I appreciate that! I say things during filming as off the cuff remarks. Obviously at the time I dont know how well its been captured.. I like to do all my talking as I am filming unlike most other big watch repair channels who add audio overlay in edit which to me is cheating as they know what is coming up and also can edit bits out to make it look more professional. What you see is what you get with me. Not everyone likes it given my views compared to the big boys but I am not changing!!

LOVED IT. - I stopped breathing for longer stretches than when having my Triple Bi-Pass back in 1990 🙃 Totally captivating and it really showed me that there is a wide chasm between seeing how to do it & being capable of trying .. Cheers Mike. Brilliant.

Simon is a gem, as always! I appriciate very much, that you show the struggle is sometimes real. Especially for us hobbyists. That date spring, is a spring from hell!! I like those movements. One just need to do a cpl, to learn they are built. Have a 2789 chronometre. Runns sweeet!! 1-2 sec aday, while wearing it for weeks.

I think if the spring had not flown off on disassembly , which was my fault for disengaging it I think, I’d have known the placement for assembly. That said where’s the fun in that😂

I always thought hobbies were supposed to be relaxing. Maybe you should try something less stressful like cross continent cycling, mountain climbing or bomb disposal! Way to soldier through! It’s good to see I’m not the only one who struggles with these miniature mechanical wonders.

Some things I do to de-stress from watchmaking include trying to demagnetize tools, sharpening screwdrivers, dragging a magnet across the carpet, picking through floor sweepings, and internet shopping for parts I have lost or accidentally broken.

Well done Mike - I'm sure everyone who enjoys this hobby has had at least one movement they've worked on at some time that has been a total pig and been enough make make you want to give up, chuck it in the "spares bin" and move onto another watch (I know I have). But that perseverance can teach so much and I'm glad you battled through it. And as much as I like your reviews, it's great to see you back, brining another retro watch back to life.

Thanks Jon. I’m just stubborn and don’t like to be beaten by any watch if I can help it. I think I could have Googled the date assembly and found the easy way but where is the fun in that. Watch repairs will always be the core of the channel. I took a break in part due to pain I’m getting from a hernia when I sit in that leaning forward position for long but also because I just needed it. For every video I was also repairing watches for others up to 2-3 a week and it was just becoming a chore rather than enjoyment. I’ve now cancelled all other peoples work so I can make videos and actually work on my own watches and get the enjoyment back. Reviews are just a sideline that I’m enjoying, they bring in new subscribers even though they are not watched as much and any new sub means a potential new hobbyist!

Gosh - I had no idea. I hope you're on the mend. I do find it hurts my back a fair bit having to bend over the desk that much but I had an idea to get one of those standing desk attachments; not the full (and expensive) desk, but a surface you put on a normal desk that can be raised up by 12-18 inches. I've only been doing this for the past 18 months or so and did get to a point where I found myself trying to do too many watches over the course of a week and also lost a bit of enthusiasm for it. I've cut back and am focusing on fewer and more interesting watches for myself. It seems to be working! Thanks for all your hard work and content - I always look forward to a new episode. Glad you're getting your mojo back! 😀

I stumbled on this by pure accident when I was looking for the oiling chart to this movement. I serviced this movement a few times over the years and my first experience was nothing short of a nightmare especially calendar works! Similar to eta 2452. As one gets familiar with different movements, they all become service friendly. This is not an easy movement for a hobbyist or even a new professional. Your approach and modesty towards getting the final result is beyond applaudable . Also makes this video a true example of inspiration & encouragement to anyone who loses confidence in any field, regardless of watchmaking or not. Thumbs up from Australia!!!

Thanks. Yes this one caught me out and I think that had my head have been where the camera was then I may have seen the slot for the date wheel teeth to fit through. At least now I know that when I come up against one of these in the future I will know how to approach it.

If you looked very closely at the calendar wheel that was trapping the date ring, you'll see a very small indentation in the wheel. Rotating the wheel until the indent cleared the teeth on the date ring would have enabled a safer removal. Love watching your videos even though I don't have a functional watch at the moment ( needs a new strap and I can't afford one!) Apologies, just reached the part of the video where you found this during re-assembly.

Wow high praise. I was not happy with my lighting but that was mainly because despite the lighting and everything in the same position each day I recorded I would have to re-set white balance and mess with the F stop hence some footage being brighter than others. I will get there in the end.

Bringing back some nice memories of servicing my Grandfather's/ Dad's watch, it is a lovely movement the eta 2472 slow vibration of 18000 but that's fine, i would listen to it for a long time the 18000 vph is great to listen to very soothing, pitty the hair spring was bent on yours but new old stock are still available, cheers Mike loved that, thank you. Dear Mike, love your videos, and sometimes thought, you were showing my efforts at the bench as far as flying parts, springs or not knowing anymore, how these were attached are concerned. As Nekkid Watchmaker (one of my favourite watch channels) mentioned, you had to go 12 rounds, and you did it !!! And won, thereby showing us, that the whole thing, not only in regard to watches, is about learning, patience and trying again and again, without ever giving up. All the best !!!

Well I done for getting through it and persevering. It's funny I really like working on these ETA 24xx, but made a complete dogs dinner of two AS1701s, so much so that I don't want to do another for the foreseeable. Maybe I was lucky with the first couple and now I've learnt the movement I feel confident on it. I've watch plenty of your videos where you've tackled other movements that seem more complicated no sweat. Ones I certainly would not want to tackle let alone on camera. I'm sure the next one will be a doddle for you. 👍.

Thanks. Pings are part of the hobby but just be aware to always work with springs where the movement is facing an area you can search! I use this roll top desk so aim am mine inside so I have a good chance to catch them. Sadly that strong click one found its way to the floor where I was then on my knees with a magnet until I found it again.

Thanks. I only wished I’d noticed them sooner. To be honest if the camera is not where my head should be perhaps I would have. When filming I’m at a slight angle for viewing and you can see I can’t see when I’m placing bridges sometimes.

I really enjoyed watching ever minute of this video. The new camera and lighting was OK, new equipment always takes a bit of getting used to and the video was completely watchable at all times. Seeing you struggle showed the watch was suffering more from poor design flaws more than anything else. If this watch movement made YOU struggle then this is definitely a movement to avoid if possible.

Thank you Neil. Yes the disassembly was filmed when I had just got the camera. The time in between I had improved the setup a bit and learnt more of the settings. For me it’s still very much work in progress as I still don’t quite know what the footage looks like until I hook it up to my laptop.

Thanks. Unfortunately you can’t film without fingers , it’s a common complaint but not easily overcome given how small the object you work on. Other angles would be nice but it’s difficult for me also. Space on the bench for another camera is limited plus editing is also hard. I’d be lucky to push a video a month and given I don’t make any real money on videos it’s a big ask. Had I been one of the big watch repair channels who make $1000 a video then perhaps I’d get a better setup but I need 100,000s of views per video and now I’m lucky to get 7000.

Excellent to see you back Mike and hopefully feeling more your normal self. A new video with your new kit is very good. Interesting watch to see on the table, but think you wished it was not quite so challenging. Have a good rest and you'll soon be firing on all cylinders again. 👍

Well done as usual! Any watch marked ‘waterproof’ by convention is pre 1970/72. The words water resistant was used post 1970/72. Titus and Solvil Titus were well known until the quartz crisis at which time they concentrated on the Asian market. Very popular in Asia to this day. Cheers, Geoff.

I didn’t know this I only thought it was Seiko that changed from proof to resistant in 70. Great to know it was a more broad change.

Did I miss you saying what ETA movement is was? Oh hell it's in the title. Lol had to edit this. Lol I can't believe you got the original hair spring as far as you did. More than I would have gotten for sure. I think I would have even attempted it. Lol. Kudos. It really is a nice watch with the daulphinp handset. Some times we just have to take all the lumps and bumps to learn and this one was a great learning piece. I've got a ladies seiko high beat movement that's been on my bench for a good year. So that's going to be a treat to try and finish. Lol looking forward to more great videos Michael. Cheers keep up the great work sir.

Thanks Jeff. Yes one was a good way to return to the bench…! The ladies high beats. I have a few of them and still not tackled one shame they have hardly any value. Had it been a man’s high beat they are very desirable.

I also have similar Titus watch it's bit complicated movement. But one problem with my watch is power reserve, often it stops even under use too.

I am not sure of all of them however 2700 series is very similar to your movement. Definitely a challenge of a movement for sure. @@MyRetroWatches

Just finished watching Mike, i was hoping for you to turn the intermediate date corrector wheel round but when working on a movement for the fist time mistakes happen especially when filming, don't think about it, thanks Mike.

Think it’s more a point that I just didn’t see it. Had my head been where the camera is then I may have noticed but when filming I am at a different position to what I normally work in.

The ticking was likely the image stabilization or auto aperture. Image stabilization on the lens can be triggered by vibration, and should always be off on a tripod. Auto aperture can be triggered by changes in scene brightness. Manual mode doesn't always mean full manual. Sometimes you will have systems to ensure you don't blow out highlights. The more I watch, you have some auto exposure going on. Might be in post though.

Thanks. What it was I was in full manual mode but for photos and not video. I did find it strange that either f stop or iso made little difference. Only when the penny dropped that I should be in manual filming mode (lumix G7 on one of the setting wheels) this then changed EVERYTHING!

It's definitely not designed by Seiko but I bet you wish it was. This video will be very helpful for those like me. I have a few etas I'm going to be working on soon.

Not sure the camera was in full manual mode but for photos. I didn’t realise there was a full manual mode for video. Clicking onto this fixed the issue.

I think the coolest movement is a old railroad Grade movement Like the old waltham movements. Its terrible that we can't see it ticking the whole day.

Any ideas about what caused the damage to that spring in the first place? Maybe some one tried to work on the watch in the past and yanked it?? Just wondering..

Hard to say as one of the arms was also completely out of whack and actually the reason I didn’t fit the spring to the gold one in the end. You can see it in the video just can’t recall if it’s the regulator or stud arm.

But I love your perseverance and I just want to know: who is that "Pat Ented" guy anyway??? Lol. Loving the video so far.

@@MyRetroWatches I've watched it all the way through now and the degree of difficulty with that particular movement is ... wow! It has a lot of really intricate and nettlesome parts for a rather simple timepiece, esp. one with such an elegant and clean overall look. It took a long time and I think you did a beautiful job overall. That took courage! Now I realize it's not: "Pat Ented" it's "Pat 'en Ted" ... TWO bosses! Lol.

I have a Seiko ana/digi from the late 80,s I e had a new battery fitted, but the analogue side of it just stops after a short while, and also the hands are really stiff to turn ,are these serviceable watches ?

I dont have an opinion on this really. I guess if it fits to the case then why not. I have never tried anything like that before. The PT5000 from China which is an ETA2824 clone from what I have experienced in my reviews appears to be an incredible movement.

Yeah, an impressive show of staunch perseverance over a movement designed by Satan himself. The manner in which you gave up on the quality of the Timegrapher results was indeed legendary 👍 With myself having just moved into the murky world of ETA and Unitas movements, leaving behind the relative comfort of the Vostok's with their plentiful supply of cheap spares, I sympathize greatly with your problem of waiting, searching for spares, having forum sites telling you "LOL Unitas 445 it is obsolete mate, expect to pay a fortune for every tiny part you need"😱. I've discovered this too, all the while scouring eBay until the early hours. It's enough to make anyone want to misspell Torture (Torcher) 😂 Someone needs a good Holiday🤔after fixing this monster.. Great Video Mike, we feel your pain here, but at least it ticks now.. 10/10👍

Thanks pal (I think) I’m lost at where I have even used the word torcher …!! It’s messed my mind completely pmsl. As for parts. I’m fortunate I created a Facebook group with 10k strong now of likeminded people so asking for parts or help in there is a godsend. I thought this movement was bad but wait for my next video as it puts this movement into the weeds on the bonkers scale!
