These reels were really something special. After cleaning this one up and testing it out, it will definitely get some use on the water. I just hope I can find fish big enough to to give this beast of a reel a decent workout!

Hello again! I wanted to tell you that I now have a complete set of the Daiwa 8000 series reels. Since this video introduced me to this 8600 I have become an avid fan of these reels. The last one I got was an 8100 and even that reel is extraordinary. Altogether I now have an 8700 (new), three 8600 (1 new in box), and 8300 and 8100. Just wanted to thank you again for putting me on these extraordinary spinning reels. - Chris

I’d put my Daiwa 7000C Silver Series 1970s spinning reel as a worthy successor to these reels. If you’ve not seen, fished or disassembled a Luxor 1954 “Salmom and Sea” reel you should take a look. I’ve never seen a finer surf spinning reel anywhere from any time. I also have a Mer 52 PUM large surf reel from France of about the same period as the Luxor. It is absolutely the finest vintage surf spinning reel I have ever used. It is a worm gear reel from 1955 with a large ball bearing, stainless and marine brass gearing and a hand machined oscillating mechanism. It is truly unbelievable. It even has an early skirted spool design. Together with the great Mitchell saltwater reels of the same time - 302, 402, 306, 406, etc, - they are very much decades ahead of their time like this Daiwa 8600. Everything you said about this reel is true. I have over 80 vintage surf spinning reels and they are all I use. Enjoyed your video very much!

Hello again! I just wanted to tell you that tonight I finally got an Abu Garcia Suveran reel. You were the first person that ever made me aware of these Suveran reels. I read about them and collected six Abu Garcia center drag reels but never thought I would get a Suveran as their price has continued to go up asthmatically. Tonight I got very lucky. Just like these Daiwa 8000 series reels that you got me so hooked on (I have seven) I have now gotten a reel that was at the very top of my reel collecting bucket list. I have reached 400 reels in my collection and I’m thinking this might be a good time to stop. - Chris

Ever since I first saw this video I’ve been looking for one of these 8600 reels. Just recently I found one and got it for $20. The only problem was that someone had broken the drag knob and had used epoxy to try to repair it. You could not see this problem from photos the seller provided. Of course that repair didn’t work and when I remove the drag knob it fell apart in my hand. Finding a replacement part proved all but impossible. A friend in FL that I often get parts from sent me 5 Daiwa drag knobs to try. None of them would accommodate that spring in the original drag knob but one of them did fit and made the drag function perfectly. I think it was from a 7000C Daiwa Silver Series Reel. After a lot of restoration I now have a perfectly functioning 8600. It is not perfect cosmetically but it is perfect mechanically. You were absolutely correct about these 8600 reels. It is an incredibly strong and smooth reel! I plan to use it surf fishing and can’t wait to try it out. Thank you for recommending this superb reel! I have over 85 vintage saltwater spinning reels in my collection and this 8600 is a great addition!

I have commented on this video several times before now as it has become a favorite of mine. It introduced me to this remarkable fishing reel and I now own three of them. I’m writing again because as a vintage spinning reel collector I got a reel tonight that was at the top of my collecting Bucket List. It got there because of this video and the experience I’ve had surf fishing with my 8600 reels. Tonight I got a Daiwa 8700 in excellent condition. I had only seen one of these before. It had a partially broken foot and still sold for a ridiculously high price. I guess timing is everything because I paid less than half of what that reel cost. I have seen a 8100 and several 8300 reels from this series for sale but they only have two ball bearings. If there are others in the series I have never seen them. I have 238 reels now in my collection of vintage surf spinning reels manufactured before 1980. Of these over 50 are Daiwa reels. The largest number are saltwater Mitchell reels from France. Of these Daiwa reels of this time period my 8600s and now this 8700 are definitely the pinnacle. I have 23 of the Silver Series Daiwas and I love them but even the 7000C can’t match these 8000 series reels. The Silvers are not worm gear reels . I just wanted to let you know I found an 8700. This video of yours is the very best ever made on the 8600! -- Chris

I like a lot of the Daiwa silver series reels as well, but I also agree that these are a step up from the more well known Daiwas. These weren't really talked about much several years ago and now they are commanding higher prices. I guess the cat is out of the bag!

@@TheFishingHobby I think you are right. The 8100A seems to be the most costly and pretty rare.so I won’t be getting that one. I’d like to eventually get a 8300A though. It has two bearings while the 8100A only has one. I’ve also been collecting the blue Shakespeare 2400 series reels. All I need is a 2430. I got all the gold 2700 series with a few doubles but they are not quite as good as the 4 blue 2400 reels. I’ve got the 2400DC, 2410RL, and the 2450 but no 2430. I may never find that last one. The blue Shakespeare 2400 series are definitely Ohmori made but I’m not sure about the gold 2700 series. There are at least 7 reels in the gold 2700 series.- 2700, 2701, 2707, 2710, 2711, 2740, and 2741.- Chris

Thanks for this excellent video tutorial. I found the 2 bearing model 8300. It has more battle scars than your's, is missing its medallion, but wow it's smooth. It's been serviced some time or another because it's lubed with modern blue grease' Got it for 8 bucks because the bail wasn't functioning. Didn't take long to find the problem, the bail kick lever spring was loose. I'll get around to servicing mine soon, but I wouldn't be afraid to duke it out with a 30+ lb freshwater fish as is.

A few days ago I got a Daiwa I had never seen before or heard of - a Daiwa Sport 5000 reel. It is similar to the 8600 also being three ball bearings and the same oscillation system. It is not a worm gear reel but more like a silver series reel such as a 7000C. It is bigger than an 8600 but not quite as long as the 7000C. It is every bit as smooth as the two 8600 reels I have. The main gear is huge, made of superior metal with a solid brass pinion. The finish on the reel is identical to a 9000C not like the other silver series reels. If the 8600 has any flaw it is the weakness of the paint finish. I don’t think it’s a problem as loog as you care for it though. I was just wondering if you had ever heard of a Daiwa Sport. Reel before. I’ve been told they were sold mostly in Europe but I can’t confirm that. This is the only Daiwa like this I have ever come across and I have 41 Daiwas. I want to thank you again for the third time for making this video on the 8600. When I first saw it I was determined to get one and now I have two - one new in the box.

This seems like a decent reel, and mainly a copy of the Penn Spinfisher in design. There's exactly zero for sale on ebay, so for that reason these kind of lose relevance. I think you've overlooked the Mitchell 302 which in my opinion is superior. I don't think the 302 loses anything for only having a bronze (not brass) bushing on the main gear. It's a big bronze bushing. I have a couple, fifty years old, completely neglected, never serviced, and the gear train is tight and solid. After a service they run really smoothly. The bails close like a guillotine. No corrosion internally and even though the external paint disappears, they don't seem to suffer for that reason. All the screws, and all the parts, other than the housing and main gear, and the spool oscillator, are machined stainless steel, including the pinion. The main shaft is bronze. You should check it out.
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 5 лет назад
I have several Mitchell reels and like them very much. I especially enjoy my 408. I don't have anything at all bad to say about them, but this reel is the highest quality reel I've ever laid hands on. I own a lot of vintage reels (Abu Cardinals, Mitchell, D.A.M., Shakespeare and more) and I like all of them...all well made and very high quality compared to what is usually found in sporting goods stores today. Reels comparable in quality today cost in the hundreds of dollars, so (for most) they aren't a viable option. If you ever run across one of these Daiwas for a decent price, I'd encourage you to pick one up, clean it up and try it out. I think you would be impressed. Just as a side note, I always prefer worm gear drive reels over the beveled gears simply because of how smooth they are. The spiral bevel gears that Mitchell used in some reels are a close second in my book, very smooth gear sets too (like the 402 uses). The 302 uses a spur type bevel gear which isn't as smooth as the spiral bevel gears but is more durable. In my opinion the worm gear offers a gear set just as smooth as the spiral bevel setup and as durable as the the spur type beveled gears...you get the best of both worlds. A lot of this is personal preference of course. I love my Mitchell reels too and use them as well. There are trade offs between all of them. The old Abu Cardinals have the best drags out of the bunch. They are more of a pain to work on too. I love all of them 😁

@@TheFishingHobby With the Mitchells, even though the various models look similar externally, internally they're all different. The 408 is an ultralight. It has the Planamatic oscillator like the 302, but lacks the salt water features, like the bronze shaft and machined stainless spindle and pinion. If I see a Daiwa like this one at a garage sale I'll certainly check it out.
@GarthGoldberg
@GarthGoldberg 5 лет назад
@@TheFishingHobby Get a 302 and look closely at the bail and all the parts. The bail itself is chrome over stainless. The line guide is hard chrome over bronze. The bail trip components are all stainless, and machined, not stamped. Also, the spool spins off without affecting the drag setting. If you took the price of a 302 in the 1960's and adjusted for inflation, they'd be about $350 now. They go for around $25 to $40. A little more if they're mint. And you can still get most parts NOS.

Hello again ! I have been continuing to collect these Daiwa 8000 series reels. I now have an 8700, three 8600, and just finished restoring a very nice 8300. I had a question for you. As you know the only difference between an 8700 and an 8600 is the size of the rotor and spool. The housing and internal mechanism is the same. As I continue to try to complete my set of these remarkable reels I wondered if the 8300 and 8100 share the same relationship as their larger cousins? Does an 8300 and 8100 share the same housing and internal mechanism and only differ in the size of the rotor and spool? It would make logical sense but to date I’ve never seen an 8100 first hand such that I could compare them. This video of yours was what led me to these reels in the first place. I’ve only fished with one of my 8600 reels and used it while surf fishing. It was superb! You were also the first person I ever heard reference the Abu Garcia Suveran spinning reel. I doubt I’ll ever get one but I have gotten two Abu Garcia center drag reels which have the same basic design as the Suveran. In particular, I have an Abu Garcia CD-6 6000BG that is very close to the Suveran. Have you ever seen or used a center drag reel like this? I got very lucky and got this CD-6 from a friend by trading him 3 lesser reels for a new CD-6 center drag. I haven’t fished with it yet. I haven’t even figured how to remove the spool. LOL These Abu Garcia reels are pretty complicated and it gets worse in the larger reels. I also have a smaller CD-4 3000S center drag. Both of these are incredible reels and the smoothest I have ever touched! Hope you are doing well and I’d love it if you knew the answer to my question about the Daiwa 8300 and 8100. Thanks a ton! - Chris

The 8300 and 8100 are different reels. Both have worm gear drives, but the gears and main bodies are different sizes. I have one of the CD6 Abu Reels. @@TheFishingHobby I have a friend in Germany who found a photo constraining all 4 Daiwa 8000 series reels - 8100, 8300, 8600, and 8700. Do you happen to know if there is any difference between an 8100 and an 8100A? I do intend to find an 8100 so I can have a complete set of these remarkable reels. Of course my favorite will always be the 8600 which is why I have three of them. The 8300 I just got is a very nice reel. I’m sure the 8100 is also. Thanks for sharing your experience with the CD6 Abu center drag. I have not yet fished with my two center drags but I think they will be great. They are definitely among the smoothest reels I’ve ever touched. You are so right that the CD6 is No Suveran. I’m toying with the idea of selling off part of my reel collection in order to buy a Suveran but haven’t made up my mind about that. I just got an extraordinary rare Mitchell (Browning) 488 “Sport” reel. It is the only one I’ve ever seen and I got a great deal on it. I had to do some difficult repairs to the rotor and bail assembly but it is perfect now. It matches my Mitchell (Browning) 498 “Sport” model. @@christopherjenkins2373 to the best of my knowledge, the main difference between the 8100 and 8100a is that the 8100 has an anodized spool and the 8100a has a polished aluminum spool. My reel is actually an 8100a.even though I stated an 8100. They are basically the same reel though. This is the smoothest vintage Daiwa reel I have and I have 22 of them. My 8600 came with a broken drag knob. It works fine with a 7000C drag knob but I wanted an all original one. Yesterday I got a new never used 8600 in the box. It wasn’t cheap but I love this reel so much I was willing to pay for it. I still can’t believe I found it as these reels don’t come up for sale very often. The one I got is the only brand new one I’ve ever seen for sale. I totally agree with everything you said about it. I have 11 of the Penn worm gear 700, 704, and the Z black/gold Penn reels. None of them is quite as good as the 8600. None of mine are as smooth that’s for sure. I’ve built a quality collection of over 110 vintage surf spinning reels. Historically only the Luxor Saumon Mer is a better vintage reel in my opinion and my two are 20 years older than the 8600. That said I’d rather fish with a 8600 any day! This is my favorite of all your videos. I truly wish you could do more vintage reel videos. I value your opinion and your knowledge.

Since I have been checking out information on vintage reels, and have seen all the praise that people have for worm drives, Ihave a question. Bear in mind that this is a question from a guy who truly enjoys knowing how things work, and very few people would have a question like this and fewer still would have the answer. But I will give it a try. By casual observation, it would appear that the teeth of the drive gear would engage in a sliding motion across the face of the worm-gear teeth. In other words, it would appear that the drive teeth push each worm-gear tooth like a ramp. However, it might be possible that the the "elongated face" of each tooth-contact area is via a rolling motion. Now, knowing that everyone says the worm drives are smooth and long-lasting, it seems like the rolling action across the face of gear-tooth contact area might be the case, since a ramping/sliding motion would surely lead to rapid wear, but without a working example in front of my own eyes, I can only visualize a sliding action between the gear teeth. It's a very complex mental puzzle to envision a rolling action (if that's what is actually happening). Would you happen to know which type of gear-tooth contact is going on here - sliding or rolling? Again, it's not something I expect anyone but a specialist to know (I should find a forum where mechanical-transmission engineers get together and chat!)
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 4 года назад
The worm gear drives in a fishing reel isn't exactly the same as what most people would refer to as a true worm gear. In a standard worm gear, the worm is the motorized part and the wheel is driven by the worm. That sort of worm gear wears quickly unless there is constant lubrication because the wheel is driven by a sliding motion. In a standard worm gear, the wheel can't be turned to drive the worm. In a fishing reel worm gear, a helical wheel (the cranked main drive gear) is used to drive the worm (in this case, the pinion gear). The wheel is cut in such a way that you get both a sliding and rolling effect and it allows for the worm to be driven by the wheel. The reason why it is a strong setup is because you have the better part of 2 teeth engaged at all times. There is a disadvantage in this setup in theory because it is less efficient than a spur gear which would mean it takes more effort to crank than a spur gear. In practice though, it really isn't an issue. I have a modern worm gear drive spinning reel with 9 bearings and an infinite anti-reverse needle roller bearing and it isn't as free spinning as a standard modern spur gear drive. It is very smooth with no gear feedback through the handle, but you can't give it a push and watch the handle spin round and round for a long time like a lot of modern reels and that is due to the greater contact area on the teeth of the gear set. There are a lot of old worm gear drive spinning reels still in perfect working condition going all the way back to the 1930's when they first started being produced. There are also spur gear drive spinning reels still working correctly that are just as old. Spur gear drives usually require shimming as they wear though and worm gears don't. I've actually never heard of a broken or worn out worm gear set in a fishing reel, although it is bound to have happened at some point.
@ericl2969
@ericl2969 4 года назад
@@TheFishingHobby Thanks for that write-up. It was helpful. I think I can understand the style of gear-tooth contact being neither 100-percent sliding nor rolling, but instead, a combination of both. I can see your point about a worm-gear reel being a little less than "effortless" when reeling, but being perfectly adequate. I recently switched from using a 50-year-old Mitchell 300 (still in great condition) to a handful of modern spinning reels with a side-toothed, helical-cut drive gear engaged to a spiral-toothed pinion, and even though these are not such high-end reels (they are "decent" and well respected as long-lasting and reliable), they will keep spinning "forever" if there's no line resistance, and I can't say I really care for such an extreme lack of internal friction that the weight of the handle grip will put half a turn on the crank.
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 4 года назад
I don't particularly care for that free spinning effect myself. It doesn't help put fish in the boat, but giving the handle a good push and watching it spin is the go to maneuver in the stores haha! I have a love hate relationship with modern reels. I like some of the new features they have (oversized line rollers, instant anti-reverse and silent anti-reverse) but I don't like the serviceability of them. Most aren't really built to last for generations either. The newest reel I have that I do really like is this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WvUP6mPP3tg.html It is a cut above most modern reels in construction. I like the lightweight graphite body that has good rigidity too. Unlike most plastic body reels, this one has threaded brass inserts in the plastic so screws can be taken in and out without worrying as much about stripping out the threads like you would on a threaded plastic reel body. Gear materials are brass (drive gear) and stainless steel (pinion gear) and it is a worm gear setup. They didn't go overboard on bearing count, it has 3 sealed stainless steel ball bearings of very good quality. It has silent anti-reverse (but not instant, there is a little back play before the dog engages). I really enjoy using it. For some reason (cost would be my guess), it was the only reel in their lineup that retained the worm gear drive when they went to the graphite body reels. It is a well thought out, light weight spinner that feels right in use. I suppose they are old by most people's standards, but they are a nice blend of older and newer technology. An oddball of sorts, but in a good way!

Have you ever seen a 8700 Daiwa - the largest in this series? I’ve tried my best to locate one if only just to see one. I honestly don’t think they were sold in the USA and there must have been only a very few actually made. Even these 8600 reels are very difficult to find and if you do they are likely well used and not in the greatest condition. I’m lucky to have two of these one of which is new in the box. Theses reels were not cheap. I do believe they are one of the finest that Daiwa has ever made. I’ve watched this video often and love it! -- Chris

Thank you! Here is one a guy has cleaned up. It looks like the 8700 has a slightly larger spool and a few other differences. Have a look and see: alantani.com/index.php?topic=30159.0

@@TheFishingHobby thanks so much for this information. I honestly had never seen one and they never come up for sale on any of the main auction sites. It doesn’t look to be all that different from the 8600 except in capacity for line. Honestly I’m happy that I was able to get two 8600 reels in such great condition, I have a lot of vintage Penn reels going back to the original 1961 Spinfisher. Prior to getting the 8600 reels I thought the 704Z and 706Z were the best of the Penn spinning reels but after getting these 8600 reels I have changed my mind. Seeing your video for the first time got me determined to get this reel and I’m glad I did¡ Thank you for doing this video. No one else has done one on RU-vid.

@@TheFishingHobby My favorite Penns are my Z series reels - 704Z, 706Z, and a beautiful 722Z I restored myself. I also have 6 "greenies". My favorite is a swirl 704. My least favorite are my silver series 103, 104, and 105. I'm glad mine aren't the "C" ones that were made in China.

Hello Friend! I am amazed at how you've been able to retrieve stats for such a vintage item, thanks for making and sharing this vid. Just wondering if you know if the Daiwa 8300 can hold 10LBS lines for ice fishing? Thanks!
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 4 года назад
The 8300 is rated to hold 200 yards of 12lb test, so 10lb test would work just fine 👍

Thanks! I'm not 100% sure, but I would think they were made in the late 60's to early 70's by the looks of them. Sounds like it was a great price! Is it in good shape?

He passed away from cancer a few years ago. He loved to fish. Saltwater fishing was his favorite. He used to do a lot of fishing in the outer banks of North Carolina and in the Gulf of Mexico near Mexico Beach.

Man I'm sorry. My mother-in-law is going through breast cancer that spread to her bones before she even knew she had it. It is an awful thing. We all have been touched by it in some way. I shouldn't have asked, I apologise for that.

What was the biggest size Daiwa Surf reels
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 4 года назад
I'm not sure, but this is a large reel with a line capacity of 250 yards of 15lb test. There was a larger 8700 that had a line capacity of 250 yards of 20lb test that was in this series of reels as well and made a lot like the 8600 in this video. Daiwa may have made larger ones though that weren't in this series of reels.

I have seen them sell for $20 to $50 regularly so $149.99 seems pretty high.

The Fishing Hobby I’m thinking about the 8100 but know the UL reels go for more. Does $60-100 sound about right? And do you know what makes the 8100a different and more valuable?
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 5 лет назад
$60-100 should be able to get you one that is like new to never used w/box condition. If you don't mind one with a little wear on the paint and you are patient, you can pick up a good user reel for $25-45. Unfortunately, these don't show up for sale very often. The original 8100 would be a little heavier built than the 8100A. I have an 8100A, still an awesome reel but the spools aren't as heavy duty as the 8100. I would imagine the 8100A would weigh slightly less. The internals are different materials than the larger reels. The ultralights have brass gears which are very well made as well.
