The Strand Patt 23 spotlight was introduced in the U.K. in the early 1950's. Constructed with a die cast aluminium body these stage lamps were the main stay of the U.K. theatre lighting scene for almost 40 years. Recently these lamps have had a new lease of life in domestic and commecial usage by being polished and retrofitted with new lamps and wiring. This video shows the very latest improvements to this growing trade by the installation of a 16 colour LED (5 watt) spotlight as part of the refurbishment. This makes the spotlight low energy yet highly efficient and very cool when on. There are also improvements in the optics by using a two lens system one being a fresnel type giving a soft edge more suitable for home lighting. The newly available LED spotlight is remotely controlled to enable different colour changes or preset colour cycles as shown in this video.

I found four Pattern 23's in the old Cromwell Council Hall, south island New Zealand, also a dust covered example of an old control panel with massive dimmer levers (lockable on or off to a central wheel) been there since the 50's when the hall was built...gave me a good laugh...Ex London Coliseum lighting crew/ Cambridge Arts Theatre/ Prince of Wales, London west end.

I think our little theatre company still has a few of these lamps (120 V versions). I like the way they look polished like that though and the reflector LED is a nice touch as well.

Okay, here's where I have my issue... This vintage 1956 Strand Electric Pattern 23 is a part if theatrical Heritage. The lenses are superior, and I've never seen a light output as sharp, powerful and more evenly beam spread than that of modern lanterns. I happen to own a few of these lanterns, as well as a 123, and 2 157's. All I have done with them is a partial refurb. They are still to this day running from their original type lamps (Made by Philips). I am a strong believer that theatrical heritage such as these, which are becoming more rare and difficult to find, should be kept as was. Heritage is not something to force LED upon and use for home lighting. These lamps have had a rich and historical life, and stu deserve to be cared and treated as such. Personal opinion only.

I get what your saying -- but I'd rather see a healthy afterlife, than thrown in a metal recycle bin and cast away as thousands of them probably have been. I too have a modest collection of about 8 or so Patt 23's, a bunch of 123's and 2 264's.

Hi Hugh. I've got a PAT 123 with a fresnel lens lamp that I want to give to my wife as a christmas present. It has a 500W globe in which is obviously too powerful. Can I buy a lower wattage LED light, like in your video, or do i need to take it to an electrician to get rewired? Cheers, Antony

Hi! I was wondering, I have recently acquired a Patt 23, retrofitted for standard tungsten bulb. Is there anyway to make it more efficient as a lamp for a room, in your opinion?
@HughStreet
@HughStreet 9 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately this lamp is designed as a spotlight and so is designed to illuminate an item not a room. It is ideal to light a picture or room feature not a room in general. If you want a brighter light then some higher wattage tungsten lights can help however the higher the wattage then the hotter the lamp will get and the lamp will have to be wired with this in mind and positioned safely. LED lamps will be much cooler.Hope this helps - if you are specific about what you would like to do I and the type of lamp holder you have fitted then I will try to be specific. Regards Hugh

Hugh Street Thank you! I am planning on getting a wooden tripod for it, and make it as bright as I can. I am thinking of using an adapter to put a 90 degree angle on it, and probably get an LED bulb.

well, we could discuss here if you like. Its no secret. I have 30 pat 23:s here in Sweden. 3 different "heads" I was hoping you could share the secret to get them as beautiful as yours. Ive been trying to remove color with differens results. Nothing gets as i want to. Need to use to hard colour remover so aluminium gets black. So i get double the work. First sanding then polish work. Any ideas of how to make it the correct way. Was there paint on your lamps from the beginning? Do you also know anyone who could be interested in buying lamps that are not finished. I have to many to restore them all.

Jerker Axelsson hi Thanks for your reply. I sent my lights away to a professional in Scotland who will buff them to a high shine using a buffing machine. The cost about £50 each to have done. You have to strip them completely all the electrical bits, reflectors and lenses so that there is just a body left. As for selling them there is a market on eBay and you should get between 50 and £90 so you will have to take into account shipping costs. You say you have three sorts - can you see what they are as I might be interested. Kind regards Hugh

you've ruined it! Why have you taken such a wonderful piece of theatrical history and destroyed it by removing the original lens and bulbs, the light was built to be a profile and should always stay that way. I have several of these in perfect condition and used for educating students. I just don't understand why you would want to do this.

+DJ CHAZ Thanks for your post. Some will say ruined others may say retrofitted and re-used in an alternative environment. The original Patt 23's are dangerous to use in a home environment in their native state. As they say " horses for courses". BTW there was a Fresnel lens option from Strand in the "good old days"
