Love it when they show the actual recording footage of the original Star Wars, Empire, Return of the Jedi with the LSO. Magical times. Wish there were more.

It's incredible to see a normally humble, quiet man go into full overdrive.

Thank you so much for posting this. Brought back a lot of childhood memories and remember seeing this on 20/20 when it first ran back in the early 80s!

Great to see this again. I saw this when it was first broadcast in the States and have referred to it many times to students writing dissertations on film music. Also the BBC version.

I truly believe John Williams' music is on a plateau of its own. I just listened to a CD of his Jaws that came in the mail which includes notes by Stephen Spielberg saying in effect only Max Steiner poses any serious completion as the best. I would tend to agree. If Steiner is know at all by non-specialists today they probably think Gone With the Wind. But Steiner also composed White Heat, Casablanca, Treasure of the Sierra Madres...and the list goes on. Without taking anything away from the peak John Williams has reached, even Isaac Newton said he achieved so much because he stood on the shoulders of giants. Some people in the field still can think of Korngold, Miklos Rosza, Dimiti Tiomkin, Bernard Hermann..but great movie scores were also composed by Maurice Jarre, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Franz Waxman, and the list goes on. Because of.my love of Hollywood's Golden Age I really shudder at being called an old fogey, but film music is not the domain of just Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner- as great as contemporary film composers can be.

Around the 8-minute mark we see a spotting session for The Empire Strikes Back. Editor Paul Hirsch is showing George Lucas, John Williams, and producer Gary Kurtz the film. From this brief clip it appears that director Irvin Kershner isn’t even present.

Paul Hirsch. I think the directors on ESB and ROTJ were seen as "stage directors." I think Lucas and Kurtz were the overseers of the entire movie who handled the effects and post-production.

@@jedijones, it seems Autocorrect got the best of me. Thanks for the Hirsch correction.

What Andre Previn said about Hollywood is so true. Hollywood is run by corporate idiots who have no idea what they're doing. Hollywood hasn't changed very much then and they are DEFINITELY not changing now. John Williams is one of the few people I have respect for and his scores are timeless!

Is the narrator merely regurgitating the same script that the British accented one does from the original BBC doco from which most of the footage here is from?

Time has passed him by and Hollywood has turned to newer more contemporary composers such as hanz zimmer
@lukeskywalker6809
@lukeskywalker6809 5 лет назад
That's absolutely not true. He is way above the level of contemporary Hollywood. Studios don't want his quality of film music anymore, instead want electronic two note synth music like what Zimmer does. To be honest John Williams is too good for Hollywood.

What an obnoxious, dismissive comment about the greatest film composer in history. I'm a pianist and composer myself and stand in awe of John Williams. That you would name such a hack as his successor proves how unworthy are your opinions on this great artist and on music in general.
