VINTAGE MOTOCROSS! 1979 Suzuki RM250 at Tampa MX

Onboard video of my first race riding the 1979 RM250 at Tampa MX during Round 2 of the Sunshine State Vintage Motocross 2020-21 season. I signed up for the 1976-80 open cc C class which was mixed with the 1975-older B/C classes. It was a great race and event and I was impressed with the jumping capabilities of the old RM! I started pushing my comfort zone in this moto and jumping a bit more as I got more comfortable on the bike. I went 1-1 in my motos and came home with a 1st overall!

I had that bike brand new in 1979 I loved it. I was trying to find they are rare and hard to find. Great Video.

Very cool! I really like this bike and there are a few late 70's RM's at these races. In my Dade City vintage race video I battle a 79' RM125, check it out!

Thanks!! Now that I’m used to the bike and trust it, I’ll go a little faster in the next round. I did find the vintage drum brakes weren’t too good at slowing the heavy bike though, so I was a bit timid going into the corners. Maybe I’ll find some grippier shoes, but parts for the old bikes are not as easy as they are for the monkey! Lol

How often does Tampa do Vintage Races?

The event was one of the Sunshine State Vintage MX clubs series races, so this round was at Tampa. I don’t think Tampa does regular vintage stuff otherwise. The series will make another stop there January 24

What was the reason why shocks back then were so weak and simple? Shocks in the 90s were a lot better, what improved technology wise? Those shocks look like straws.

They went to big aluminum swingarms and monoshocks soon after this.......

because the tracks weren't as extreme and didn't require huge amounts of travel. As the tracks got more challenging and the jumps more extreme, the suspension technology followed
