Vintage Inspired Beach Playsuit Made From Curtains | Sewing with Thrifted Fabrics | Vintage Romper
I've been waiting to do this project for a year!!! I am so happy with it! It's such a relief that it turned out! I have always been in love with vintage playsuits, especially 1940s beach playsuits! They are so adorable! Simple, comfortable, they have a cute vintage vibe, BOWS, and a modesty skirt I can mix and match with other outfits too! Can a vintage playsuit get any better? OH YAH. SECRET SHORTS. What more could I want? It's the perfect look!
The curtains were given to me and I still have a few panels left. Yay! For giving it new life! I'm going to be making a few tops (I'm thinking something summery with puffed sleeves), and maybe something matching for Farley since he's still a little upset that felt out shined by all the animals in this video! He's still the star, just a stinky star at the moment.
I'm not really sure if this could be swimwear, or vintage swimwear - I didn't want to test it out! But I feel like it would hold up just fine on the beach, its perfect for a vintage beach playsuit when you aren't planning on getting your hair or makeup wet!
I am so excited to wear this, I only wish I would have made it sooner!
I hope you enjoyed my video! Please like and subscribe - I post sewing videos every week!
See ya there!

Agree with the other comments on here -- try basting in the zipper first. It holds it steady, you can see mistakes or funky bits before they're more permanently stitched and you don't have to wrangle pins out of the way. I'm certainly not excellent at zippers, but once I committed to basting first it has certainly helped and I haven't had to rip out a zipper in a while. Absolutely adore this romper. I personally can't spot any pattern matching issues either so you did real good there! Keep it up, mate -- your videos are so *chefs kiss* 😄

Aww thank you so much! Videos are definitely a learning process, but they are so much fun! Next time I do a zipper I will for sure be basting it! Extra step is worth using a seam ripper! Thank you!

I love putting in zippers and inserting sleeves.....I find them easy and satisfying.....on the other hand, I hate button holes.....
@whatssewingon3511
@whatssewingon3511 3 года назад
I don't mind sleeves either - but you are on your own with zippers! But it's nice to know someone likes them and can do them properly! Buttonholes are a breeze with the attachment, and lining them up on gingham is sooo easy!

Zippers? The trick is baste them in first. It seems like why - extra work? Honestly, you'll never have to unpick a zipper again. And find the type of zipper you prefer and just do those. Me? Lapped zippers every time - love them. It takes a few goes to understand how to put them in (follow instructions in a vintage tutorial) but the result is lovely. And don't be hard on yourself - a year is such a short time. I've been sewing for over 40 years and still make mistakes occasionally. The biggest asset in sewing is patience (if you wonder if you should baste something - the answer is always yes) and a good relationship with your seam ripper 🤣
@whatssewingon3511
@whatssewingon3511 3 года назад
I'm really going to have to try basting them first!! It seems like extra work - but unpicking them is even more time consuming, so it's worth a shot!! I'll have to look into lapped zippers, thanks for suggesting that!

I think you did a great job. It's challenging to mix patterns & not run into some kinda snag along the way. Yes, you will get better at zippers. There are quite a few methods you can try to find your preference. Don't give up!!

I really enjoy your videos and I wish you posted more frequently. I know, this is likely a silly request as garment sewing is very time consuming and there are other commitments.

Awww thank you so much! That means alot, I really appreciate that! I would love to post more, but you're right. With a full-time job, sewing a garment AND filming/editing - it would be so hard!! Maybe one day 😊

The best thing I know to get crazy ick and smell out of hair... Err fur, is the Head and Shoulders Clinical strength dandruff shampoo. It's the orange shampoo (in a blue bottle here is the US, but I don't know if they change the packaging abroad.).

I hand baste my zippers, that way I'm not dealing with pins and I can see what needs adjusting before I use the machine. This was a game changer for me! Also with not separating zippers, I reattach the pull from the bottom.

A baking soda paste since it's an oil that is sprayed and water makes it stick.

Yes! We did shampoo, then tomato, then baking soda, then another shampoo that night! We got some skunk shampoo and gave him a few baths and a few swims the next day.. it’s better now, too bad he had to put up with it for so long!

I was trying to wrap my head around how you did the zip. If I was attacking this project (which is so on my summer sewing list now btw!) & the zip was too long. I would have kept the top stop and sewn back and forth along the bottom to create a new stop. Just to stop having to trim the top. Alsooo apparently if you cut a tiny bit of plastic straw, then split it lengthways along one side, slip it over the zip, pinch it together with hair straighteners, and you can re thread the pull without destroying the teeth. (I hope to god that made sense!)

Omggg so happy to see this! My grandmother is a seamstress and told me to really PULL HARD on the zipper &fabric while sewing, it stops it from puckering and makes it easier to sew. Also to sew with the zipper on top so it stays smooth

I am *not* a whiz at zippers. They are *so finicky!* I am currently in the process of trying to figure out how to get out of putting the indicated side zipper into a fitted blouse. It's necessary, but is it really, tho??? Put the letters in the right order, come on now. 😓
