Restoring a vintage mountain bike, a '91 Diamondback Ascent showing you how I did it and what problems I encounter on the way.
Bought the bike for $5, but only save the frame for this build, splurged $$$ for some new/old parts.
Painted the bike using Spray.Bike spray paint with review on the paint & my experience.

Great video! I really appreciate that you sped up some parts & time-stamped it. For stuck seatposts and other parts, I highly recommend a product called PB Blaster. I've used it with great success. (Completely unaffiliated, just a happy customer.) Then, if you have access to a bench vise, put the seatpost in it (block with wood if you want to try to save it), then use the frame (**with wheels or spare hubs in it to prevent bending anything) as a lever to twist it.

Gary, on the seatpost. fill the seatpost tube with pb blaster and let it soak for a few days. leave it upside down to allow it to soak.hit it a couple time a day with a dead blow hammer. it will come out with a pipe wrench after a few days.

@@garysprojects i had a specialized rockhopper i the 90s so i definitally recognized the araya rims that were used on similiar bikes of that price point i think i spe t 500 to 600 then ..and that was alot back then ..so finding them today i can appreciate a good basic bike..i would never buy any wallmart bike lol

Nice. Did 2 builds with low-rise moto style bars as well. Like the look. A 1X7 might look nice as it makes the frame appear a bit larger than with the bulky 3 ring front derailleur. Done right & geared correctly, a 1x7 handles everything put to it. Thx f/posting -

Great save! I am digging your handlebar choice. Tires are such an expensive part of a rebuild, I'm surprised you went to town with new tread, but looks good. I was personally hoping for a shifter rebuild. When you do, take your time and walk through the disassembly and rebuild with commentary. Great build!

Awesome! I’ve had a ‘92 DB Apex from new and it’s been my everything bike. I keep it as original as possible but I think that bar & stem combo would work for me as I find the road bike style position a bit too aggressive. I could easily swap the T-bone & bar back if I wanted to. Thanks for this 😎

It turned out super cool man👊😄👍 I love watching your grassroots bike builds. I am also a 26er aficionado. I have a fully modern upgraded, (full rigid) 1990 Trek 970 with a venturemax dropbar for mountain climbing/descending (50t cassette/20t chainring) and a (full rigid) 1993 Schwinn Paramount pdg70 sporting FatFranks and 48cm Nitto Noodle dropbar for carving the pavement trails. They both kick butt. I love the maneuverability of the 26ers. Keep up the great work, always have lots of fun✌

@@garysprojects I love the drops on these geometry. It is a must to get the bars up&close to you(the trick is the hand position in the drop need to be close to where a flat bar position would be. I use a 70mm 35 degree stem for both bikes with the quill adapter. It gives me so much more control, I can carve the road or offroad like I'm surfing(I love the FatFranks for the road @20/25 lbs pressure). Sorry for rambling on but last thing is the handlebar bag(Chrome DKLEIN) fills the gap in the front and makes it look really badass. Take care mate😚💨👌 46cm & up I would recommend.

Very Nice result, those early 90's Deore XT parts are super expensive though, I know as doing up my own 90's bike, a golden age of MTBing that I took part in, no suspension was standard

Just picked a 1991 db apex for $20 from my favorite thrift store. The rear hub, cassette and freehub needed some cleaning and rebuild. Um currently cleaning up the chainrings and may or may rebuild the front hubif I have the right bearings.

Hell yeah thanks homie! FYI the keirin flake sprays like normal spray paint so around 30cm away and it also has a clear coat in the can, so can act like a clear coat too. Hope that helps cheers!

Eucalyptus oil (can get it from the grocery store for a few dollars) is great for getting off glue residue, e.g. from old stickets, etc.

Hi from Portugal... Some tips *Use a hand dryer to get rid of stickers, put it in the hottest position and normally it came of as a whole. *Seat post release, put a screw at the base of the frame but in a position that does the opposite of tightening so it can open a little gap, and the WB40 and wait a while. And try to take it of with a good leverage and rotation one way. (done that with my giant and I was a walk in the park and it was stuck as hell) *Replacing the shafts and seat post screw alone for newer ones, no need nothing fancy just in aluminium save you 260 grams alone!! *car scratch polisher and brass brush does wonders in rust and with no much effort. *If you want to save old grips without cutting them, just go some place that has a compressed air pistol, put the tip on the inside gap of the grip and normally the almost come out alone Hope you don't mind the tips. Very nice work and budget friendly :) Stay safe Nuno Guerreiro

I found an 80s one I guessing. Vin number online didn't come up with anything. But it did come with carbon fiber seat post and bars. The bike was loved back in the day. Looks great all cleaned up

Great video. i have a product here called Liquid sharpener. It claims to sharpen hand saws that are rusty with no tools or filing. it removes rust and heavy black grime so well. great for brake dust on chrome Automotive wheels too.

Diamondback are the lowest priced decent brand with a solid quality groupo on ebay and gumtree. An Ascent was $995 bike in the day. anything above a Topanga has some decent equipment and the frames pre 2000 are bombproof but bit heavy until you get to Ascent, Apex and Axis.

Totally agree! Thanks for the info. This bike and also the other diamond back I have run super well and frame is light (enough) and super solid. Very happy with them! 🌚🌚🌝🌝

It came out nice bro.... the different bars make it stand out... would have been cool to see you pay homage to the 90s with some neon colors on it.... like grips and pedals maybe.... either way, you turned trash into treasure

Stencil typeface DB Ascent = 1990 or 1991. '91 Good bike. '93 is my personal favorite model year. Get a 24" pipe wrench for stuck seatposts. It will free most stuck posts

thanks for the tip! Ya this is a 91 with 93 decals because I had left over decals from my 93 db and I like the look of the typeface better anyways!! Cheers homie 👍
