Vintage MF35 is a Workhorse! Hauling Huge Loads of Firewood!

The Emerald Ash Borer EAB killed our woods! Making tons of great firewood! We team up to save it, with the Makita, DR Versa Pro XL Trailer, Massey Ferguson tractor and husband and wife teamwork we are getting tons of premium firewood out before it’s too late. The woods is less of a swamp this round and we are back at it trying to load our N&N dump trailer with a few cords of rounds! This old Massey Ferguson tractor is a work horse and has no problem pulling these heavy loads of ash over uneven terrain making our job faster and easier!

Nice job guys. Pretty much all I've cut for the last 7 years is ash. I cut in an 80 acre bush and it's all I can do to keep up with it. I've removed 1000's of trees. I even bought a portable sawmill thinking that I would mill a bunch. I just have no time to mill much so been keeping on with cutting firewood. Now I have neighbours wanting me to clean up their properties but due to falling trees most sites are just too dangerous. I cut my trees as low as I possibly can so that the stumps are flat with the ground so I don't have to worry about hitting them when driving around. Some of the punkier wood will still be salable to boiler guys and you likely won't even need to split it. The fallen trees make such a mess it's nice to have it gone.
@rachelpostma4505
@rachelpostma4505 Год назад
Thanks Dale! Heath always talks about wanting a sawmill too, but like you, the time is a limiting factor.
@hardworkingmanoutdoors
@hardworkingmanoutdoors Год назад
Thanks Dale, and yes I’d love a sawmill. But like Phil from @AllenFamilyFirewood said in todays video there’s just not enough time in the day. I plan on trying to sell totes or trailer loads of boiler wood this fall.
@DaleFarrish
@DaleFarrish Год назад
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I work full time also and work long hours so have to do what I can when I can. I don't buy wood, I cut down trees for all of my firewood and that also takes time and equipment. I also build most of my firewood gear and that takes time too. I build equipment that saves me the most time and effort. I try to plan my firewood yard to make efficient use of my time. From what I see of your operation the biggest time/ effort saver for you both right now is a stand alone conveyor. ( sorry Rachel) I have friends who have been doing firewood for years and as soon as they come to my place and see my setups they just have to go get a conveyor. They save an amazing amount of labor. I have a dozen different conveyors and use 4 or 5 pretty regularly. We hand load all of our splits onto a conveyor into our dump trailers or flat bed truck to ensure nice clean wood. I usually use a Blackscreek firewood conveyor for this. I buy lots of stuff used at auctions but these are pretty reasonable new. Heath, keep looking at the auctions site and find a used grain conveyor as soon as you can.
@DaleFarrish
@DaleFarrish Год назад
@@rachelpostma4505 don't let him buy one. Well at least not yet anyway. Hydraulic ones are very expensive and Non hydraulic ones are just too labor intensive unless you are already set up to do it. JB, this is at our property 45 minutes from our home. Right now our splitters are at the house so we haul the rounds there to split and sell. I am working on setting up a processing center at the property so we can just produce the splits there but have a ways to go on that plan.

Here in southern Ill most ash under 20" are dead. I have a buddy that has 35 acres of forestry planted ash. All of them 10-14" and all dead.
@hardworkingmanoutdoors
@hardworkingmanoutdoors Год назад
Yeah that’s what happened here. It gets all of them but some real young growth eventually. Start pulling the firewood as fast as you can because if you have a lot of ash trees they make a tangled mess when they start coming down!
@ethanpemberton9011
@ethanpemberton9011 Год назад
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors oh yes they do become a tangled mess. We had pretty fierce winds this spring the hundreds of the tops came out. It's ashame to lose all the trees but it makes good firewood

That it does and when the sunlight hits the Forrest floor the new growth flourishes which is great for wildlife. All part of the cycle, making the best out of it!

Paul, we don’t seem to have any poison ivy out there. Also if you wash the oils off soon enough with a clothe and dawn dish soap it helps defend against the rash.

@hardworkingmanoutdoors Год назад
JB, we both do the camera work mixed with some tripod action, and sometimes we have our kids run the camera. A little bit of everything. Definitely not the most efficient way to produce wood but we like a moving camera more so than too much tripod action to keep it entertaining.

Yes, I skid logs out in the winter but right now the ground is too soft. Also our trails are too narrow to get the truck and dump trailer to most locations. So yes it is extra work but part of why we enjoy firewood is the workout we get while making firewood so there are added benefits too.

Duane, my trails are no where near big enough to get the dually and or the full size dump trailer back on. We would destroy them. I try to skid a bunch out in the winter but a lot depends on the weather and once hunting season gets close that’s all we use the property for.
