I've started a new series! I will be testing out all my vintage gadgets I've been collecting over the years to see if they work. In this video, we are testing out a 1950's/1960's vintage Universal portable hair dryer. Imagine setting your hair while you eat breakfast in the morning, instead of overnight?? Do you think it will work? Hope you enjoy this new vintage gadgets series! Thanks for watching!

In the late 60s, my mom would sit in bed and read or knit with that same dryer, curlers, and picks. I would fall asleep next to her from the sound of the dryer. I think your hair looked fabulous straight out of the curlers. Very glam old Hollywood.

I am a child of the fifties, I had one of those which I used religiously, over my metal brush rollers! I just found your channel and I have to tell you that those years were the best of my life! I was born in 1944 and grew up in NYC. I had a wonderful childhood and wish I could back to those years, I really do! Especially now with the way things are in the world. This brings back wonderful memories. My mom had a portable hair dryer, but the case was a hard case. It was "portable " in that you could carry it to whatever room you wanted to use it in. (Unlike hair dryers at the beauty shop). I used it as well as those rollers and picks. I always though they were itchy! And, they were not very sturdy and would sometimes use two picks to hold them. My mom's picks were pink. The hose often fell off when we used it- like when we moved or turned our head. My mother-in-law still used those rollers until she passed away(in. 2010). I think the looser curls were due to the curlers. Although, I thought it looked lovely how it looked freshly unrolled and unbrushed. Have you ever seen the Mary Tyler Moore episode with Rhoda using a hairdryer like that. She feel asleep with it on.
@jahmeb

I wish I had a dime for every hour my friends and I spent in these dryers. We used to actually go to sleep with these on! I had long hair and it would take 2 hours easy, if not more. You have to remember that back then there wasn't too much immediate gratification like now. Like Spirits of Fashion I used big rollers too. But that was the 60s and straight hair was in. Your dryer may need to come out of the case to get better ventilation so it doesn't shut off. Love seeing this again! Thank you!

Brush curlers came and come in different sizes. We didn't take the bonnet all the way off to check the curlers. 20 minutes isn't enough. Mom generally left it on 30 minutes then checked the curls. Usually it took 45 minutes to an hour from wet hair. I HATED those curlers! I was happy when the foam curlers came out although we had to watch where the clipping bar went across the hair or we'd have lines everywhere. . lol

In the 1980s when I was a kid there was this old Mary Kay lady that lived by my house and she would have really cool garage sales . One time I bought a vintage Mary Kay 1960s dryer from her and it was the same style that you have in the video . Haha - Dippity Do! I used that back in junior high! I had those rollers with the brush inside, but mine were black AIR. Oh, those pink plastic picks! I'd forgotten about them till I saw this. My mother thought I was nuts for sleeping on rollers and I never really got the knack, although I used to pretend that it was comfortable. My hair was stick straight. I think I would have needed industrial cement to make it hold the curl!
@oksills
@oksills 2 года назад
I used that little item faithfully, every Saturday afternoon/ evening for many many years! I, all of my girl friends , and my mom’s friends used it the very same way. We used a wet set, with or without Dippity Doo. I used the brush rollers and even with my fine, NOT thick, below my ears cut, it too at least 11/2 -2 hours to dry. I only used the high setting. The brush rollers were supposed to be very tight, much closer together, placed in an organized pattern and many , many more of them. The picks, will hold all the rollers very tight , even the bottom ones, when you change their angle against your head. It was a real time commitment, especially girls with thick , long hair like yours.

As a child I had really long hair. Every Saturday my mom would shampoo my hair and pile it onto my head and put the bonnet over it. I too would sometimes fall asleep with it working. There was a little indent where you could put a couple of drops of perfume to give your hair a nice scent. Did the unit come out of the case? If so, and you left it is it could have overheated. Portable meant you could take it to different rooms to use, not walk around with it on. Btw, the mug is no where near vintage. All cups, glasses and plates were much smaller back in the day. A cup for coffee, or a drinking glass, held maybe 8 ounces.

I used to use one of these in the 60s. It took one hour to dry my hair which was thick and set in brush rollers. I would only do this once a week since it was so time consuming. I would put the cap on first then put in the hose and twist it to lock the hose in. I would give myself a manicure while my hair was drying. Thank you for sharing this video for us.

I love your idea for a vintage gadgets series! It's so funny, because that is the exact hair dryer I used in the '60s to try to straighten my hair. I had to use giant rollers to achieve this, so the bonnet barely fit over the rollers. It took an hour to dry, and I do remember the bonnet pinching my ears, like you said. Great video!

My mother had one of these when I was little. I don’t remember the nail dryer on hers, but maybe I just didn’t know what it was. Mom used the same type of hair rollers. Wow, my mom had one of these when I was growing up. And yes, curlers. Please ladies, don't go out in public with curlers in your hair! That was a huge turnoff for people back in those days. You love vintage gadgets so much, that I think you are a reincarnation of someone who lived back then.

My mother had one of these and I do remember it taking her a long time to dry her hair. Then Sunbeam came out with a hard plastic round suitcase that turned into a hood (like at the hairdressers) and part of it sits on the counter/table to hold the hood.She owned that one too.
@streetofdreams4538
@streetofdreams4538 4 года назад
Was the Sunbeam hood dryer faster than the bonnet one? I would think the bonnet would be faster since the hot air was contained and directed into the hair, but probably the hood one was more powerful?
@tholieeileen60
@tholieeileen60 4 года назад
It takes about an hour under the dryer. It is not portable. You have to sit still for the dryer to work. You are suppose to attach one curl to the next with the pin. You did not leave your hair under the dryer long enough.
@Sno92White
@Sno92White 4 года назад
Hello! Cute series, I love it! For the bristle rollers, you need to go down in size. I used that size when I had long, mid-back length hair. The shorter the hair, the smaller the curler. I use pin curl clips (the mini clamps) or bobby pins to set the curl instead of the picks. My mom grew up in the 50s, and she used these curlers up to the late 60s. I hope you try these curlers again!

I would call this a success. I still have mine from the late sixties. I used it clear up through high school from time to time. I don't really know why I still have it. Haven't used it in over 45 years but it is in excellent condition. It was the curlers you used that caused the curls not to be tight. I used those same size because I just wanted loose curls. Sponge rollers are what may have worked more to your liking. Great video though!!!

I couldn't find many affordable vintage ones (plus some modern ones seem to have better and faster drying technology like the ionic feature). More recently-made vintage ones like Windermere seem more efficient, but who knows? Her portable hair dryer actually looked like the hood from the salon but was portable....no chair. She also had a steam curler set from the 50’s and it doubled as a face steamer. I donated them to a local thrift store and kick myself for doing so. My mother gifted the dryer to an elderly lady who our hairdresser visited once a week to do her hair. 🌟WARNING: I love vintage gagdets and was just about to buy a bonnet hair dryer, when I came across another vintage RU-vidr who mentioned that many vintage dryers contain asbestos!! I looked it up and sure enough, many if not all hair dryers made before the mass ban and recall in 1979 were likely blowing asbestos fibers into the air! The risk is particularly high for hairdressers and others who were exposed daily, but who wants to take such a horrible risk, considering some people apparently developed a disease just from washing work clothes exposed to asbestos? I might buy the modern Conair or Andis bonnet dryer instead and preserve my peace of mind. But we should spread the word! I also learned that other vintage electronics like toasters, TVs, radios, ovens, and irons contained asbestos that would often shed, as well as some vintage toys and insulation in vintage houses. Buyer beware!

THE DRYER: I suspect she is an "old lady" LOL, but to be honest most women did not use them. I will do a wet set in the evening and because I have so much hair I will turn the dryer on my hair for sometimes as much as an hour before bed and leave it over night… for me, it’s helpful. I might need to get it cut really. But I like using my dryer. It helps me. 😄 but if your hair dries over night just fine over night I can’t imagine a person needing both 😅

I'm watching your video right now. I love that you are living and trying retro items and your house is beautiful. If I could share a few things with you. First the curl, you weren't using the pins quite right. The pins should have been used up against the the head and pinning the curlers to the head. Next the hairdryer is portable in as much as you can carry it to where you want to sit and dry your hair apposed to going to the beauty parlor. Oh yeah the hairdryer over heated because you were supposed to take the dryer out of the carrying case. The hose was always a problem because as you saw when it heated up it would fall off of the bonnet and if you have thick hair as I do it would get hot and burn your neck. That is why we would put a towel around our necks. It did take a while for your hair to dry that is why most women or young girls would take their baths and wash their hair in the evening and have all night to set and dryer your hair. After drying we would also sleep in the curlers. If you did happen to take the curlers out before going to bed you had one of two options. Style your hair and wrap your head in toilet paper so they style wasn't lost when sleeping or to wear a satin night cap to hold your hair in place. I'm really enjoying your videos and hope this was helpful.

Professional tip for you. The amount of hair that you should use, should be equal or lesser than the length of curler and no thicker than the width of the roller. Putting thicker and wider sections of hair on a roller will result in uneven drying. Then when under dryer, do length of time with heat, usually 35-45 min, then at least 5 minutes under cool. The cooler air sets the style. Do not remove curlers until entirely cool. Doing so may result in softer curls. Hope this helps

That's why I love my Lady Dazy, but I think the smaller roller would have definitely made smaller, thighter curls. It was still pretty.

Yes the problem was the hair roller not the Dyer for the tight curl 👍🏼

I didn't have a dryer like that, one one we had was more like the kind in salons, but it was in a case and popped up. You put it on a table and sat backwards with you head under it. Worked great. I remember sitting there reading or listening to my Snoopy radio. Definitely longer than 20 minutes though. Good memories. 🐈 Your hair looks super cute.

I found this cool to watch especially because we had one growing up. I remember it being hard to put the bonnet over the rollers too. We used to hold in the rollers with Bobby pins. I don't remember what brand it was but it looked very much like that one. Amazing you paid $2.00 for it! Loved watching the demo!

You have to put the pins in at a certain angle x it’s best to put cap on first and like you did put hose in after, I used to have the hose coming out at the side. Turns off for safety

I used to roll my hair with brush rollers and had a dryer like that one. It took up to an hour to dry from shampoo to dry. My hair has no curl of its own and I usually wore it in a pageboy.

I think if you place those stick pins so they are against your head with a little tension on the rollers it will hold them tighter. When you took the curlers out the loose curls around your face looked just beautiful!

Hello! I must say I was lol-ing when you were sipping from your mug! Between your facial expressions and your mannerisms, I think you're the most joyful RU-vidr I watch and it's delightful! May favorite part of every video is the "he-llo, myyyy name is La-ci" with all the great inflections! Also, I actually loved the way it looked fresh out of the dryer with all the curls. Such a cute look on you!

The machine is old, so it may not dry as well as it would have back in the day. It most likely has an auto-shut off for overheating. And we used to put Dippity Doo gel into our wet hair which would help set the curls while drying

Do you ever get nervous using the cords with any of your vintage appliances? The prongs on the plugs seem so fragile compared to what we have today! I literally got one of these because of your video - oddly enough I bought it just for relaxation. Something about the sound of the dryer just puts me in the zone! I was a little nervous because it had such a firm grip once I put it in the outlet. It's secure for sure, but I'm not used to it. Do you ever have that experience? I want to usr it without worries. I'm super excited about it!

My aunt had a Lady Sunbeam Beauty Bonnet XL which looks similar. It had an XL Cap (Extra Large) for using Jumbo Rollers and FOUR Heat settings - Cool, Low, Medium, High plus Three Air Settings Low Med High and on the highest setting - High Heat Plus High Air It would get her hair dry in 35 to 45 mins. 10 to 15 mins. if she did a 'Quick Set' on dry hair by dampening it with Breck Set or Dippity Do. before rolling. It did not have a timer but it would shut off if it overheated as a safety feature.

I love the idea of this series!! I'm a sucker for vintage gadgets! These take forever to dry and curl your hair. Hours from totally wet, it's why they made them more portable so that you can carry on doing things. Even though they're not very portable with a power lead lol. The easiest way to put them on is to attach the tube and put it around the back then put on from the back, still totally awkward though. If you use a smaller barrel roller then it takes even longer to dry. For 40s/50s looks where you want tighter curls the best way is upstanding pin curls. It'll still take ages to dry tho.

Yay! I’m so glad you like it. I am too! I’ve collected a bunch and I’m so excited to start using them! Yes! I was thinking pincurls would work better with the cap for sure. Maybe I’ll have to do an update video and try that instead.

There's an episode of The Astronauts Wives Club where one of the wives is walking around with one of these! She did her daily housework walking around with the strap over her arm while her hair set! ❤️ If you've not watched that show, you'd love it! The set, props, and costuming is to die for!!!

Now I just have it on my shelf 😄✨ I remember seeing an ad for one of these hair/nail dryers in my sisters Barbie booklet! (From the 60's..I was intrigued to see what it was all about).. you should try the nail dryer part sometime too! 👍💅

Pretty look on u, nice '40s look!! Smaller sections r key. Sections no more than 1/2 the thickness of the rod or curler, is the rule of thumb I was taught... In Cosmetology School (I went) they stress thin sections in everything when you're rolling or cuting and coloring/perming. For precision cut'n/dry'n time and processing perms or coloring evenly. Just fyi.. to save time for u next time.

I just subscribed and I am loving your channel! You are bringing me back in time. It was a wonderful time of life. I was born in 1960 and my mom would set my hair as a kid, and yes, it took about an hour to dry your hair. Sometimes I would fall asleep with the dryer on. I still have my 1970's lady Schick bonnet dryer with green daises on it. My Grand Daughter loves to use it when she comes over to spend the night. Have you done a video on what interested you and your husband in this era?

I'm 49 and I rember those hairdryers. My mom had one and used it still in n the 70s and I used it in the when a teenager and I would put my hair in a wet set for big hair in the 80s. She used some sort of clips for the brush rollers to help hold them in. I used sponge rollers. I tell you this was much better than sleeping in rollers every night imo. Of couse I graduated to hot curlers and then a curling iron as I got older. PS: It used to take about 40 mins to 1 hour to dry completely.
