motor position or tension on this one. It was placed about perfect when I got the jointer. I did however have to move it left/right a little to get it to track right. I could take a picture if you would like and if it would help you. But I'm like you, it kind of just seems to be eyeballing and looking for a good tension as on mine it is just 2 U brackets that are holding the motor support on.

I just bought what I believe to be the same model of jointer you have and it looks like I have the same problem you do. My blade guard doesn't come to rest so that it covers the blades. In the middle of the spring (where the spring ends) that attaches to the blade cover lines up with the holding screw instead of being perpendicular to it. Did you ever find a way to fix that? By the way, great job of restoring.
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 4 года назад
J F I’ll be honest buddy. I haven’t fixed it yet. I messed with it for a little while and the spring feels like it still has some compression left on it. I went back later and threw some grease on the rotating parts hoping that would help, but it still doesn’t pop back like I would like it to. Maybe there are just old and worn out but still feel ok, I dunno! Thank you for the comment and question! This is what I did this for, I ended up getting in a table saw accident right after this but I plan on starting back up soon! Hope to see you around
@David-hm9ic
@David-hm9ic 4 года назад
The fix that worked on mine was to remove the guard, polish the pin on which it rotates and clean the bore in which it rotates with a large caliber bronze gun cleaning brush. Lubed it with general purpose grease. All you have to do to remove the guard is to pull the cotter pin. No need to remove the parts around the spring or the spring itself unless it has been previously removed and installed backward. On mine the cotter pin was original, long and tough and it was wrapped almost 180° around the pivot pin on both legs. I replaced it with a much shorter cotter pin that was the same diameter but stainless steel and much softer than the original. It only needs to be spread a little so it's easy to remove later if necessary. There is zero pressure on the cotter pin so no need to get carried away with spreading it.

Hey Don! Sorry for the late Response, I didnt get a notification of the comment for some reason. I am going to make one, as since then, we have moved houses, and I about have my shop up and running again. When I post one, I will comment on here with the link! Thanks for the comment!
