My vintage Kamasa 3/8" Ratchet was seizing up and needed some lubrication. Heres how to take apart a circlip retained round head ratchet for repair

A bit of a different style of video here, let me know what you think in the comments.
I use dry lubricant for my ratchets as I find it doesn't gunk up the internals and as its designed for the moving parts of bike chains I've found it fine for my ratchets. Leave me a comment for what lube you use for your old or modern ratchets.

Thanks for the great video. I successfully fixed my Pitsburg Rachet and saved the trip to Harbor Freight for exchange. Keep up the great work.

I have a 1/4" Craftsman USA that sat out and no longer worked. Took it apart by letting it sit with penetrating fluid. Knocks the dirt and rust off. Followed by some WD40 and and alcohol clean. I let air dry and with can of air. I lubricated with some Permatex Assembly lube. Worked as new. This video helped take it apart. Ty

Well it’s better than nothing that’s for sure, personally I would of got a dreamel wire wheel inside the teeth and given the mechanism a good dunking in petrol paraffin, followed by air hosing then greased. But each to their own. Just good to see people looking after their tools.

Good to the point video. Agree with others you should flush out contaminants with brake cleaner or penetrant before adding lubricant. Super Lube with PTFE is also a highly regarded grease for ratchets by the fanatics on the Garage Journal forum. Three ounce tube is less than $5 and available at most hardware stores. Really excellent stuff, search the reviews.

Surprised what s good greasing can do. Had an old Mac ratchet, clunky old thing something like a 40 tooth. Some grease made it very smooth. I tend to do my ratchets at least a couple of times a year.
@DadDiaries
@DadDiaries 6 лет назад
I was pleased it was brought back so quickly. My concern was that the ball bearing part of the switch mech was too far gone and it would switch correctly. That's a great regime for looking after ratchets...I might actually do that myself to keep them all tip top :)

This is an identical mechanism used in the Herbrand ratchet. I just cleaned one that was passed down to me and it was full of some sort of dirt (?). Even though I cleaned it out pretty well with brake cleaner and lubed it, it's still a bit sticky in one direction. It would be helpful if the pawl mechanism could be removed, but there isn't an obvious way to do that. Any idea of how to remove it?
@DadDiaries
@DadDiaries 5 лет назад
I too couldn't see how the pawl was removed but I didn't have to do that to service it :)

I would like to know how to disassemble the inner core and shorten the spring in hopes that it may loosen the ratchet as every single one of these are way too tight, with my Craftsman ratchet they are extremely easy to take apart and shorten the bring a very small amount and it lightly Morgan's the ratchet to where I literally have the best one in the world I was hoping to try that with these garbage ones.

I think it's called the pawl. If you get in touch with draper via their website they should be able to sort a replacement part. I've had to get a part for a drill before and they were very helpful

saludos maestro, cuando este no hace la función que corresponde o sea que patina en el interior, ya no hay nada que hacer? porque con la sola engrasada no tiene, muchas gracias
@DadDiaries
@DadDiaries 4 года назад
