Early Spitfire Mk.1s had some visible differences when compared to the slightly later variants which were used during the Second World War. Join me on the workbench for this video as I build & review the Hasegawa Supermarine Spitfire Mk.1 plastic model kit in 1/72 scale - a vintage boxing which still seems pretty good despite its age!

Its funny looking back at these kits as in the 70s and 80s Hasegawa along with Heller were seen as more sophisticated than the run of the mill Airfix, Frog/Novo, Revell and Matchbox offerings. Just goes to show how far the hobby has moved on since then, particularly the remarkable rebirth of Airfix.

Yes, Airfix has managed to turn a lot of things round

Great little vintage build! I’d really like to see you tackle a vintage Heller kit! Preferably one of those early war French bombers.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have a 90's (i think) F84 from Heller in the stash to do - and I think a 70's Bf109 as well

Just starting modelling again after a very long hiatus, still using brush with my paints and will have to get primers and varnish. Very helpful in giving me ideas going forward. Any links to where its best to get paints etc?
@ModelMinutes

It really depends on where you are, you can get them from many IRl and online model shops. If brush painting i would recommend the Vallejo paints (with some thinners mixed in) but I do have a video where I talk about my experiences with paints on my channel: General discussion: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WO0SZ1sGGcs.html Humbrol Gen 2 hand painting test: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1oJCv1iRWQg.html

You definitely should do some more weathering, it could really help elevate these old kits where they lack in detail. Go all out with it!

Hi Matt. Firstly, so glad to hear you're doing better and good luck with the new job. Secondly, well done on another superb build. I think I built this particular model myself years ago, albeit I built the later version. As you say, still a good little kit despite it's age. Personally, I'm glad you didn't weather this one as sometimes it's just nice to see them as they are! Looking forward to the next build 👍🏻

Good outcome, I had mixed results when making masks for camo, but seeing how it turned out in this build I will persevere!
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 8 месяцев назад
You can do it! Other methods i've used a vinyl stickers pre-made from other companies, normal masking tape cut to shape, and sticky-tack
@NickAndrewsFaulkner
@NickAndrewsFaulkner 8 месяцев назад
@@ModelMinutes Cheers Matt, I need to refine my curve cutting, then hopefully it will be fine. White Tack was OK but a bit feathery at the edges, however looks OK on the lovely Airfix Tomahawk (another fan).

Great build of an early Mk.1 Spitfire. Hope its now sitting proudly next to your other Spitfires, in your collection. Also, that is a brilliant idea for the camouflage pattern. Scan the instruction sheet into your PC and rescale it to the size of the model. Then print it out making a set of mask templates. Might have to try that out one of these days. Keep up the great work
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 8 месяцев назад
fortunately for many kits, the instructions are already on scalemates so scanning isn't always a necessary step :)

What always bugged me about this one was the wing reinforcement strakes above the wheel wells. Now you do see those on some Spitfires in museums, the IWM one being a good example but, as far as I know, those were a late and post-war modification done to some surviving early mark airframes that happened to still be around at that time, mainly those with the early "B" wing.

Nice clean build. This would be a good beginner's project due to the low parts count. One way to deal with the transfers silvering is to use a sparing amount of the extra thin to the offending area. Treat it like dry-brushing and remove most of the solution when applying, otherwise it can do nasty things to the paint.

I think I built this one too, back then, compared to other kits from the same era this one stood out with having recessed panel lines and looking closer to the real Spit.

I've been using very fine monofilament fishing line for antenna wires. Not as weak or fragile as stretched spruce and a spool will last for a long time.

Nice build Matt! I've come across this masking method, but what percentage increase in size did you use to make the camouflage the correct scale from the smaller instruction sheet? Perhaps an idea for a future posting?

My question is why so many spit fire doesn't that get kind of boring like the other kits your building I don't do many split fire basically there all the same
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 8 месяцев назад
sometimes, building a kit you have already done can be fun for various reasons (practice, trying new techniques etc) but not all spitfires are exactly the same - this is from a company I hadn't built before in a slightly different version Plus, as a review channel, I wouldn't be able to offer much of an opinion on a kit if i only built one example from one company

Not only that, but it has the strenghtening strips on the wings - those were added in late 1941 on very early Mk.Vs before they did it internally (mind you - that predates the Universal wing used on the Vc ). It was a retrofit for the Mk.IIs still in use with OTU's and other second-line units. The one in the Science Museum is such a retrofit aircraft, and it could very well be Tamiya used that as their template.

if you can get the masks to sit flush to the plastic, the spray cans tend to have a lot of pressure so could blow under the paper in the places you dont want it to go that or spray from further away
