1965 Controlaire 6 channel Reeds with Anco servos. A very reliable set and light weight. It’s got six tone generators so right and left is two channels. The Eindecker was originally designed as a scale control line model but has accurate dimensions. With a Supertigre .23 it required a hand launch but still flew pretty well with rudder and elevator controlled
by the slow Anco reed servos.
1968 Micro Avionics 5 channel. An alternate version
Of the famous Orbit set. The sticks are pretty long and the springs
Are stiff. A very reliable set.
Orbit 3+1 is actually an analog proportional just a bit more sophisticated
Than galloping ghost. Very reliable but limited to 3 channels. A micro
Switch would kick in the aileron servo once the throttle got to ¾ throttle.
The trim knobs on the side gave had a huge range.
Royal Classic 5 channel. Made from a kit this was a reliable and cheaper
Option to digital proportional. It had two integrated chips on the mainboard but the receiver and servos had a bunch of transistors. Lots of soldering. The DeBolt P-Shooter is a delightful airplane. Lots of dihedral and trike landing gear make for a stable aerobat. It’s light and maneuverable and can do tight inside and outside loops. Rolls need some rudder mixed in.
Logictrol 5 channel. This was THE set to have if it wasn’t an Orbit. Very reliable and the open sticks looked professional. Stiff springs and long sticks required big hands. The Astro Hog is a big airplane. This version has strip ailerons and no dihedral. It’s heavy at 9 lbs so it lands fast. Aerobatics are pretty good and it is surprisingly fast.
Heathkit 5 channel. The Spam Can. A lot of these were built successfully due to the extensive instructions. It was essentially a Kraft system but it saved money and some people just liked putting things together. The Staggerwing is a Royal kit and it’s impressive because of all the balsa structure. A work of art. This whole thing is a builder’s delight.
PCS 6 channel. Cliff Weirick’s version of the Kraft system. His Chipmunk was part of the ads for this set. This is the Goldberg Chipmunk and it’s a very nice flying model with flaps and mechanical retracting landing gear.
World Engines Expert 5 channel. Nice open sticks and a professional appearance. The Warlord is the original airplane. Fiberglass fuselage and foam wings which featured tandem landing gear. A very stylish airplane that featured a flying stabilizer. It was fast with a Super Tigre Bluehead .60
Micro Avionics Orange box 4 channel. This is after the green box and probably contemporary with the wood grained box. The Ryan ST by Sig was a builders airplane with lots and lots of pieces. Flies nicely with an OS .90 four-stroke engine but is a little tippy on the narrow track landing gear.
Pro Line 6 channel and Warlord #3. Fiberglass fuselage and built up wing with Rhom Air retracts. Very pretty paint job and the airplane is quite light.
Silk and dope on the wing and lots of detail work. It was inspired by Dave Gierke’s Novi III control line stunt model. The final version of the Warlord featured a thicker wing, flaperons and a tuned pipe Rossi 61.
Orbit 6 channel 1972 version. A nice set with a smaller transmitter than the original black box. The Super Pitts has lots of scale features and a longer tail for better tracking. It was build just after Warlord #3 which explains the paint job. Silk and dope all over the wood structure.
MRC Mark V 5 channel is a cute little transmitter. Quite a bit smaller than average but nice sticks and a good feel to it.
Kraft 6 channel sport series with open sticks. Good feel and size and a bit cheaper than the pro sets. The Kyosho Pitts S2 is a nice size but quite squirrely until a 3 axis gyro is added. That transforms the model into quite a nice precision flyer.
JR Century 7 PCM was a remarkable set. PCM is super reliable and the metal transmitter is a hefty solid unit with great sticks. This is Lloyd Nicholson’s fun fly Kaos with a Rossi 60 and tuned pipe up front. Very fast for a Kaos and exceptionally well built. Silk and dope over wood.
JR Galaxy Computer 8 is a remarkable set. It has a lot of programmable functions and a number of model memories. Very advanced for the time. The Ultrasport 60 is basically a Kaos with a taller fuselage. This gives it good Knife-edge flight. It’s surprisingly fast for a thick wing but is reluctant to stall turn even with a very large rudder. Overall a nice flying aerobat. Silk and dope over wood.
JR Max Computer 6 is like the Galaxy but more affordable. Lots of programming available but only 1 model memory. The Tipo 750+ is a perfect airplane that does everything well with no vices. The Hanno OS 60 with tuned pipe puts out huge power for this big airplane. Fiberglass fuselage and foam and balsa wing with Monokote. Springair retracts.
