Thailand colour TV system came from West Germany same as Electricity is 220V., 50 cycles. The audio signal for W. Germany was FM. America and Japan used the same TV and electrical system which is 117-120V 60 cycles. We had a lots of issue when bringing equipment from the US back to Thailand and some case rewiring for motor changing light bulb and x former convertor is not fixing problem.

I am starting to hear those cars A LOT. Every stinkin' time they stop and engine stops and has to restart. I would find that really annoying. I would also think that starters would need to be replaced each time with the batteries. Probably a $1k job.
Back in the 80ties in ex Yugoslavia we had similar looking electronics. Things were made to last back then. It was normal for people to buy a TV, radio, hi-fi or fridge and use it for 20 years or more. Cheers! S
I have a 1958 model Emerson 24" monochrome TV in one room - and sometimes I watch it! Fortunately, I have a converter that receives the ATSC signal and converts the signal to US video to the 1948 standard.
Secam is the colour system used,the basic system is system D/K 6.5 MHz sound vision spacing, known as the OIRT system. A lot of the E European countries changed from Secam to PAL in the early 90's but keeping system D. You can get multisystem modulators on ebay alibaba etc, not expensive. Generally they cover 4.5 5.5 6.0 and 6.5 MHz. audio selectable via a menu along with the frequency. Ch21 on that set is equivalent to 14 US,471.25MHz video. carrier.Ch5 US and Ch3 OIRT are both 77.25MHz, Ch7 US and Ch 6 OIRT are common 175.25 MHz video carriers. Twiddling the vertical hold and reducing the height will give you fine 525/30 on most 625 sets. The flicker you see on 625/25 actually goes once you get used to it. I lived in the US for a year once, getting back to the UK noticed bad flicker but went in a few days. A lot of cheap dvd players in Europe had an ntsc pal button so you could switch easily from 525 to 625.
For a time it was common to use PAL digital camcorders if the final target was film as it transferred well to film. Now most camcorders have a 24P mode.
Slight correction on the title: It's not 23ть, it's actually 23ТБ, or in full: Телевизор Электроника 23ТБ-316Д. The Cyrillic Б, В, and Ь are all different letters, which represent (our English) B, V, and the Russian "myagkiy znak" softness sign, respectively. If you didn't have the instructions, docs are googleable under the TV set's actual name.

Of course, the TV set locks in on a NTSC signal. The CCIR standard (and hence OIRT which uses the same video signal as CCIR does) was designed to be somewhat NTSC-compatible to allow TV sets and video equipment to be used in the USA and Europe with only minor adaptions. Sync pulses are the same, line duration is the same, line frequency differs by just .7%. To compensate for the reduced frame rate they just added 100 lines - that's why the TV set leaves 50 lines above and below the NTSC picture unwritten.
Yes the sets of this era were somewhat flexible with the signals catched. Sound is an issue though as the gap between picture and sound differs between FCC (NTSC is for color only) and CCIR (and between CCIR and OIRT as well) the set catches either image or sound. When I came to Berlin in the early 90ies the US army TV (AFN) was still on air and they sent a FCC/NTSC signal. I was able to catch this to watch the last episodes of Dallas (hyper popular US soap of the 80ies) in original English using a similar Russian (Yunost) set. I managed to get the sound out using my short wave radio (make VEF - you also featured it here) catching some intermediate frequency from the TV. It worked quite well as I was able to adjust the vertical height to get a proper picture.
@@becconvideo VEF made some good stuff. Not only radios but also computers, a licence produced version of the Minox camera, telephones and light aircraft.
@@gabotron94 the TV caught the 525/30i signal - but no audio because the audio/video gap is different. But I was able to get the AM audio signal from some IF using my short wave radio. It worked.
I restored the only Philco Predicta here in Slovenia (ex Yugoslavia). I used the NTSC modulator and a NTSC signal from an old PC. The picture was fine, but bit twitchy. Next I tried PAL signal (into the same NTSC modulator) and I had excellent and stable picture. The vertical hold needed just a tiny adjustment and sometimes it actually synced on its own - thanks to the flywheel circuit. I even got the audio working as the modulator took care of that. The twitchiness with the 30fps NTSC signal was most likely due to 50hz mains (I only used a step down transformer), so the 60Hz signal was beating with the 50Hz (100Hz) B+ hum
Many of these East European TVs do have quite a flexible vertical sync in them. I've synced a 1980s Yugoslavian ISKRA monochrome TV to 60hz NTSC no problem.
I used to import NTSC laserdiscs. I modified my TV to correct the frame height when playing those NTSC sources (including VHS). This was done via a switch I added to the back of the set. A separate NTSC to PAL convertor was used for the colour. The issue however is that SECAM used an AM audio carrier. Maybe the set could pick up an FM signal via slope detection if tuned appropriately but obviously this isn't ideal.
They're quite flexible even in terms of horizontal sync, Polish Neptun 156 was a monitor widely used with 18kHz Hercules graphic cards while being essentially a SECAM TV (Neptun 150) minus the tuner. I use mine with NTSC signal though, because at 60Hz the flicker is slightly more bearable. Sadly Soviet color TVs aren't as flexible.
I always enjoy your videos, as a ham radio operator its interesting, thanks. I have recently repaired my Digihome multistandard 32 inch LCD TV. It has 2 VHF bands & UHF analog & digital with a smart card reader. It does the various PAL systems, PAL 60, SECAM & NTSC 4.43 & NTSC 3.58. Also does the different audio sub carriers & has a DVD player. With this TV you get a decent color picture anywhere in the world. It was a dodgy 2700 mf smoothing cap on the 12 Volt output & its resistance was on the low side. I have a HDMI to SCART converter box that has PAL & NTSC 3.58 switch & the TV works well on both no difference. In Britain we call NTSC never the same color because a TV repairman friend told me NTSC color is over the top. NTSC does not look too bad in reality & not as bad as I was told I cannot tell any difference. A great set to work on all separate boards for the PSU the TV tuner & video itself is very small board & the audio amp. When bought new around 10 years ago it was not advertised as a multistandard TV, but is & was only £300.
It says 'made in Russia' on the CRT tube, but that doesn't necessarily mean the set wasn't assembled in the Ukraine........thanks for the great video! I love all this ex-Soviet electronic gear.
Blonder Tongue AM series modulators have cable TV outputs. You can also "bend" the output frequency by using the aeronautical offset switches. I know because I repaired hundreds of those over the years. A pretty durable piece of equipment. I know because I'm a BT service tech since 1991.
You know, Shango, you can probably get an RF modulator for this thing. After 1990, ex soviet peoples had nintendo NES and other Western electronics which attach to TVs. Just like you can get a composite to NTSC RF modulator (a converter box) , you can probably get one for the Soviet standard rather than NTSC. These were dirt common in America. It was probably common in the 90s for ex soviet countries.
Cable TV channel 68 is VHF on analog as I remember & channel 68 over the air is UHF. I could be wrong but I remember back in the early 1980's getting descramblers for WHT (Wometco Home Theater) in New York City as they scrambled signal on UHF Channel 68.

As someone else pointed out SECAM is only the color encoding format, the CCIR system is what matters. For exemple: - SECAM D (used in USSR and Russia) used FM sound mod. with a POSITIVE sound frequency offset and NEGATIVE video mod. - SECAM L (used in France) used AM sound mod. with a NEGATIVE sound frequency offset and POSITIVE video mod. So while they are both SECAM they won't be compatible with each other but a russian set will work with PAL audio and video because it more or less matches. On a side note it's amazing that this set was manufactured in the 1990s: the age of asian black plastic crap TVs. The PCBs, the components, the bakelite CRT plug and the sturdy chassis make it look like a 60s-70s product. In fact it was probably designed in the 70s and the factory kept making them until going bankrupt in the new free market world. This philosophy of building things to last, to serve a specific purpose and not changing it unless necessary is what makes soviet radios and TVs very interesting in my opinion. Ironically USSR produced some goods for export to western europe like the C4353 multimeter and some of them like this meter were "not very good" to put it mildly.
Soviet stuff is very interesting because like you said, they only changed a design when necessary. But that didn't mean there was never a more modern one. They would introduce modern products constantly, just never end the production of the old one. The idea was that the old design sells for less money, and the new one for more money. But unfortunately they never understood concept of cost reduction. Someone like sony or apple can sell exact same looking product for 10 years, features never change, but inside is redesigned every year with latest manufacturing technology to make it cheaper to produce. In USSR you had Designs from 1960s produced in 1980s using 1930s manufacturing techniques, then 50 miles down the road was 1980s design made with 1980s manufacturing techniques. The new luxury colour TV that sold for extremely high price was cheaper to produce than the black and white tube tv who sold for cheap price. I blame Alexei Kosygin for killing OGAS and creating dysfunctional economic incentives
Excellent! I watched the un-boxing video yesterday. Nice looking TV! Auto stop and start battery for vehicles? May save gas, but would put more wear and tear on the starter I would think. Maybe it depends what kind of driving people do.
SECAM is just a color system, this dinosaur understands 25 fps systems and I am pretty sure it will sync with 30 fps. The only possible issue is sound, cause 6.5 MHz sound carrier here

SECAM was a common colour system in Europe alongside PAL, primarily in France, so it should be easy to get equipment for it. Black and white is the same as PAL 625 line system. NTSC is 525 lines, so the TV was probably set up correct when you got it. It was just not displaying the 50 lines on the top and bottom because they weren't there. The TV was just retracing early, resulting in a loss of vertical amplitude. The antenna plug on this particular TV is the standard European antenna jack. F connectors are only used for sat or digital on this side of the pond.
buy a TV Rubin 714 or ELEKTRON 714 with delivery from Ukraine or some country of the former USSR or from Poland or Bulgaria and make a review on your RU-vid channel! The TV supports SECAM, but you can solder a PAL color decoder into the color block.
The Rubin 714 would not survive the transport that would have to cost a fortune. Rather, it should be a portable TV, eg Elektronika C431D /ЭЛЕКТРОНИКА Ц431Д. I would love to see how the Ocean/Океан radio works in the desert. Maybe Ocean/Океан 205?
You can add PAL color decoder to it but I never saw it done right. Because this TV is DC coupled from decoder to CRT, so its not so easy to add decoder correctly.
SECAM is only the colour system. Interestingly the French had a black and white television broadcasting service post WW2 that had 819 lines and a 10Mhz video bandwidth! They were beautiful to see. True high definition B&W in 1948. They took it very seriously, hence the SECAM system. Sets were capable of excellent results and used 625 lines at 50hz like PAL. Both systems backward compatible with B&W so both would display black and white when fed with 'wrong' system.
Some of the earlier 819 sets struggled with that IF video bandwidth,feeding video input to an 819 set direct gives a very sharp picture.There was a reduced bandwidth 819 system used in Luxembourg /Belgium till the early 70's, system F I think as opposed to E, the wideband one.
According to older folks in the TV repair business this was only better on paper because by the time it was received by your antenna and went through the TV circuitry it was as good as 625 lines broadcast.
@@Moonwalker917 Vertical resolution can't be reduced by bad reception or tuner, 819 is always 819. but horizontal resolution, you are absolutely right. in the UK we have (had) 5.5Mhz video, and no TVs of 1960s could show it. Eventually B&W TVs became sharp enough, but then colour with 4.43 cutoff was well established, so constant chroma noise ruined it anyway!

31:40 Might as well turn off the color subcarrier if possible, that'll get rid of weird checkerboarding due to non-NTSC filtering :) I swapped some filters in my Sony Watchman to make it receive 6.5M sound instead of 5.5M, but those were ceramic piezo ones. Audio circuitry didn't seem to mind that, being a simpler limiter + slope filter type, but I feel I might have lost some sound sensitivity since I did not change IF filter, 39-something MHz, it probably needs wider one and those are niche. This thing probably will have some LC filters with tunable "cans" just like Silelis 405 D-1 I had ages ago, might be possible to retune it. Maybe.
The JVC CX610 6 inch TV, non US version had switchable 5.5,6.0 and 6.5 MHz audio, it up converted the audio to a common 10.7MHz IF. Colour was Pal Secam, but not the French version for system L.. They did another model especially for that!
@@HughTVDX Fancy. Easier to have a retunable LO and a common filter in this case, I suppose. Probably has a PLL demod too. I initially wanted to get an universal FD-20AEB Watchman, but ended up getting normal US FD-20A by my own mistake. I decided to keep it intact and bought a slightly beat up european FD-10A to mess with. After some digging, it turned out that no Watchman ever had 6.5M sound IF anyway, so experiment it was :) It's a bit pointless really, since SDRs can transmit analog video in most forms in software ('hacktv' utility is impressive, even does ancient 400 line British system, and some ones I never heard about before), but I still have some analog channels broadcasting I wanted to try receiving.
@@UHF43 so did Matsushita *(National+Panasonic), Sanyo and other Japanese brands. These multi-system VCR'a sometimes marketed as 7 or 8 standard/system. They were primarily marketed in the ME region along with similarly multi system TV sets. These countries seem to have gotten the full options as "standard" nothing less. In Europe only Grundig made a one holy grail multi standard VCR, which recorded / converted to/from NTSC/PAL/SECAM. Sorry forgot exact model number. I remember the Japanese multi-system counter parts could disPlay any system but did not convert, but they were much beautifully made with side wooden panels and luxurious champaigne metal finishing. Eye candy.
Regarding the soviet Solid-state tv sets there are 3 main things: 1. Good schematics 2. Very bad capacitors 3. Poor CRTs even new In Bulgaria we used to have color TV set called Elektron c380, which was all soviet except the CRT. We put Toshiba one and with this configuration the tv was very reliable through the years. Even 4 decades later.

I don't even know how you could charge a Li-ion battery to it's mid point. That must involve a special charger. Most of my stuff that runs off of Li-ion batteries are emergency devices I keep for tornadoes or ice storms here in Northeast Oklahoma. Most of the time, they just sit there on the shelf, but they also have to be ready for emergencies. I don't really know how much longer they would last if stored at it's mid point vs a full charge. It seems like I get a decent run out of them anyway. Kids today will never appreciate black and white TV. It might have been colorless, but it still worked. It's existence made color television a real treat.
I use an iCharger 106b for my bicycle light li-ion packs. It has a storage mode that charges a battery to around 3.7v if your not going to use them for a while. As to lithiums sitting on the shelf fully charged, I've had some 18650 cells in a box for over a year or two & they only lose .2/.5 of a volt. Much more dependable than the earlier niMH & niCADs.
The TV is post soviet, the picture tube is manufactured in Russia 1995. The orange transistors are KT315x (NPN with logo) or KT361x (PNP without logo), these have fragile legs._
I just played for hours with my ATARI 2600 clone on a 10" 1971 Crown B/W Tv-radio (rebranded to Universum SK903). It is in factory original condition. It went all well for the first two hours, then I noticed the picture is wiggling a bit and a dark bar slowly travels vertically through the picture. Probably AC hum, I disassembled it and the main filter is a bit warm. There are a few grey Marcon oil caps in it, one on the flyback, and that cap is a bit warm, too. And it has two 800V 22nF Matsusita, seemingly paper capacitors across each mains wire and the metal frame!!! Geez, I should have checked before I started using it...
Sounds like mains noise suppression capacitor, should be replaced with modern class X or Y (check which for your circuit). Old ones can explode in big cloud of smoke, but is otherwise harmless.
That crisp-sharp picture is so much similar to one of Shiljalis 402D, also USSR-made from 80's but with front-mounted controls and smaller screen. Same undestructible frame. Also, for some reason I retained the memory that Shiljalis came with a scheme with appendix for the jump-tuner connections for PAL, NTSC and USSR SECAM (this one has continuous tuner).
That was a nice little Soviet TV, geez that sheila on the telly, was funny especially the way she was saying Foyer as like foyaahh. Well maybe that is the way you say it stateside, here i say it the way it looks but is more like foya. That standards converter was pretty pricey at 12 g's.
This vid reminds me that I wanted to send a little late 80s portable soviet TV over right when that Yunost video came out ("Юность 401 Television Russian USSR Built 1976"). Wonder what happened to that TV and if it ever ended up getting powered up. Interestingly enough, this Elektronika TV has the same power connector as the one I wanted to send over
SECAM is the French analog standard,.some converter boxes have the option. I had a JVC vcr that did NTSC,PALand SECAM. I bet you could find one. These VCRs have PAL instead of F connections.
There is Automatic Frequency Control slider on the back, you tune with it in off position, then put it on for heterodyne to lock on to signal. Orange capacitors are of ceramic thin metal film type(silver). There is clear marking "Made in Russia" on the CRT and GOST (goverment standard) is from 1989 so it definitely was never produced in the USSR.
Yeah that set should sync right up to NTSC 60Hz/15734Hz. All of my PAL-era B&W sets here in Spain work with no problem. Color is something else, and of course sound as well as you mentioned in the video. But picture should work just fine, you might have to adjust H and V hold a bit.
Looks like the formats to look up with regards to sync timing, frame rate and such are "CCIR system D" and "CCIR system K". No need to worry about SECAM per se because it's a monochrome set and 'exists' below the color layer.
Regarding the California fires, due to temperatures in the triple digits. I've been living in Arizona most of my life and the downtown temperatures have risen into the triple digits during the summers every single year. Sometimes downtown temperatures will rise as high as 125 degF due to the heat island effect and of course the buildings will immediately burst into flames. Impossible you say! Ridiculous you say! Well, here the laws of physics are different. Unlike the rest of the world where it takes temperatures exceeding 450 degF in order to start a fire, our fires start anytime temperatures go above 100 degF.
Lived in the high desert of Oregon for years back in the '80s. Every summer was triple digits, and every winter was double digits below zero. Still that way... crazy how that happens.
As far as I know. the only difference between PAL and SECAM is how the color information is encoded. I do know that both PAL and SECAM are interchangeable if all you want is a black and white picture.
Yes this is true. But PAL/Secam/NTSC are often used to describe whole system, not just color. So for USSR Secam its CCIR D/K system which describes B/W part of the signal, sound frequency distance to picture frequency (6,5 MHz) and TV channels freqeuencies. For western european PAL its CCIR B/G, 5,5MHz. TV channel bandwith and frequencies differ in VHF band between those 2 systems but are the same in UHF.

Interesting video, thanks! You would like to deal with him. Our equipment does not accept a signal in NTSC. They work in SECAM or PAL (the image may be black and white on color TVs from the USSR) and a 6.5 MHz sound carrier. I connect them Openbox S3 CI HD. He is able to transmit a signal to VHF/UHF in PAL and NTSC. It is advisable to change electrolytic capacitors in Soviet devices (especially 1-100 microfarads) and paper ones (МБМ) which would not be a problem in the future.
I would date that TV somewhere between 1987 and 1995 perhaps. Its flavor and design reminds me of the early 1990s sets before digital tuning took over and the color of the case and buttons look similar to US analog sets of that era.
