Vintage Philips speakers, why I am hunting them so hard now

I was recently able to pick up a pair of 9-driver Philips Deforest home-built speakers - 1 x AD12100W8 woofer, 4xAD5060SQ8, 4xAD0160T8 Tweeters per cabinet. They're just over 1m tall, about .7m wide, about .3m deep. Unlike the RH499's that have (probably) the same drivers, these have the 4 Tweeters in a square configuration surrounding the woofer (which is located at the top of the baffle board), and the four midrange drivers are in a vertical line below the woofer in the center of the baffle board. Very clean and detailed, I have not driven them very hard, but they sound excellent on jazz, vocals, symphonic music. With the tweeters spread out around the woofer, I don't get a great feeling of instrument position in the sound field as one might get with one tweeter or tweeters in a vertical array. I'm in Canada, and the Philips Deforest drivers were sold a LOT out of one electronics parts company in Montreal where I used to live. My cost: $85 CDN, so a real steal (about 1.5x what ONE midrange can sell for). At some point I'm going to compare them to my oldest set of Deforest speakers, which have 1 x AD10100W8, 1 x AD5060SQ8 mid and 1 x AD0160T8 tweeter... I built those myself 45 years ago and still love them.

I would RUN out, and buy the Kummer speakers ASAP!!!! They are amazing speakers, and at a very low price.. I have Isophon drivers, in my own speaker system Jealvox Sound Monitor and they are world class, and rare rare..

Nice video! My first speakers where audio professional ap50 beautiful Belgium speakers. My dad has them now but I still love them to death. I want to get my hands on a set but they are so rare....

I bought a pair of Philips 22rh427 today for Sek400 (maybe like 40 euro) I think it was a bargain, happy with the sound so far! I am considering to combine them with additional speakers from the series, what do you think about having 4 speakers or even 6 for a stereo system?

What transmission line speakers do you have there. If you get a good pair you put the sub woofer on eBay.

Je hebt helemaal gelijk, de meeste mensen weten niet wat philips speakers waard zijn en hoe ze klinken. Ik heb al veel verschillende philips speakers gehad en ze klonken allemaal erg goed, de 22ah489, 22ah495, 22ah463, 22ah467, 22rh457 en een set zelfbouwspeakers van philips met 12" bass speakers, en allemaal klonken ze geweldig, voor weinig geld!

Hi Andrew, the guy advertising with the B&W 802's is a joker, I found the same speakers on "Marktplaats" last year. Asking price 1700,00 EUR same speakers without the amps though, I sent him a message that I was willing to come and collect the speakers, no reaction and after a few days the ad was gone. I have to admit that it felt nice thinking I purchased a pair of 802's for only 1700,00 Euro's :-)

I like those Philips speakers with the "Hi Fi/High Fidelity International" badge. Also, the Philips motional feedback (MFB) speakers that I've heard were surprisingly good. Some Sansui loudspeaker models sold here in South Africa ca. 1980s used Philips drivers. I don't know if that is a local phenomenon or if it's the same for international models. Good luck with your search; one of our local DIYers was recently restoring that model or similar.

Als je ooit de Philips 22ah467 tegen komt, voor weinig geld ( ik had ze gevonden voor 20 euro ), dan moet je ze zeker eens proberen. Echt een absurd goed geluid, beter zelfs dan van de 495. En wat een power dat er uit die kleine speakers komt! Ze hebben een 8" passieve radiator en een 8" woofer. Niet de 468, want die heeft lampen en het filter en ondanks het dubbele vermogen klinken ze een stuk slechter. Ook de 457, een stukje ouder, heb ik ooit voor 25 euro gevonden, en die klonken ook echt goed! Maar het nadeel was dat die al zo oud waren dat er een hoop moest gebeuren, de lijm van de woofers begon op verschillende plekken te barsten, dus de spider kwam los van de speaker zelf. Succes met je zoektocht! de 499 heb ik ook een tijd naar gezocht, maar die kwamen boven mijn budget uit. Ik heb sinds gisteren een setje BNS Soundcolumn III speakers. Die klinken zelfs een beetje beter dan de Infinity speakers. De bass is een stuk strakker, en je hoort veel meer details. De Infinity's konden natuurlijk een stuk harder, en de bass van de infinity's is veel zwaarder natuurlijk, maar die klinkt gewoon heel anders. Ik ga de infinity's natuurlijk niet wegdoen, want daar ga ik spijt van krijgen.

Marije Steenbergen ken ik ook, ik heb ooit bijna een set bose 205 speakers van hem gekocht, maar toen kwam ik er achter dat bose speakers niet goed zijn. Dat was een jaartje of 2/3 geleden. Door hem heb ik de BNS Soundcolumn III speakers gekocht. Als je bij de video's van Marije Steenbergen kijkt kom je ook veel reacties van mij tegen onder een aantal van zijn video's.
