This 1950's Coldspot Superwall Freezer was a dismantled backyard relic was put back to pasture to rot. Today, we bring it back and make it a useful addition to the household. Come check out the video and see my failures and triumphs reviving this beautiful piece of Americana.
Refrigerator model number: 106.5322110
As far as I can find: This fridge is circa 1953. Manufactured by Seeger appliances, It was sold by Sears Roebuck and Co under the appliance sub-brand Coldspot. it is a vertical deep freezer.

I’m impressed by your aptitude to pick up and follow normal refrigeration practices, and improvising where it calls for it. Brazing is def a learning curve. Not sure about Seeger Appliances, but prefix “106” on a sears product model number is for Whirlpool Corperation, which is who they primarily used to manufacture for them. Very seldom do you see any different prefixes on Coldspot equipment.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing it with us. I also love saving old refrigerators and post a lot of videos about that. It's often that the old units seep out refrigerant over the years. Back in the day; General Electric had a patent on fully hermetic "metal-glass fused" electrical terminal pass-through connections. Everyone else was using second-best designs. They often used rubber and other natural nonconductive materials to seal the electrical connections going into the compressor. As a result, it seeps out over the decades. What you did, just recharging it, is going to last a long time. The butane test is a good one to do, however there is one concern. If you were to leave that in, the rubber electrical seals can be permeated and swelled and damaged. Going back with R12 was the most sure-fire way to get it going. That short test with butane isn't going to hurt it. Many of the old systems have been proven to work with other modern refrigerants, no modifications. I can't identify that compressor by looking at it so can't say if it has been tried or not. Again going back with R12 was a wise move. Antique Appliances is a great source for gaskets, that's for sure. Your restoration of the cabinet looks awesome.

I am confused ...i also am very ignorant as to how the refrigerant works...why use butane first then r12 to test if it was working?
@davida1hiwaaynet
@davida1hiwaaynet 2 года назад
@@FuzzballToday Good question. I can't answer for the original poster; but I expect this is because butane (R600A) is very inexpensive and if it leaked out, or the compressor turned out to be bad; no great loss. R12 is expensive and hard to obtain, but is safer from a flammability standpoint. So it's better for long-term use once the system is proven working.

Looks good man. I love seeing old things being revived and reused. Also I appreciate the fact that you considered using different gauges to not contaminate. I was taught that the contamination is actually due to the different types of oil used with different refrigerants. I've been out of the professional refrigeration game for a while now but I would always have a separate set of gauges for different oils (one for poe, one for ab, etc...). Good work!

@BurnoutsAndRotorblades - I seriously wish you lived near me! I'm a Hot Rod guy that loves everything vintage. I bought a 1950s GE refrigerator , restored it - chrome, paint, new door seal, etc. Was working great for a good while - maybe just a coincidence but my gal increased the temperature control , and soon after, it increased in temperature . The Fridge isn't as cold as before, the freezer isn't working. Don't know what to do as every appliance serviceman acts like I have the plaque once I tell them that it's vintage

Very nice! I restored a 56 Marvel trailer fridge for our 46 Airstream that is still yet to be completed. Total cost after breaking the fridge down to nuts and bolts and then powder coating, insulation, new compressor, and wiring? $2300.00! And it will only hold 4cu ft. But your beer will sure stay cold! Oh yea, anyone need a white and candy apple red Marvel? :o) Long live old school!

Just wondering if you would know on a 1950 or 52 cold spot which wires you would hook up to a new relay for three and one there’s two whites to blacks and one red for the compressor relay
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades Год назад
I struggled with the electrical so much. There are some resources to help figure out what phase each post on the compressor is using a multi-meter. Then do the same for the relay and plug. make sure you draw a diagram. That is what I had to do. I would recommend this approach because you never know what others have done with the wiring.

Can you still get R12 with the flourescent dye for future leak checking...
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 3 года назад
you can inject an r12 compatible dye. Though, these systems are pretty sensitive to the amount of gas in the system. Adding dye might upset the balance unless you're smart enough to figure out how to add and subtract fluids to make it all work.
@OhPhuckYou
@OhPhuckYou Год назад
R12 has been banned from the US since 1993. There's a direct replacement refrigerant (I don't remember the type off the top of my head. I want to say HotShot is the trade name) however. Sometimes you can find black market R12 snuggled in through Mexico or China, might even get lucky and find old stock R12, but it won't be cheap. I had no clue R600a (Butane) was compatible with the mineral oil used in R12 systems. I know to charge a R12 system with R134a, one has to change the oil to PAG oil, replace the orifice tube/expansion valve, and change service ports.

Yesterday I took it to appliance repair store. They said compressor is good but need R12 and they don't have that anymore. Any idea where I can find someone who still does this kind of work having some trouble finding someone who can refill it with R12 also they said it would have to come from a big tank something about needing high pressure to do it 240psi . I'm in Chicago thanks again
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 3 года назад
I ordered R12 from ebay. risky at best buying old stock r12. However, it might be the only way to get r12. see if you can find an old timer that still has the knowledge and equipment. If not, maybe convert it over. have a new compressor put in and flush the system out. Then fill it with something more modern.

BurnoutsAndRotorblades thank you for your response but you wired a 3in one relay I bought one but am not sure how to wire on the compressor end one pin is labeled with S which I know designates start one pin is labeled w and the third one is not marked how did you wire
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 3 года назад
I dug deep into some forums and found a way to test the circuits on an electric motor and find what winding goes where. I labeled the wires coming out of the compressor and tested and labeled them appropriately. I bought a cord and a "hard start relay" and read the instructions. Then I spent about 3 days reading about how to wire a/c electrical. After that, I spent several hours drawing out wiring diagrams. When I had everything close, I temporarily wired everything and plugged it into a power strip with a circuit breaker. When that didn't catch on fire, I put everything together and it worked. To be completely honest, I'm not sure I could do it again without all the research. here is a video that helped me out immensely. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NxseKu60kYA.html
