This vintage transport film, produced by British Transport Films in 1980, is the final report in a series of 13 topical films, produced since the far reaching plan for the modernisation and re-equipment of British Railways in 1955 started to take effect, to log the many developments - new services, equipment, techniques - wherever these have been introduced. They provide a unique pictorial record of the progress of British Railways.
A review of innovation and development within BR and its businesses, including: modernisation of freight facilities and service to new companies; progress of the Bedford/St. Pancras electrification project; paved track and permanent way maintenance; Sealink's "Galloway Princess"; Seaspeed's SRN4; and the Research department's magnetically levitated vehicle. For general showing.
Former BTF employee, Alan Wilmott now of Windjammer Films, comments that this was one of the last BTF productions undertaken and completed before the break-up of the film unit. Evidently it was touch and go as to whether this film was even started, such was the air of inevitability about the demise of BTF by this time.

A great bit of archive video there mate, thanks for sharing. It's a shame to see how things were looking so good back then and have gone to the dogs by now :/

I travelled on the hovercraft service from Dover to Boulogne back in '89. It was hardly a smooth ride. Also crazy to see a maglev train being developed at Derby. It was certainly a lot slower than the maglev service in Shanghai which runs at speeds of 270 mph.

Great innovation and technology, shame then that 40 years on we buy most of our trains from Switzerland and Germany. A disgrace.

HST yes. APT no. (And a power car mid-train was super stupid.)
@29brendus
@29brendus 2 года назад
No it wasn't. Until recently, before individually powered cars, Type 90s trains (for example) were pushed all the way from Glasgow to London as the 'pantograph' powered unit was at the rear on the return journey. That is more extreme than a centrally placed pantograph unit.

@@jonahspiper I agree, they gave up too easily after a few journalists got queasy. And when you consider how much was ploughed into Concorde compared with the less than £50M for the APT, they could have straightened out track every curve between London and every other major city.
@grahamariss2111
@grahamariss2111 2 года назад
@@29brendus But the APT would have been rendered uneconomic by additional crew needed to serve the two halves of the train.
@29brendus
@29brendus 2 года назад
@@grahamariss2111 A valid point, but probably it wouldn't make too much difference? I'm not sure if 2 buffet cars would be needed? I am assuming that there is a passage through the the power car? I daresay it was experimental, but an interesting time nevertheless and no doubt some of the technology was fed to the HST, and class 87 / 90, etc
@grahamariss2111
@grahamariss2111 2 года назад
@@29brendus The APT had two buffet cars, for safety reasons staff could not transit through the power cars when powered up so guards were to act like bus inspectors with two guards joining and leaving the train at stations.

Meanwhile in the United States we don't even have electrified rail in most parts. And they had hovercraft back then. Like what are we doing.

@frank6842 2 года назад
@@BlackMan12331 "modernized" we're still running diesel engines. Amtrak even put it in order for diesel electric trains so we're going to be on the diesel for the next 50 years at least instead of just electrifying the rail

and the fact that the HST Was already 5 years in use and the APT Was in testing! America still doesn't have anything like the HST And the Acela came 20 years later!
