Happy New Year to all you beautiful subscribers and everyone else who watches! especially YOU! yes YOU! You watch every upload but wont subscribe or comment! Don't worry I'm only joking, no I'm not.
This week I'm back in the shed and winter has really kicked in up here so I've climbed into my super warm (Building Alaska) Dickies coat until a Groundhog says It's ok to come out.
Question....
Have you ever wondered why people say " I need to Megger the cables "
or, " blah blah it's giving me 200 Megger ohms " ????
( I'll be the first to confess I've said both myself )
Answer....
The former statement is kind of correct, as this little Megger was as popular as an iphone back in the day. It's the classic mistake of calling a vacuum cleaner a Hoover! We do the same thing when it comes to hardcore construction, you'll quite often hear " Just get a JCB on it mate " when actually they're referring to heavy duty plant equipment.
The latter is just a a mix up of what a Megger actually is and the word meg-ohm, which is a measurement of resistance. Because the Megger can measure meg-ohms of resistance, people could be forgiven for getting the two words and meanings mixed up. Even though we all (electricians) know exactly what they mean.
The little MEGGER INSULATION TESTER series 3 is a great bit of vintage test equipment from days gone by. This one dates back to at least the 1960s, although some like this can be much older. If you're one of the very few to read any of the words I put down here then you'll also see I've dropped some links into the description. These are to other RU-vid channels and websites that have gone further into this Megger and how it all works.

We used one of these when I was an apprentice in the 70's, we used to try and get other apprentices to hang onto the test leads while we spun the handle !

Was the only type of Megger we had when I was a apprentice in the mid 1970 although we used the 500V one

I remember an old spark telling me about them in 2001. At college we had Robin analogue testers back in the 00s.

I have one of the 500V ones. Got it for a steal at the place I work. Paid $0.35/lb for it. Works great. Sounds like it could use new oil and grease in it, but still works perfect. It even came with the carry case that's OD green and has the original leather shoulder strap. There was a pile of test cards and the original manual in the carry case, but they were water damaged pretty good. Can still read the test cards, but the manual has all the pages all wrinkled up and stuck together like old water damaged books do. The canvas carry case is in shambles. The poor thing is falling apart. But, I wanted to keep all the original stuff with it, so I'll try to preserve it the best I can.

Wow,that brought memories bsck james,i absolutely love old and new testers.i love collevting these meters,well done sir😊

Me too, the older testers often have a historical sense about them, like they were used in the war or on famous old buildings. I'd love to find an untouched electrical installation still in use but 50+ years old, no RCD, no MCBs, no cpcs in various areas. Fascinating but obviously quite dangerous 😳.

What a great video! I like messing with old testers - I recently used a vintage post office box to measure some alarm cable and got 0.12 ohms, and my MFT gave it 0.13 ohms, leaving me chuffed with both of them!

Oh cheers James. Watching this makes me so jealous of such a wonderful toy, I've had to log in to an iffy auction site to obtain one of my very own to place on my shelf of interesting cack! And I can't even make a video about it as you've covered everything here!

That is a very nice example of a series 3 megger. Serial number looks to put the manufacture date between 1942 to 1946, sometimes when you open them up, the actual date is written in pencil on the internal frame. The case did indeed have a strap with it, two point for carrying on the top two, and then the third pin provided another attachment so the megger could be hung around the neck and would sit flat enabling its use inside the case. I have three of these in my collection so far and always enjoy seeing others collecting them and looking after them.

I bought one of those about 30 years ago in a brass carrier along with an AVO 7 multimeter in a leather case from an army surplus store. I think the upward pointing arrow signifies war dept. As I remember the calibration date on mine was 1972. No longer have them I sold them, wish I hadn't now 😩

Absolutely love old test gear like this, I've just been given a pre war dew point meter by a customer, dying to get it running but it has a radioactive material warning on it, so am a bit unsure.
@JBE
@JBE 2 года назад
You'll have to pick up a geiger counter from Amazon and see how radioactive it is. ☢😷🤔👍

Fantastic video James, believe it or not the crank operated mega is still compliant , and I think the calibration date is the date it left the factory? , basically there is nothing to calibrate on it you can zero the needle your self with the screw below the needle. I did C&Gs 236 parts one and two 87 to92 and we had those testers as well as the mega Battery BM6 fantastic testers. I now have a ROBIN KTS 1620 and a kewtech kt 63. Fantastic video mate 👍👍❤️

Hey cheers Sean, I too remember using 3 different Robin testers when I was learning. If this thing is still calibrated I'm definitely going to try it out on my next install.

The arrow on the leather case indicates it was a ministry of defence / army tool, the number being the stores reference.

Oh really? Well that's twice the awesomeness then! I wonder if it's possible to trace it's origins?
@oyleyhands1332

I would agree as I had an AVO with the same arrow and I bought that from a guy who sold ex WD issue equipment,it was mint and probably never issued. In fact, I still have it somewhere and it was working last time I saw it. I recall asking my boss as an apprentice if I could have the company purchase an AVO Minor multimeter with a nice leather case and then have a few pence deducted from my meagre wages each week, he agreed as no apprentice had ever asked to own his own multimeter those days ! very early 70's I would say.

A steady cranking speed is sufficient, don't ring it's neck off.

Sorry John, I get a little carried away when it comes to old tech and cranks. I shall remember to take it slow and steady from now on 👍

Cheers James, really enjoyable vid of Old school kit. How many old boys are telling us we don't know how good we've got it with our all singing, all dancing MFTs when they had to carry around three or four bts of kit? I reckon the PD on the screws is the Calibration house seal in bitumen to maintain its integrity to prevent tampering or at least, identify if there was some, between calibrations. The hand written text on the case may have been an asset number I reckon from a company.
@JBE
@JBE 2 года назад
Thanks Olly, hmm yes I did wonder what the PD meant on those screw covers. It does look like bitumen too. Some of the MFTs these days come with an accompanying 1 day course to know how to use them.
@olly7673
@olly7673 2 года назад
@@JBE I could have done with a one day course when I bought my megger 1741, as the manual was pants.

Hi, great video thanks. I have one of these handed down to me from a very old friend and it came in a twin box with an Ohmmeter. The Ohmmeter does have a battery compartment but I do not know what battery to put in it or have I seen any videos on these so if anyone knows please let m know.
