I take a close look at my friend's father's 1960's era Parker 45 fountain pen. I had to clean it up since it hadn't been in use in decades. I take a look at the history of the Parker 45 and Parker's collaboration with the Shanghai Hero Pen Company which eventually gave rise to the Parker 45-like Hero 800, Hero 616 and Moonman M80. I demonstrate inking the pen and do a writing sample.

Thanks for the mention. Glad you enjoyed my videos. I echo comments on Iroshizuku inks, I had a sac in a Watermans dissolve from the ink. The 45 is one of Parker's iconic pens. They stick with a model for a long time. From my view great engineering, function over form design.

Thank you for the disassembly info, I had you playing along as I took my 1971 apart to have a good look at the nib... I even got it back together so thank you for the excellent advice!

You gave that pen a happy restore, it’s back in action. Nice work. I have a Parker 45 in black with silver or chrome cap, I think mine is newer than this one. I enjoyed the history about the 45 being named that due to the popularity of the westerns. Interesting! I look forward to seeing what’s up next.

I have a number of 45s and have to say they are among my all time favourites. The ones I have were via eBay, all but one being second hand and one being New Old Stock. Every one of them is outstanding.

I enjoyed the history of the 45. I also assumed that it was a much older pen. I usually gloss over videos about vintage pens because I'm not interested in filling systems that involve latex sacs. I'm glad to hear that this is a cartridge/converter pen. If I ever decide to dip my toes into the world of vintage pens, the Parker 45 looks like a good place to start.

I'm not really into slim pens but the 45 with the deep posting cap and the long tapering section is joy to hold.

Love me some 45's,and this was a great review! Nice Parker history recap, and especially enjoyed the disassembly. I'm on the lookout for a new section, to restore a dark green 45 with steel cap and gold clip, clutch ring, and nib. The sections of these pens seem a bit fragile, I've seen several with distortion. Great writing pens (even the steel nibbed ones) and an affordable way to try out vintage pens, which a lot of the time offer superior balance and engineering (much lower tolerances) to modern pens.

Glad you enjoyed it, Rebecca. The plastic on many of these early pens have a history of shrinking and warping over time.

Hey Douglas, thanks for the review. I actually have one of these on its way to me in the next while; I got a killer bid price on one kitted out with a 14k nib, 10k gold filled cap version. Hopefully it will be in writing shape when it arrives. Look forward to the next review.

Excellent Hunter! I have just received two Moonman M80s; one regular size and one mini, pocket sized. The pen is an exact copy of the Parker 45. I've borrow the Parker 45 I reviewed here back from my friend to compare it to the Moonman for an upcoming review. Enjoy your 45! I was surprised how great it felt in the hand and what a great writer it was!

Based on the cap, the converter was a replacement. The pen was from the 1960s (conical indent was only made for the 1960s ones), and the converter style is definitely later (not sure, but probably 1970s, or even later.) Like many of the period, quite a slim pen, but IMO nicer than the 51 to write with (I know, heresy. 😁) The collector is difficult to get clean. As they're not a material easily damaged, I resort to an ultrasonic cleaner for them. I have several I've redone (waiting for slide converters to arrive for 2, as that's a later type used, and the squeeze/aerometric type are insanely priced. I might get a regular modern Parker piston converter if I planned to keep them, but they're going to friends.) Not all are being given away. I have, currently, a burgundy plastic from the 1970s with a steel nib, and I'm currently using a flighter with a gold nib from the 1960s. (Of course I have the probably original aerometric converter!😉) Great history, overview and review of a lovely pen! Thanks, Doug!

Thanks, Paul! The Parker 45 is a LOT nicer than the Parker 51 for me. The balance, the grip, the POSTING! Beautiful pen. Thanks for the 411.

I have one of those. As the differences go, mine has "Made in France" text on the cap and "M" stamped on the bottom side of that thingamajig you unscrew to extract the nib. Lovely pen with lovely feeling when being capped. Thanks for the video, Doug!

Hello friend, I have seen several videos from your channel because I have problems with a parker pencil 45 that I bought. They told me it was useless but apparently they deceived me because it seems that they have modified part of the place where the mines are loaded. I have seen in this video that you have next to the pen that you clean a mechanical pencil, I would like to know if you can make a video showing its operation and its mechanisms so that I can compare with mine and see what is wrong with it. Thanks and greetings from Argentina.
@InkquiringMinds

I have not disassembled this Parker 45 pencil because it doesn't belong to me and it is working perfectly and I don't want to break it. As I show in this video, you put the new leads into the front of the mechanical pencil one at a time. I don't know anything about them further than that. Sorry.
@P-H-G
@P-H-G Год назад
@@InkquiringMinds I really appreciate your quick response to my message. At this moment I have watched your video carefully and I have verified that this mechanical pencil loads the pencil lead in front, that did not seem practical to me, but I did not take into account that it is an antique. I have noticed this when watching your video carefully, especially at minute 16:27 where you can see the inside back, that closure seems not very neat, but of course, I did not take into account when these mechanical pencils were made. I was worried, thinking that I had bought something defective, but your video has been of great help and your reply even more. Thank you for your work. Excellent reviews. Parker pens are my favourite, my father had an old Vacuomatic 35 that unfortunately was stolen from me, hence my taste for Parker pens. Again; thank you so much. Greetings from Tucumán, place of the birth of Argentine independence.
