You had me at Type 20, Tim. 😀 So pleased Airain Nouveau did this properly - flyback / manual - column wheel / plex / no-date. If I hadn’t pulled the trigger on a Junghans J88 update, the Meister Pilot 027/3590.00, this summer, I’d be on this Type 20 like a Frenchman on a tray of Napoleons. 🇫🇷 🍰

The Netherlands is generating interesting horology. I have a Ketelaars watch on order and was profoundly impressed by this Airain beyond its looks because of the La Joux-Perret chronograph movement. This movement makes all the difference in the world and for me totally justifies the price. I may not buy the Airain because I already have the Hanhart 417ES in bronze, another military chronograph reissue from the original manufacturer, but I am certainly tempted. When small brands use La Joux-Perret movements they get my attention as these are high quality movements and evidence that the brand is interested in making a serious horological offering.

Very nicely made. Looks far better on video than it did on still pictures. It's an iconic design, and they seem to have taken their job very seriously, considering the movement developpment in particular. They took risks here, and didn't went for a half assed solution, I like that.

A very nice "recreation" of a classic, the looks are great, it's got a quality movement and it does all the "right things". I've been following AiRain's website, and this piqued my interest. It's not cheap, but I think you are paying for a quality product. - pity about the sharp edges. I won't however be buying one, as I took the plunge a few weeks ago and bought a Hanhart 417ES, a watch in a very similar vein, beautifully finished and even with paying 20% vat it is a bit cheaper than the Airain. (I'd still like one though!) Thank you for another good video.

@anthonysmith2982
@anthonysmith2982 2 года назад
@@johnchan9425 Yeah, the vast majority of the Type XXI's have that rotating count down bezel and they all have the fly-back function. I reckon that the new owner of the Airain marque has done a great job with this design. I hope the production process is a success. I'd rather see these brands in the hands of capable enthusiasts than see them fade into nothing. The history of these watches is absolutely fascinating. You're commenting in this thread so the following is probably nothing you don't already know, but there is this great indirect lineage from Germany's post-war Hanharts, through some rare Breguet Type XX's right into the Longines Avigation Big-Eye. The 1st Type XX specs were heavily inspired by Hanhart, so they used the twin register Valjoux 222 mov'ts and that knurled rotating bezel. Breguet made 2,000 sterile dial pieces in the 'normal' Type XX layout and a further 1,000 branded pieces with a Big-Eye register at the 3 o'clock that only measured 15mins. I'm sure that you know of these pieces, with their distinctive squat lumed leaf style chronograph hand & the lumed 3min increment Big-Eye register. 500 of those went to French Naval Aviation and 500 to the CEV, or Flight Training Centre. The most interesting and rarest are the 50 tri-register versions (using a Valjoux 225) that added a 12hr register at the 6 o'clock and the 12hr count down bezel. There's something about all that intertwined inspiration - from the Hanhart through to this Longines Avigation Big-Eye via an obscure Breguet Type XX that really excites the nerd in me.

This was a very interesting video. I like the watch, but I can't quite get my thoughts in order, so I'll just blurt them out randomly. The buckle is a bit sharp-edged, as is the case, but I don't think I've ever damaged furniture or clothing with any watch. I'm not one of those guys who thinks all watches are too expensive, but at 2500 this one is a little above my comfort zone. It appears to be very high quality, and it would be of some value to get a low serial number from a manufacturer that may one day be a major player in the industry. And, I kinda like the idea that they decided to leap-frog entirely over the MicroBrand genre. But still, 2500 has got me thinking . . . I like the dial, I like the layout, I like the brushed case, I like the leather strap, I like the smooth fly-back function (and the navigator activity mentioned by Tim; those guys are constantly running calculations in their heads and they need a watch that can keep up), and I like the no-click bi-directional bezel. I can't tell how many times I went one click too far on a 120-click uni-directional bezel and cursed under my breath (sometimes above my breath) while clicking 119 times to get back in business. 2500 . . . dang!

They made all the right decisions but they just don't have the heritage for this price. Watches are luxury goods and past a certain point, we are paying for something more than design, build and components. But if it sells out its run, good luck to them! My only other observation is Breguet should be releasing a watch like this as a regular offering.
@anthonysmith2982
@anthonysmith2982 2 года назад
Good point. Dodane and Auricoste, 2 of the 6 original manufacturers are still producing Type XX's (as I'm sure you know) and even though Breguet claim to be still making them (I think they call them Type 22's & Type 23's now?) they are big and shiny and ugly!, but again I'm sure you know all that. You're point about the resurrected brand is well made, however I have to say that I think they've done a stellar job! Sourcing the movement through La Joux-Perret was a nice touch as was leaving the dimensions (pretty much) alone. I'm sure that there'll be plenty of interested collectors waiting to see how the first batch turns out, I believe is sold out?, before pouncing, but I think they'll pounce. If I had the means I'd definitely be interested. One of my favourite watch designs of all time.
@brianmsahin
@brianmsahin 2 года назад
It's a very nice watch. Nice looking movement and 60 hours power reserve is a great extra to have on a non automatic. As regards the plexiglass just keep a tube of Polywatch handy and easily remove scuffs or light scratches! When I'm not diving I use my tool watches when mountain climbing so I'd probably scratch it beyond what Polywatch can fix so it wouldn't be for me. But it's definitely a winner, I reckon they'll sell out very quickly even though it's overpriced quite a bit.

I like it. Design and aethetically, of course, it is classic and very good. Pretty great dimensions and relatively compact. Although 15mm thick, I imagine it still wears relatively thin as the box acrylic crystal just take up at least 2mm. Coincidentally, because a friend recently received his Hemel Air League mechanical chronograph which is similarly styled watch but modelled more after a design by Blancpain, I was just thinking of this type of watch the other day. One I saw a review on years ago.. but, I couldn't remember the name of brand until I saw this video. Dodaine! Another French brand if I'm not mistaken with some heritage indeed. Like that type 20 style from Dodaine, it had an odd choice for the rotating bezel. I can understand why minutes may be in reverse for a countdown bezel. But, a 12 hour bezel in reverse confuses me. I assume most use 12 hour bezel for a 2nd time zone. For this the 1-12 should be in normal clockwise layout around the bezel. I suppose you could use as countdown for hours, but I can't imagine many would use or need to countdown hours. That's the only design aspect I am not in love with as the functionality as it doesn't make sense to me. As for the price, I think fair for a mechanical chronograph with a TRUE flyback feature. I am most impressed it has a true flyback chronograph movement. I can't think of any flyback chronograph that cost well under $3k. Thanks for sharing this one!
@Vingt-trois1
@Vingt-trois1 2 года назад
Hello, little information about the bezel. If I'm not mistaken the purpose of a 12 hour countdown is for the remaining fuel for the plane. If you take the plane at 1pm and you have 3 hours of fuel, you simply put the 3 on the plane's takeoff time. Don't take my words from granted, I could be wrong.

For 2 500 Euros, my humble opinion: save an extra 2000, more or less, and get yourself a true quality watch, like the IWC Pilot reissue (used, of course) , with in- house movement (a modified ETA) . I know the movements and/ or functions might be different, but if you're into this look and would like a brand with tradition and pioneering, then yeah.

Unfortunately it's too expensive for me!!, however I'm not sure that it's too expensive for what it is. La Joux-Perret are a pretty serious manufacturer so I reckon a fly-back chronograph mov't from them would cost an arm and a leg and given the sort of money the original Type XX's command, I reckon enthusiasts who regularly spend ~€3K on timepieces will find this very attractive. Yeah, the brands heritage is 'imagined' (for want of a better phrase) but otherwise they've done a bang up job effectively re-issueing the piece from the original specs. Hemel do a very similar piece for ~$500USD (either Seiko mecha-quartz or Seagull ST19 powered) if you are after something similar. It's a clone of the Blancpain Air Command - but also another type XX / type XXI - and 6 companies produced them for the French Air Force alone and Blancpain wasn't one of them, so theirs is effectively an homage as well... 😊
