Our favorite retro appetizer is called, Poor Man’s shrimp cocktail. Drain a can of shrimp from the canned tuna aisle. Save water for cat or dog. Rinse and pick out 3 prettiest shrimp to lay aside. Mix them with a mixer to a paste and add one block of cream cheese. Mix well. form into ball and slightly flatten top. In another bowl mix ketchup, a squeeze of lemon juice and horseradish to taste. Spoon over shrimp ball covering completely. Decorate with a small sprig of parsley and three reserved shrimp. Serve with Triscuits. We use Aldi woven wheat crackers. This is a family favorite served for decades. At Halloween it is shaped into a pumpkin shape and a string makes lines like a pumpkin and the sauce is served on the side. We have also had it served as a turkey and other shapes!

I love cream puffs! Just want to give you some tips on how to make them. You do not need to cool down the dough, it should be warm or even hot when you mix eggs. If you think the dough is too hot, separate yolks from egg whites and first add yolks and then whites. In the end, the dough should be more creamy. You might want to add a bit more water the next time. You should be able to use a pastry bag to put them on the sheet pan (you do not need to use it, this is more like a test for the dough). And usually puffs are smaller. That's why you had only 8 of them 😊 Puffs need humidity in the oven to rise properly. I drizzle some water over the sheet pan before putting it into the oven. And the most difficult part for me - you are not supposed to open the oven to check on them until they are ready 😅 thank you for another great video!

I also love cream puffs and, yes, they are smaller. Something I do to fill them is to cut the top off about a third of the way down, fill, then use the cut part as a "hat" over the filling (my favorite is Deviled Ham).

Emmie, When they said teaspoon for the cream puffs they meant a measuring teaspoon which is much smaller than a flatware teaspoon. You would get a lot more especially since the pastry will puff up. Love your videos.

I remember when rotel dip was a treat, something special, that you only saw at church socials or holiday parties. One of my favorite appetizers/finger foods is called party pizzas. Here is the recipe: 2 cups grated cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup of chopped black olives, 1/4 cup chopped pecans, 2 tablespoons of chopped green onion, 8 slices of cooked bacon crumbled amd 1 cup of mayonnaise. mix all together and spread on party rye bread slices, bake at 300 degrees for 15 to 20 min. These are SO good! I hope you will try them, unless you already know this recipe. Thanks for sharing these recipes!

I will have to re-watch the video when I am done baking cookies, which leads me into the answer to the question of the day, lol! Every year I bake and pass out Butter cookies and pecan crescents to family and friends. These recipes were given to my Grandma by her mother-in-law, and I have no idea how far back they go. The instructions are simple, the recipes are no more than 5 ingredients, and can only be mixed by hand. I am honored to continue the tradition. Wishing everyone a happy holidays and Merry Christmas!

These appetizers look great. Back in my dad’s day as a child, he remembers Christmas Eve as folks coming by and little snacks and cookies out. That was the day trees were decorated. People would come by, have a snack and place an ornament. And then visit other family and friends. Pre-dates the idea of the fish dinner on the Eve. I think an appetizer table is great! I don’t think this is retro, but I do remember eating it as a teen. A 16-oz cup of sour cream, an envelope of Lipton onion soup mix, and a box of frozen chopped spinach (thawed and drained well). Mix it all together and serve with bread, crackers, pretzels, tortilla chips, raw veggies… anything, really!

You can dice your avocados….toss in a little lime juice….and quick freeze them on parchment paper then store in baggies. ♥️ Sprinkles are stupid-expensive these days…but critical for this time of year. This week we made candy coated pretzel rods and let the grandkids decorate them. It’s a yearly tradition. Love my old recipes, especially ones from my 8th grade home ec class way back in 1970. Lemon bars, lemon squares….so yum!!

I love all these recipes! I make several easy appetizers. My family lobes Baked Brie in bread. Use a can of refrigerated cresent rolls. Put 4 together to make a square, pinch the sides. Put a round of brie straight from the refrigerator in the middle of the dough. Cover with a similar square of dough from the remaining 4 rolls. Bake for the amount of time called for on the cresent roll. You can add raspberry jam to the top of the brie before you cover it. There is none left after a party. Another super easy snack is to line a baking sheet with saltine crackers (the cheap ones). Pour over melted butter. Bake until golden brown. These are served at a local restaurant with a smoked fish dip. Yum.

Not a retro recipe, but something with a retro feel...Root Beer Float Pudding. I make it (mostly) sugar free for the diabetics in the family. I make half a recipe and it fits in a jumbo beer mug I found in a thrift store years ago. Full recipe (to make sugar free use SF pudding mix and SF soda): 2 boxes instant vanilla pudding mix 1 1/3 c dry milk powder 3 c root beer 1 c (or so) cool whip Mix dry ingredients. Add root beer. I use an immersion blender to get it smoother because it does get lumpy. Fold in cool whip. I put a bit of cool whip on the top in my mug for the root beer "head". We have made it with orange soda, and someday I want to try red soda or cream soda.

Aldi really does make a difference. It’s our most local store here in uk where I live and I’m very lucky as can do weekly shops from £20 with just the bits I need without getting lots. Obviously if doing a main shop it can be £50 but just the main weekly top up of bread, eggs, milk butter etc is cheap.

I’ve made large and small cream puffs for decades. Always a big hit! I like taking retro snacks to pot-luck gatherings at church. Recently I made the puffs sliced off the top, filled with ham spread, then replaced the top. So cute and tasty! If you had used a measuring teaspoon, you would have gotten more bite-sized puffs out of your recipe, as you discovered, they really puff up! I need to try those olives in cheese dough. I like making retro-style cheese balls with dried beef, little smokies wrapped in pastry, and similar appetizers. Right now I’m making old-fashioned fudge for gifting.

You're right, if you put the tuna filling into a food processor & a piping bag (or a ziplock with the tip clipped off) you could pipe it easily into the puffs, The fancy name for the dough you made for the cream puffs is pate a choux. I think a nice boursin cheese would be a yummy filling. You could probably also add herbs or lemon zest to the dough to make it even more special.

We've always made cream puffs by mixing instant vanilla or chocolate pudding mix with whipping cream. It is a very frugal way to stretch expensive whipping cream and you don't need sugar when you use instant pudding mix. Also the pudding mix keeps the whip cream from going flat and runny.

I’ve made something similar to your crackers, only using a dried mix of ranch dressing with the butter. Could also add dill to your original oyster cracker recipe. One of our family favorite appetizers is clam hors d'oeuvres. One can of minced clams, drained, mixed with a package of cream cheese, juice from 1/2 lemon, some lemon zest, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, and a tablespoon of dried onion bits. Mix together, cover and set aside. Slice one package of brown and serve rolls. We usually get 3-4 slices per roll. Lay out the slices on a baking sheet with parchment paper and toast the slices in a 350 degree oven for 3-5 minutes, turn them over and toast the opposite side as well. When the roll slices are toasted and cool, spread the clam filling on one slice and top with a second slice. Warm the sandwiches in the oven for 3-5 minutes and serve immediately.

We had our Christmas party early this year in Minnesota. My brother, sister and I made some traditional holiday lefse. It's kinda looks like a tortilla but made with potato dough. You roll it up with butter and sugar, delicious. But it can be difficult to master. This year the recipe I used was great and the family was happy. It's as much fun to get together to make it as it to eat it. Love the old ways. And I am definitely trying the oyster cracker idea, what a cheap and great idea.

My family had Pâté Choux or Crème Puff dough filled with sweet goodness. My Grandmother worked in a bakery and made fancy pastries and was head cake decorator. She always made sweet custard to fill the puffs, but I've made shrimp or crab meat cream cheese filling (canned seafood, cream cheese thinned with milk, a touch of cocktail sauce, garlic & onion powder) and also chicken salad. Savory puffs are delicious, as are plain cheese puffs (no olives, but a good idea). And we use Ranch Dip Mix in the butter mixture to coat the crackers - I do it by eye so I don't know the amounts). Thanks for encouraging people with easy to make entertaining foods. It eases the "what to make" panic if you're not sure. Btw, a good verse to keep in mind is Hebrews 13:2 "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." Have a blessed day! 💖✝👑✝

I grew up in Minnesota. We had an enclosed porch. In the winter that porch became a frig/freezer. We would make Christmas candies and set them on the porch to set; almond bark, chocolate covered peanuts, chocolate covered marshmallows with peanuts, annisse candy, candied pretzels, etc. Very fond memories and simpler times.

Hi Emmy & Paul, I loved this video... I use my mother's and grandmother's cookbooks everyday and I am 77 years old so the recipes are definitely "classics"! I have made the small cream puffs for years, filled with whipped cream or chocolate pudding. But, one that is always a favorite are the puffs filled with smoked salmon and cream cheese mixture. There are never any left! My younger granddaughter and I also just finished with this years Christmas cookies that are all vintage recipes. We have been making them for 3 generations now and everyone always raves about how good they are. I think it has to be from using shortening and real butter as well as a lot less sugar than newer recipes call for. A Wesson oil cookbook from the 40's (missing the cover so can't be more precise!), a 1950's Gold Medal recipe book (also missing the cover!) and for regular meals a 1961 Better Homes & Gardens Casserole Cook Book are my go to recipe sources! Merry Christmas to all!

I have been making flour tortilla pinwheels since the late 80's. You can use spinach and sundried tomato tortillas for Christmas colors. The variations are endless. My biggest rave review was from the best Italian cook I have ever known, it was a spinach tortilla smeared with cream cheese mixed with diced canned green chilis, sliced black olives and some ranch dressing mix. It was rolled up, encased in saran and refrigerated overnight and sliced. She ate a ton and never stopped raving!

My grandmother made cream puffs several times a year, but most notably around the holidays. It was always my Dad's favorite. I also remember the ever present bowl of assorted nuts in the shells, complete with metal nutcrackers, just sitting out on the coffee table. As a kid, I loved getting to pick out my favorite nut to crack.

I'm right there with you I only use unbleached flour. And if I can get organic all the better. But Lidl is the same way they only sell bleached flour. I actually stopped shopping at Lidl even though they have some good prices they have a lot of bioengineered food and you don't have more than one option. So it would require you to maybe do part of your shopping. And then you'd have to go to a different store. Some people that kind of stuff doesn't bother them but we just don't want to put a bunch of chemicals and things in our body that's not good.

Living in HI, the prices you quoted sound like a dream :-) I LOVE your videos, since we think alike. I collect vintage cookbooks for the easy ingredients recipes and already bought some of the ones you introduced incl. just now that Pillsbury cookbook. Your presentation at the end looked absolutely lovely and I can imagine making, serving and eating all three recipes (that is why I immediately bought that book online). I was born and raised in Germany and cook many of my grandmother's recipes (like a green bean soup some days ago) since the modern versions do not appeal to me . I am an older generation, so grew up with the old fashioned recipes. Have a great week and may God bless you and Paul for the blessings you bring to others.
