Join me in my studio for some impromptu live quilting.
Working on a vintage flying geese quilt. It requires all my attention so there won’t be a lot of chatting throughout. I’ll talk about some of the challenges at the beginning, and then it’s heads down get-it-quilted time.
Enjoy some new music during today’s show.

11:00pm Wed. 6/28/2023 When you say it is watching paint dry it is so much more. For me it is feeling and seeing the rhythm. I have only done a few quilts so I really need that. I have spent a lot of houres watching. It makes the muscle memory so much easier. You are so unique and I love it. I need to feel the rhythm. So many shows will give a technique, then jump to the end and say how easy it is. I will watch every "boring" show you air since I am learning so much more in your process. Thank You, Kathy

I have quilted quite a few vintage tops from eBay over the years. I always have a runny nose and itchy eyes when working on them. Presumably it’s from dust and or tobacco residue. I just take an allergy pill and press on. Always worth it in the end.

Judy in Oh-I’m a fairly new quilter who has been given many older quilts that have been hand pieced. They always have wonkiness, especially on the borders I never thought of eliminating part of that outside to have it squared. I’ll have to try. Thank you for all your tips, they are extremely helpful
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan Год назад
That’s not always the case, but I’m this one, pieces were actually cut right though l, so it looked like someone cut the edge after it was sewn. We made the decision to square it up, both for measurement, and to get nice looking piecing along the edge. We did lose a smidge of size, but it looks far nicer.

I have had my Bernina for 5 years now. I have the best luck using Topstitch needles. 100/16, sometimes 18. I always always keep my bobbin at 200 or a little under. Never over 200 as Bernina recommends. I usually use Glide on top and bottom. If I have the right color, I will use Superior So Fine in bobbin. Hope some of this helps. And I’m sure you know to not have sandwich too tight. I have pretty good luck.

I really enjoy how you explain what you are doing at the beginning of the show. I wonder how you would feel about “talking out loud” about what you are thinking when you are doing certain things on the quilt? Sort of talking to yourself out loud. Lol, I’m thinking that would be super helpful. I know you were trying to concentrate but it wouldn’t have to be constant talking. I talk out loud to myself all when I work. Not all the time when I work sometimes. It would be helpful to a newbie like me.
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan Год назад
I think some episodes I do that more than others - it does depend on how much I’m needing to concentrate on what I’m doing😁
@snickerbuckle
@snickerbuckle Год назад
I like the split screen too! Love watching your process on a vintage quilt. As for the repeated thread breakage, I’m wondering if it’s a timing adjustment. With your other machine having a round shank needle, a wee twist to the right would usually fix the thread breaks. Doing that trick is essentially making a timing adjustment because it deflects the eye of the needle toward where the hook is about to grab the thread through the scarf of the needle. You can’t do that with a flat shank needle so a true timing adjustment might be needed in the actual hook mechanism.

I did have a full service done since this video aired, and it is MUCH better.

Straight stitching to the left is where mine breaks a lot. I Am on a gammill.
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan Год назад
On a Gammill that can sometimes be helped by turning the needle a hair. It has to do with the timing that the bobbin hook assembly is catching the thread, and basically you're tweaking that. Pretty sure you could find some RU-vid videos on how to do that.

Where do you get all the vintage quilts? I've looked and, other than eBay, which I'm skeptical, I can't seem to find any. I live in vacaville, ca. close to Sacramento. just love watching you quilt. You have a very calm, kind, teaching style! love your set up and your "mister producer". great gig!!!

Why did you clamp the backing after stabilizing the top & sides?
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan Год назад
I prefer to do the stabilizing when all layers are relaxed. Then when I attach the side clamps, it all has equal tension. I feel like if I clamp the backing first, it will overall get pulled more than the top.
