tbh the Sanyo 3-in-1 stereos were a bit crap, but I still love seeing them as they were the stereo most people had when I was a kid. Congrats for saving it from e-waste.

Thanks Tone! It was probably a budget unit compared to a quality component outfit - but certainly much better than today's budget turntables!

I don't know why these units aren't more appealing to people. They are still good little units, and are not complete trash like todays cheap turntables and gear. Yes, at this point in time they need maintenance, but what vintage gear doesn't? Upgrade the stylus, re-capp, new belts, and the radio units are usually great in these old timers. I'm surprised when the younger generation are discovering vinyl and even cassettes again, why these small hi-fi don't command more love. Maybe in time. They are built quite well, are quite repairable with parts still, and with the silver face, they look quite classy.
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler 8 месяцев назад
I agree with all that, but I guess it is the fact that these things are bulky and take up a lot of bench space - and then you have to put speakers somewhere! People like small and compact these days!

It’s always nice when you can hear me prompting you as I raise my voice at the computer screen all the way from Houston, Texas. I was hoping you would try a heat gun/hair dryer on that shell, and you did and it worked. The glove scenario was hilarious. For months, I have been wishing you would don gloves when working with solvents. Then the first time you do, they fall to bits. You can’t make this stuff up. Nevertheless, once again, your ingenuity and persistence have returned a forlorn piece of equipment back to service. Nice work.
@TheUltimateRecycler

Thanks Elaine! I appreciate the prompting from Texas - I must have heard it subconsciously! Haha, yep the glove incident was a little funny! Obviously they are not acetone proof! I'd better write that on the box! 🤣

I've cleaned many similar units and my method is baby wipes and isopropal alcohol followed by brasso to clean the perspex lid !
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler 7 месяцев назад
Yep IPA is a pretty good cleaner in many situations and brasso is a great polish to remove marks on perspex as well as bakelite 👍😊

We had a similar one in the late 70s, My wife would play Hot August Night LP every Saturday at high volume while she did the weekend housework. It was also connected to our VCR later on for stereo sound. I tracked down a Hot August Night LP recently to relive the old days... yeah, it's not the same 🙄
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler 6 месяцев назад
Neil Diamond records actually still sell pretty well Dave - I guess it's just more people trying to re-live the old days! Perhaps the housework is the issue? 🤔🤣

I had one just like that, it was my first console hifi. It also included an 8track. I picked it up at a thrift store for $5 and wired my tv into the input. I hung cheap speakers all around my bedroom and used the player like a surround sound. It was huge and took up far too much space, but I loved that machine.

Always use isopropanol with plastic acetone can damage plastic parts more easily. That cartridge seems to have a standard headshell so it is easy to replace.

@@ShadowMoonFarms my mother would kill us as kids, if we touch her scissor. But they cut so well. Lucky or unlucky my Mrs does not sew. 20 years ago we got married and she wanted a sewing machine. I purchased her one. She said this is cheap shit and we went out together and she picked a $400 plus machine. The next day I found her sitting there hand sewing. She didn't know how to use it. Lucky I do.

Thanks for taking the time to share this Chris as it clearly wasn't worth your time on a purely resale basis. As you say I reckon it'll continue to free up and run more steadily, I hope you get a decent sale ! There is of course quite a Vinyl resurgence going on, funny how the kids who tell you you're old fashioned for playing a CD rather than streaming, then go out and buy Vinyl ! 🤔😂 Can you tell me what the spray was that you used on the pots, I'm not familiar with that ? A Poly bag is always a good test of how sharp your scissors really are ! 😉
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler 8 месяцев назад
Thanks Andy! I think I'll play some records on it in the shop - that should get a sale! Yeah CDs are so old fashioned! 😲🤣 The spray is DeoxIT Fader F5. It's not cheap but does work very well! I think there's a link for it in my Amazon store. Those scissors would have struggled with paper! 🤣

Cumbersome is the right word Dee - these things are just too large for the average vintage Hifi enthusiast - and you have to find room for speakers too! I'll play some records on it in the shop and I'm sure someone will come along who can't live without it! 🤣
