Vintage Story - Is It Better Than Minecraft?

Vintage Story is kind of like minecrafts younger brother, it obviously was inspired by Minecraft, it's voxel based, and the similarities are easy to see. But the differences are where VS really starts to stand out.
I appreciate you checking out the video!

Whenever Vintage Story updates they tends to add quite a lot of new features. The most recent update was mostly a bug fix and optimization update but they still added a lot of new features like 11 species of goats a dear, thats 22 mobs total. New scroll racks, ambient noises and QOL features. The next update will feature the next major story location after the first (which was already massive) as well as new features that make traveling less burdensome i.e ridable mounts and boats.

That’s awesome! I was gonna do a pretty big video on it, but I think I will wait for that next update. You think they might introduce the rust world? Or have they mentioned it?
@Gamer-pk9up

@@samtheashen not sure if or when they will introduce it as this game still has a lot more things planned in the future. I personally am still waiting for a crafting overhaul to remove the 3x3 grid. In the meantime, why not check out the mod Rust creatures. It may not be the rust world but it definitely spices up your survival.

@@Gamer-pk9up I checked out better drifters, feverstome wilds, and the one that adds the variants, those were all awesome I just really wanted a different dimension to explore. Hellscape-ish lol but I’m upset not having it yet, I know it’s a small team and they have all the other new things they are working on introducing. For the grid, if they take out the 3x3 crafting grid, what will that do? You would no longer have to manually put things in there?
@Gamer-pk9up
@Gamer-pk9up 2 месяца назад
@@samtheashen they said in the devlog that they were planning on removing it and replace it with something more “immersive” maybe adding things like different work stations. Maybe for the early game crafting would have to be done by hand. Not sure how it would work but I am hoping it will be like the other mechanics like knapping and smithing.

Well I think that’s a bit harsh on Minecraft, from what I’ve read even from these comments, we wouldn’t have VS without Minecraft in the first place. And with the nether and the end, in Minecraft, it’s still an awesome game. VS just took it to the next level I think.

@@samtheashen I think the problem is that Minecraft doesn't have a good balance between the sandbox aspects and the survival/content progression aspect. I know that this comparison has been done to death but look at Terraria, that game has a stellar balance between the sandbox content (decorative stuff) and content made for progression (weapons, armor and etc) while having one less dimension compared to Minecraft. Minecraft has a lot of potential but if you're not playing with other people or with mods, the game is "wide as a ocean and deep as a puddle", at least that's my opinion.

@@marcelosoares7148 I think that’s a fair take, I agree too. Without mods or a good group of friends (which at that point anything would be fun) then it’s super shallow and gets old after a while. I had an amazing time in terraria and would still say that it’s a masterpiece for sure.

Personally, I find that VS's world engages me more than Minecraft's does. Maybe it's the more drawn out progression, maybe it's the heavier focus on the survival elements over the sandbox ones, the way that much of the crafting is actually done by the player's own hands rather than in the crafting grid. Minecraft is still a great game, but I find that once I've gotten Iron tools and a basic farm up and running I don't really have much else I want to do. Sure I could build some cool structures, but no one else is ever going to see them so what's the point? So I end up getting bored and leaving the game to collect dust. Personally, I think that Minecraft and VS both fill different niches. Minecraft is all about the sandbox part of 'survival sandbox', it's a canvas to let your imagination go and build cool stuff. Vintage story on the other hand, leans more into the survival elements. And this is the part of the game that actively engages me more than Mincraft's sandbox style gameplay
@samtheashen
@samtheashen Месяц назад
That’s definitely a good point, they do fill different niches, and there’s a lot of crossover between the two games, whether they played Minecraft and it got stale like it did for you and found VS or vice versa. Also a good point about Minecraft having more of an emphasis on the sandbox aspect, and while VS is still a sandbox, you absolutely can’t ignore the survival aspects if you want to get anywhere. Like you said, The crafting thing was huge for me as well, crafting with my own hands pixel by pixel or voxel (not totally sure) but yeah the super in depth crafting was one of if not my favorite part of VS. the building up a clay crockpot, putting in the ground and firing it to dry, then making food and literally using it as a crockpot, is just awesome.

That's the point, that VS is no better than Minecraft. This is Minecraft with the right mods, which was made a separate game. That is, Minecraft literally has no restrictions, it can be a story game, a set of challenges, MMORPGs, magic and science sim, Factorio - anything. But VS can only be VS. This is not a bad game. Its the customizability that made Vintage story for me. and i am not talking about the one click install mods (altho i use knapster because my nerves are made of spaghettios for me to knap at a decent pace) but its literal, vanilla, customize button when picking playstyle. just the fact i could define mob nerve, food spoilage rate and hunger accumilation rates, ore density calculations, how hilly/ flat the world would be, how high the sea level is, turn seasons off or on, make the game spawn me in either wetlands, jungle, desert or tundra, modify block gravity to where not only sand and gravel falls, and so does soil, but also cracked rock, also give these blocks sideways instability so they can fall adjacent from there current position, and to modify whether i want realistic distribution of biomes or minecraft-style. can you do all that shit in minecraft? i mean yeah, for **sure**, it just probably takes a minimum of 3 mods, an outside tool to patch them in, and hitting the play button at the correct quantum state of the universe.

The game’s story is being revealed slowly as the game develops. Updates have a purpose and always improve game balance in some way, while adding new features. The game doesn’t lag just because you’re in a jungle. The mechanical side of the game is great fun and very very different from MC. Like exploring? The map is 1million x 1 million across with incredible variety of landscapes and climates, with much to discover. you can open two or five, or ten chests at once and drag items between them. You can eat a polar bear. You can customize your world to an incredible degree. Give it a try!
@samtheashen
@samtheashen 6 дней назад
Thats a good point, it's easy to see what they havent done yet, because all in all I am very impressed with what they have done. Exploration was probably my favorite part, but more structures, dungeons, bosses, etc I think would be sweet, instead of different skins for animals, which are already varied. I'm not trying to bash the game at all, because overall its fantastic.

For a game as generally survival oriented as VS, skill trees seem rather weird. Rather than limit yourself to a skill tree, just go based on learned skill instead, work with what you have to passively improve things, or learn how to work things faster yourself. It's "meh". It's not BAD but leaves alot to be desired. Exploring underground is terrible with the world gen. It's not easily transferable like Minecraft. Huge deep ravines, cave ins, etc. Crafting is mediocre. Alot and I mean ALOT of hoops to jump through to craft anything from clothing, to blacksmithing, to brewing. The hunger system could use a complete overhaul as you'll spend alot of time trying to keep it up. They should change the game's name to Hunger Simulator Story. The classes are a dumpster fire. It only really is tolerable if you play multiplayer with lots of other players then everyone can choose something different and cover/makeup for the HUGE penalties included with every class(excluding the base class). Solo it's simply and utterly NOT worth choosing any of the other classes unless you want an already tedious game more so. The game has an interesting premise but falls flat on it's face in most of the things it's trying to do. It's just simply excruciatingly difficult and unforgiving for no real reason except "game go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" I might come back to it after letting the developer cook for a few years since, to be fair, it's still a WIP.

I don't think I could ever return to Minecraft after experiencing chiselling. There's also really unique lore and in-universe character customisation. Oh, and performance. This game has devs who actually care about optimisation. Playing Minecraft after playing Vintage Story feels so slow and clunky.
