Testing vintage skincare to see if the old school skin care products are worth. second look for inclusion in our modern skincare routine. From Ponds, Anne French, Nivea, Pears Soap and more
Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin. You guys know I am all about discovering new brands, Korean skincare and finding the latest must have skincare ingredient. But are we overlooking some of the vintage and more old school skincare products which could be adding so much value to our routines?
In this video classic skin care products are put to the test to see how they compete with some of our modern favourites and whether there is still a place for them in your skin care routine.
I would like to stress that just because something is now 'NEW' it doesnt mean it is any less effective and I honestly have had so many of my preconceptions shattered through trying the products so I would encourage everyone to have an open mind to the products which could work well for them.
I would love to know your thoughts and feelings on any of the products mentioned and whether you have used them in your own routine so please leave me a comment below.
This is a little different to the usual content I create for the channel so if you enjoyed it please give the video a thumbs up to let me know.

Haha the smell of the pink Oil of Olay! That was my first moisturizer. My mom gave me a bottle when I was 4. I was into makeup and since I wasn’t allowed to wear any at that young age, my mom gave me skincare instead. Haven’t stopped moisturizing since 😂

Strange how some people would think old stuff that exist to this day are ineffective. Less modern, old formulation sure, but if it exists for 30+ years I'd think Whoa that thing must be really good at doing something to survive for this long 🤷‍♀️

I'm a 55-year-old guy. My grandmothers used Olay Original Hydrating Lotion (pink bottle) for a very long time. So I started using Olay Original about 25 years ago. I gotta tell you, people can't believe I'm in my 50's. Most people say I look 44 or 45. So Olay has been doing a great job! I'm not the kind of person who buys something because it's affordable. I'll pay (within reason) what I have to for a great product. So my devotion to Olay is how well my grandmothers' skin looked and the compliments I continually receive. Olay is an awesome product! My mom always said, "just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's better." I totally agree and would recommend anyone looking for a hydrating lotion to give Olay Original a try!

Cold creams (as well as aqueous creams) were generally used because Makeup was mostly oil-based and very heavy and they needed a heavy-duty cleaner to remove it. Obviously then after using a bar cleanser and alcohol-based astringent (which was very common) moisture needed to be added back to the skin hence why the Nivea cream (which is a very basic moisturizer), Elizabeth Arden as well as just using cold cream as a moisturizer was very popular. The brand Besame (who produces some of the most beautiful recreations of vintage makeup, mainly lipstick, but with slightly more modern formula) recently came out with a vintage-inspired skincare line that I have been eyeing for a while now and this just makes me want to try it out more.

Brillant video! I ALWAYS have a jar of Pond's cold cream in my cabinet, using it since the 1970's when I was in high school. I've been double cleansing for many years, using Pond's to remove my makeup and a cleanser to finish the job. So once in a while, I'll reach for it! When Covid hit, I bought a large box of Dove moisturizing soap bars to put by every sink. Hand soap was sold out everywhere, so this worked beautifully for my husband and I. I'm loving your content, Rob❤️❤️❤️

Mom has used Ponds and Dove for many years and Dad (RIP) used the original Neutrogena glycerin bar which was the US version of Pears. He also used Seabreeze afterwards. I was a big fan of the original Oil of Olay beauty fluid which was light pink in an art deco bottle with a black cap. I had no idea they still made it but wish they hadn’t repackaged it because the bottle was gorgeous. Astringents were also frequently used after cleansing but (like Seabreeze) they usually had a mentholly-burning feeling on the skin. They definitely weren’t toners but were designed to balance the skins pH after using alkaline cleansers. No serums but a variety of acne treatments Clearasil (tinted), Oxy…., Stridex pads, Ten-O-Six, etc. Oh, and sunscreen consisted of baby oil with iodine mixed in it or QT! I don’t recall my Grandmother’s using anything special for facial skin care unless they used the same thing as their hand or body cream on their face. I saw a commercial the other day that advertised the original scented Jergen’s lotion which was a almond-cherry scented and I can still remember the smell!

I love Pond's ❤ but I love the Boots version too. I'm oily, very prone to acne. This is literally the only cleanser (with warm muslin cloth, and followed by Face Facts cleanser, or Inkey Salicylic cleanser) that absolutely doesn't break me out. ❤❤❤❤❤ My husband has turned me on to Dove soap! The shea butter one is lovely but only on body! What I find amazing is how each of these (Pond's, Olay, Pears) have a strong and iconic identity rather than CeraVe which is soooooi booooorrrrrriiiinnnggggg! ;) All the men (straight, gay, everything in between) in my family love Old Spice. I love the scent too! And yes F Nivea.

Great video. THANK YOU! I left my comment below before your video ended. I was thrilled you mentioned Old Spice. I too love the Old Spice spray as well. But let's talk about the aftershave. Yes, it's not a good aftershave. I prefer aftershave lotion. BUT... because my dad and both grandfathers wore old spice aftershave, I decided to get creative. I bought an atomizer spray bottle. I filled it with Old Spice aftershave. Twice a day I spray my Old Spice aftershave on as a light cologne. I love it, and I get compliments a few times a week. It's a light, fresh, masculine scent that works well and it's not overbearing. Women (and men) seem to love the way I smell because they ask, "What are you wearing?!" Thanks again for the video. You're right. Old school products shouldn't be overlooked. They've been around for decades for a reason.

Hahaha what a fun video! I remember my mom teaching me to use ponds (was not good for my teenage acne so she switched me to the pears glycerin soap and of course the Oil of Olay. In the 90’s I started using a lot of the Olay brand products… when I started doing drag a lot I needed something to get that theater makeup off. Friends suggested Albolene but I switched to The Balm’s Balm Away cleanser. Really they both have a lot of petroleum jelly in them so when Halloween month gets near I’m gonna get some ponds cold cream! (The Balm has some Great long lasting, not drying liquid lipstick & great eyeshadows. They’ve sadly closed their shop near me…)

This video brought back past memories. My grandmother used Oil of Olay religiously everyday from Her early 20’s until she passed away at 88.She had the most beautiful skin I’ve ever seen. So clear and wrinkle free even in her 80’s. People always thought she was at least 20 years younger than her actual age. On the other hand my mother in law swore by Dove soap for a face wash. She gave me a bar to take home to try. Disgusting! I have dry, very sensitive skin. The next morning, my skin was so inflamed and broken out plus the smell of the soap affected my breathing. All around a definite pass for me.

I recently tried Pond's Fragrance Free as my first step cleanse and I actually found it quite drying and irritating! It has a high ph so maybe that's why. I had high hopes because I read it was easier to remove than Albolene, but I'm just going to stick to Albolene. Now I use my Pond's to remove deodorant residue from my armpits and it actually works really well for that.

My dad has ezcema on his body and his uncle brought the Pear soap from England to the Netherlands for him to try. He has used nothing else for about 30 years ! He always buys this at markets at ten packages a time! I used to use Olay beauty fluid when I was younger. It's called Olaz here. 😉

Do you know any modern product that has the same texture as the Olay Beauty Liquid but without the parabens and lye (I know, I know, they safe but I still try to avoid them)?
@rosemary5005
@rosemary5005 3 года назад
I remember the beauty fluid from Oil of Olay and it was the name of the product in the 1990’s, here in Sweden. It wasn’t a product for me though. The same thing with the Dove bar, which I was introduced to during a summer in the UK 1995. I had a great time in Britain but that soap made my skin go peace out on me 😰😕 I’m glad that we have the same opinion about Nivea as a company. They are very very shady, indeed. Nivea cream was more of a lip balm anyway. And not even the best lip balm. This was a fun video 😃 Take care! 🌸🦋💗✨

As a girl, I use Old Spice Whitewater because the scent is fresh, clean and strong enough to last. Plus I just don't care who it's meant for. I work physically all day in the kitchen and then on the farm. Smells fine to me! 😂

Did anyone ever use Yardley Oatmeal range back in the 80s? For my sensitive skin coping with breakouts it was absolutely wonderful, the foaming cleanser was used on a super soft brush that looked like a shaving brush, there was from memory a gentle toner, moisturiser, mask and a spot treatment, I used it for years (one of the early cruelty free brands) until it was discontinued in Australia.

My mum used oil of olay (or ulay as it was called then). She had very dry skin and I told her that she needed something richer but she wouldn't listen. I remember all the products that you mentioned. Really feel my age!

My mom would only wear makeup once in a while. But when she did she would pull out her jar of Ponds Cold Cream to take it off. Take off everything. She wore waterproof mascara and it would take it off. It really was effective as I'd use it too when I was a teen. Maybe I should pick up a jar. Talk about a good husband. Makes his wife a moisturizer. LOL.

My mom used the Pond's Dry Skin Cream (a little lighter than the cold cream). She would use it to remove her makeup - smear it on, tissue it off, followed by a cleanse with Noxema, and more of the Pond's as her moisturizer. Oil of Olay was too pricey in her opinion (and probably not moisturizing enough for her). That Noxema smell though, brings back memories of my mom every time...

I till this day Rob use the Old Spice Deodorant stick.. I FELL in love with the Bearglove scent! OMGOSH! This scent to me is DEFINITELY gender neutral. To me female deodorants make me gag! Years ago, I gave up using the Pear Soap Bar bc it stripped my combo skin. I am still using the CeraVe Cleanser, almost empty and will no longer buy after a video you made, complete transparency when testing on animals. But these old favorites especially the Ponds Cold Cream, remember my aunt using them, and my father using the Old Spice products. Thank you for taking me back in time with these.

I dont know about the Nivea politics but Nivea cream is amazing on dry skin, airplane travel etc. I use tretinoin and sometimes this is the best. What about astral cream lighter more whipped than Nivea. I remember oil of ulay being in glass bottles on my nans shelf. I thought it was amazing luxury

I’ve always gravitated towards the EA 8 hour cream for my lips. I’ve also tried heaps of lip balms but always end up reaching for the 8 Hour. I don’t use it for anything else, and wouldn’t like that sticky mess all over my skin.

I used to use Anne French cleansing milk, but applying it with cotton wool never made me feel clean, I was so ready to move on when face washes became more common. Like most people in the comments, my Mum used to use Oil of Olay, never liked the smell myself. Before the recent explosion of skincare, I’ve used most of the cleansing washes and moisturizers that Boots had to offer, nowadays most of my routine is K & J beauty.

Hey Rob, If Ponds developed a fragrance-free cold cream, or cleansing balm I'd definitely give it a go, but otherwise it's a pass for me. I loved Pears soap & I also used the Noxzema cold cream/cleanser...not sure if that still exists 😋 Have a fantastic week!

@@MadAboutSkin Ponds does have a FF cold cream. It is hard to find, and sadly it is the only FF product in their line up. It's been so comforting to use in the Winter.
