I stumbled across a vintage 1980 POWERMATIC Model 66 table saw, that had never been assembled or used. The motor was still wrapped in plastic. I bought it (for a pretty good price) and cleaned it up and assembled it and couldn't be happier with it. It's huge, it's powerful, it's clean, it's quiet and it's mine. It took very little rehabbing since there wasn't any wear and tear on it. The bearings and moving parts were basically like new. The top is almost without flaws. It has a few spots but better than the saw I had before. The cast iron parts inside had some exterior rust from sitting around for 40 years, but cleaned up well and without too much effort.

Hi, on that nut tip - make sure, when you tighten that nut in the correct location, that you do not use the same thread area. use a washer or remove a washer, but don,t tighten in that same area. It will break off and you will get a cross thread situation.

I just rescued (2) Powermatic Model 66 table saws from the early to mid 70s. One is about as pristine as I thought could ever be found (a 1-owner home owner saw that was barely used) until I saw yours in this video! Congratulations! The other saw is rough. According to the owner, it sat unused for about 30 years, and of course, where they stored it was right below a roof leak, so needless to say, the table is pitted, the 3PH 5HP motor is shot, and all of the caked on dust in the cabinet is now cemented in place courtesy of the moisture. I bought it purely for parts to make the other saw whole, because at least it is complete. Strangely enough, and for all of you Powermatic 65, 66, and 72 fans out there...what is missing on nearly every saw you see? Yes, you guessed it, the dust door and the motor cover and the blade raise locking knob. One day some lucky guy will unearth all of those missing motor covers and dust doors! All that is left to find is the original blade guard and I'll have my trip down memory lane in high school wood shop will be complete. Great find Darin, fun video, and enjoy your new 1970s Model 66!

WOW! Awesome table saw! I remember in my high school days in woodworking class, I used an older year similar to yours, a 12" blade 5 hp Powermatic cabinet table saw & I read the schematics of it one time my teacher left out & had four belts & was an impressive, powerful table saw, I wish I knew what model it was & wish I could have one that durable, anyway your video is awesome!, thanks for posting it. : )

Thank you. I do love it. I would love to put a better fence on it someday but I am super happy with it.

@@DarinBeard yea that fence looks like it could use an upgrade. You would love the square rail style. Mine had a biesemyere fence with the original powermatic square tube style rails. I just bought an accufence and I love it. I had an older unisaw with the unifence which was pretty good. The square tube style fence is diffently the way to go. Watch eBay those fences and rails pop up from time to time.

Do you have to take the table off to change out the motor? I have a model 68 which I have used and loved for 40+ years. the motor finally gave up the ghost but I did find the same motor for replacement. now I am not sure what to do!?!

I love the saw and it's running perfectly. I even moved across the country and it's heavy and was hard to move, it is still going great.

That was awesome. I am looking at a used Powermatic Model 66 but the owner says it's a project, so I need to get it in working order. Hoping to find a guide.

Your saw is actually a 1980. The first two numbers in the serial number are the year of manufacture, the next two numbers are the model of the equipment and the last numbers represent the number of that saw made that year....what a rare find for you sir! Congrats

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I am still excited about that saw. One day I'll replace the fence with a better one but it's not bad as is. It just takes careful adjustment when setting it.
@davidfesta3061
@davidfesta3061 4 года назад
what I understood..was just the gold. 1980's and later used the first 2 digits as the year...my green with the stripe also starts with the 80...though the original owner told me he bought in the 70's..can you clarify? .
@davidfesta3061
@davidfesta3061 4 года назад
also to continue..there are also green with the white stripe 66's where the serial number begins with 36...

Hello Darin Beard. If you want a Powermatic T-Square fence from the last 66 year in 2005, including NOS rails for 52" system, reply to this email and I will give you a good deal. I updated my 66 with a Very Super Cool T-square fence that directly mounts to extant 66 rails with no modification. I had the NOS rails from another source and they have never been mounted or used. This system will blow away your old-school, round tube fence system.

How do you like the fence? I have a 80s craftsman and have seen some of these powermatic tube style fences available used for cheap. Thinking of upgrading.
@DarinBeard
@DarinBeard 3 года назад
This one is just ok. It has a little play so I have to measure both sides of the blade and adjust as needed. I would like to upgrade the fence someday.

Hey Daren, do you have any idea what the thread pitch is on the blade arbor nut? I have a similar old saw that my research says might have the same arbor shaft... problem is when I bought it (used) that was the only missing piece. And of course it is both obsolete and proprietary enough that the manufacturer won’t release that information. My best guess is a 5/8-12 ACME, but it’s pretty unfamiliar to me. Thanks if anyone has this info.

I don't know. Powermatic won't tell you? That would be mean.

Like they say, It ain't the years, its the miles that count! Awesome find, awesome rehab. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that 40 year old Baldor motor still wrapped in plastic! Was yours a 5HP or a 3HP?
@DarinBeard
@DarinBeard 3 года назад
I would have to look because my memory is terrible but I am almost positive it was 3 hp.
