A change to my normal repair videos as I had never actually worked on fixing Big Jim figures before, so I just decided to see what I could do in the way of repairs to them. This video shows the end results and talks you through the processes I used in fixing them up for display.

Wow. I loved my Big Jim figures so much. That was in the 70s. And as I remember correctly one figure broke his hip joint. And I was crying so heavily. It was traumatizing in some way. The second Big Jim figure was Big Josh, full bearded. The black Big Jim figure was Big Jack as I remember correctly. So lovely to see that these three figures are in your good hands. Thank you Dave. Keep, up the good work. Stay safe. Stay healthy. The human malware is still around.

Thanks. The hips do appear to be a problem. I will have to try and get one broken in that way so I can cover that fix as well.

I had Mego Our Gang (Lil Rascals) figures and Big Jim figures when I was a kid. They all suffered from broken ankles and wrists. Poor Buckwheat had a broken ankle when I got him in the package. I made him a wooden crutch after numerous unsuccessful glue surgeries.

Black figure was called Big Jack in the states Amazed so many guys who grew up through the 70s don't know or remember the line, as Big Jim stuff were "big" with all my peers early through mid 70s. Still have original Big Jack and some accessories, bought back nice camper and rescue rig on ebay last decade or so

Really nice save! I have been a Big Jim collector since the 70's. They have always been hard to repair. You have to be careful with the hands and feet splitting. The worst is repairing the leg ball joints. Not easy to do. I have also been making vinyl reproduction decals for Big Jim vehicles for about 20 years.

Thanks Dave. These figures were very foreign to me as a child growing up in England and Australia. I think they must have been specific to the US market? He looks like the love child of Action Man and Steve Austin. Nice fix, love the new bionic ankle. "Dave can rebuild him, he has the technology..."

I don't recall them either, but they were available in the UK. It was Action Man for me around that time I guess.

@@toypolloi In England we had him as MARK STRONG THE MAN FROM M.A.TT.E.L. A sort of secret agent using his sporting skills as cover like the old show I-SPY. A fantastic comic strip ran for 6 months in LOOK-IN in 1972 too. I have a number of these myself. Wonderful figure from 1972.

Stellar fix. I am always impressed with what you can do with Legos. Looking at Big Jim I can't help but notice how much he resembles Free Moving Ken also by Mattel which makes sense as Mattel has and still recycles everything. =-)>

@@toypolloi Thanks for replying. Yeah I remember Sport and Shave Ken or working out Ken as I call him as he came out around the same time as Great Shape Barbie. I was thinking of the head mold of Big Jim who could pass for Mod Ken's brother. There is a definite Mattel family resemblance there. I could go on all day. I do want to say that I enjoy your video and you are very innovative with your repairs.

Great video. I just finished restoring my Big Jim figures from childhood (47 years old!) and had similar issues. Luckily I found one full new leg for one of them, but the other two needed hand replacements. They are not easy to repair, so I ended up gluing them at the wrist and have the same result. They can rotate but not pivot, I am ok with that for display purposes.

I really like your random fixes. I bought the plastic weld on your suggestion a few months ago and it has been majorly helpful so far. Thank you!😄 You always have the best solutions and tips and tricks! I‘d love to see some more of Big Jim on your channel. I just recently got interested in him because his accessories go quite well with G.I. Joe and Big Jim is much commoner to find here on the mainland.
@toypolloi
@toypolloi 3 года назад
Thanks. Plastic weld is a must have for sure. Doesn't always work, but on old plastic like this it's great. I hope to do more Big Jim in future as there are some other common issues I would like to work on like the hips. So I will be keeping an eye out for more broken ones.

Love the foot fix. I believe the hands have two nubs that hold the wrist piece in place. A little work should free the broken circle from the hand and you can then replace it the way you did with the Lego joint. Have you tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the arms? It made my Big Jim's arms look factory fresh.
@toypolloi
@toypolloi 3 года назад
The hand could be fixed the same way if I could find a part to make the new joint from. So far I have nothing that small. I'll keep hunting.

I've sctuslly never seen any Meccano at a Toy Fair. I've not seen any at the NEC tair when they were on but never really occurred to me that it would be of use to me. I do look for Lego though when I get a chance. I hope the they start again in the new year. Clever fix though and inspirational on the spur thought!

Fun fact: These same arms and hands were used by Mattel for two dolls in the Barbie line, 1980 Sport & Shave Ken and 1982 All Star Ken, so this hand repair method would be applicable to those dolls as well. Yes, the arms are a bit out of scale for Ken, but Mattel used them anyway.

Maybe just sand it flat. I would guess it's the plastic reacting with other plastic. Very common with the materials used in the era of toys.

I have some super Joe commander and Luminos figures who's rubber knees elbows hips shoulders and hands have dried to crumbles. They are a shambles of body parts. Joe is held together by his clothes. And luminous is transparent and doesn't wear clothes. And both rubber hands have virtually turned to chalk. Its a pittifull sight. And I can't find a good way to save them. I've considered monofilament fishing line under tention and makeing 4 hands from scratch. Plus luminoses hands should be clear. I've seen these figures in the blister card on eBay that are all basket cases of hardened rubber hands & joints. Falling apart in the package. Fuseing all the joints with epoxy is a last resort.. Any ideas would be great. I'm sure this is a common problem with the Super Joe Commander toys.
