Craftsman “Tri Wing” 43796 Ratchet TOTAL TEARDOWN & Comparison To The Inexpensive Taiwanese Ratchet

Craftsman “Tri Wing” ratchet was kind of a trial balloon that didn’t go over to well with customers at the time. Main problem probably being that it was foreign made and at the time made in USA carried a lot of weight. Not the worst ratchet but not that great either. I compare it to the well known inexpensive Taiwanese ratchet that everybody that started with a cheap socket set remembers.

Excellent comparison. Surprising how similar these two are. I’m personally a fan of this style Craftsman ratchet. I know they got a lot of hate as the first overseas manufactured ratchet for Craftsman, but I’ve had a set of all three sizes of these since 1982/3 and they’ve been my go to ratchet since then. Even with minimal maintenance, they’ve never missed a beat. I also think that they’ve aged well appearance wise. I remember not liking what they looked like when I first got them compared to the previous style Craftsmans, but now I think these look timeless and classic.

Yes I think where these are better to the less expensive ratchet is the feel and finish. The handles felt better and the bodies were more substantial. The chrome also seemed better on the Craftsman. The mechanism also seems a little smoother. I think they finished the teeth a bit better also.

lol i have the same way of thinking.. some of my craftsman ratchets i used to hit with hammer and they ere my beater set,, now there my classics and are all pollised up best i could and there in the collection never to be used again.. and they do look timeless and classic,,, and i am buying more old ones too..

I like the way these look, & have a lot of nostalgia with this type of Craftsman, unfortunately I broke them nonstop, I obviously still have them, but now they stay clean & I enjoy seeing them in my drawer with the other tools that are now retired & serve as toolbox queens, they’ve earned it

Those spring rings are such a pain in the ass to take out and put back in. Looking for a way to take it out without damage to that ring.

I think a lot of people have good luck using like those mini screwdriver sets. I see them at Dollar Tree all the time.

Tri-wing models were supplied by Stanley. Look at a Stanley ratchet from the same era, 1986-1991, it is almost identical to this Craftsman.

I like tools, I like your channel, round head vs. pear head ratchet wrench, which one is better?thx.

If you’re talking about new ratchets it would be pear head. If your talking about vintage ratchets that depends. There were some really good roundhead designs that could compete with box or pear heads back then.

I have a ¼" & ⅜" drive but made in the USA. I used them extensively and never broke them. They been used on two motorhomes, cars and motorcycles (BMW) . I've seen S-K break when used improperly. Nice video Note, I looked it up and my two were made in Taiwan 😐. I went out and bought two S•K (made in USA) wrenches. What can I say, I'm a tool snob. 🙂

Hi, nice video and explained everything very well. I have the same craftsman ratchet that needs a new pin. Do you know where can I find a new pin to replace the broken one? Thanks

The only place I know that you might find a repair kit is on eBay but they can be a little pricey. If you just need a working ratchet and the old one doesn’t have sentimental value you can take the old one to Lowe’s. They should be doing craftsman warranty

@@snapringchronicles3020 Thank you for the quick reply. I did try exchanging at Lowes but they declined saying it was "too old". I'll check Ebay for a repair kit as you suggested. Thank you!

Wow, thanks for letting us know Lowe’s is not honoring the Craftsman lifetime warranty.

Can the triwing be rebuilt with easy release?
@snapringchronicles3020
@snapringchronicles3020 2 года назад
I haven’t tried it so I can’t say for certain. Do you mean with another mechanism from another ratchet? Because the Tri wing mechanism itself does not have the machining as is to be turned into a quick release ratchet.
