This tutorial explains nuances about beat-mixing on vinyl. This is a companion video to a more comprehensive earlier video that talked about beat-mixing theory, and practical beat-mixing on CD players. You can find that first video at:
• CD Beatmixing - DJ'ing...
I forgot to write down track listings when I recorded this video, and right now my records are 6000 kilometers away. Here are partial track listings of the ones that I've been able to identify so far, and I'm trying to figure out the others (L/R means left/right deck):
17:00L - Cirrus, "Boomerang" (The Light Remix)
22:30R - Quivver, "Boz Boz" (Central Rush Remix)
23:30R - Breeder, "New York FM" (Van Bellen Remix)
28:00R - Seragaki, "Ryukyu Underground" (Quivver Remix)
34:30L - DJ Fist, "Beat The Drums" (Original Mix)
36:45R - Mike Morales, "Dream Shattered" (Original Mix)
I also have a page on my main website devoted to teaching people the basics of turntable setup, etc. Here's a link:
www.djbolivia.c...
Unfortunately, as of early 2014, RU-vid annotations are not visible to mobile viewers, only to users watching on desktop browsers. I use annotations quite frequently to post clarifications and additional information during the video. For the best educational experience, you might prefer to watch this video in a desktop browser rather than on mobile, unless RU-vid eventually fixes the mobile annotation deficiency.
This is part of the "Learn To DJ" video series by Jonathan Clark, who is well-known in the industry as DJ Bolivia. To see a list of other DJ-related tutorials by DJ Bolivia, go to:
www.djbolivia.c...
On a side note, I get a lot of requests from people who want me to review their DJ mixes. Unfortunately, I am extremely busy. I'm already turning down paid projects, and I don't have time to review mixes. I wish it was otherwise.
You can also learn more about Jonathan Clark at these sites:

I also have a video online showing the recording of an episode of my weekly radio show, using turntables. Here's a link:
• Example Tech-House DJ ...
That video was produced using the audio feed from my headphones, so it would be useful to a beginning DJ who wants to experience things from the DJ's point of view. If you'd rather watch the same thing but with the audio feed that the audience hears, watch this video instead:

Great video! Like you, I've been spinnin vinyl for many many years now. I spent numerous hours perfecting this art and use similar techniques as you do. Although no two DJs touch the record the same way, the outcome is the same; a perfect flawless mix. With a whole new generation of kids who fancy themselves "DJs" using a laptop and a controller, I fear that we are a dying breed with our 1210's. Real DJs will always use vinyl and beatmatch and pitch incoming records without any digital aids.

Always keeping an open mind to embrace the digital era, Infinite possibilities. Trying doing a search on eBay for "house vinyl" or "techno vinyl" or "tech house vinyl" and see what comes up. Use different terms because sometimes people mislabel their genres. I've gotten a lot of decent stuff from eBay over the years, although it takes a lot of digging around because there's a lot of crap there too. But it helps that now, with RU-vid, if you see the name of a record on eBay you can often find it on RU-vid to listen to the whole track.

djbolivia where do you get your records at? I only have a few EDM vinyls, being Deadmau5, a few Daft Punk and one from Armada, but I haven't found a good place to find stuff like yours.
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 10 лет назад
It's definitely getting harder to find good EDM on vinyl in North America. I used to buy most of my stuff from Play De Record in Toronto or Yoshitoshi in Washington, but they've both stopped selling vinyl. I still order occasionally from Juno or Hard To Find Records in Britain, but that's less frequently. If you're Ok with older tracks, you can probably find a lot of stuff on eBay. Do a search on eBay for "vinyl records lot trance" or "vinyl records lot techno" or similar. I've gotten some pretty good deals there, although sometimes some pretty bad music too.

What does "not driven by a pullie/pully" mean?
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 10 лет назад
Some turntables which are "driven by a pulley" use a rubber belt attached directly to the motor and to the platter, so the platter is physically rotated by the belt. The "direct drive" turntable uses magnets, and no physical connection, to make the platter spin.

hi DJ Bolivia thanks for video,i have a bit problem when im play long track like 7 min house mix,with serato my records on the getting dusty on records,Always,I have not idea where this dust come from,Have u any idea? hope hear soon,regards,Magic
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 10 лет назад
Yes, it's pretty common. As the record is playing a slight electromagnetic charge builds up which attracts dust from the air in the room. You can wipe that away easily with a record brush. And most of the time, it's not a big problem for audio quality. I've even played at raves or in clubs that were so hot and sweaty that condensation from the ceiling or sweat from my forehead was dripping down on the records, and the needle would play right through it.

This shows how tricky it is to beatmix on vinyl. To my old school ears, I prefer the imperfections in the mix; it makes it more human, more live, and more real. Eg at 25:30, it's slightly out, but you know that the DJ is working. What's great is when the DJ pulls it in to perfection. I like that. I understand though that that's a generational thing; many out there will only be used to the sound of perfection, which is what you get with mp3- and CD-based mixing.
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 10 лет назад
Very insightful, I couldn't agree more. I always remember listening to DJ's at raves in the 1990's and being fascinated with how they'd pull an out-of-sync mix back together.

I should point out that I wasn't trying to mix smoothly ... I was trying to illustrate mixing so beginners can understand it better. A beginning DJ is going to have a hard time even understanding if the new track is too fast or too slow. If you want to listen to recordings of some of my DJ sets where I was actually trying to mix properly, I've got quite a few online.

Remember when Djs used to cover thier labels and write random shit so the other Djs wouldn't bite thier tracks? I just thought about that when you mentioned respecting other Djs records. Where I'm from, that shit would be long gone if a DJ left it behind. lol

When you have levelled the balance, you are supposed to turn the graded ring to zero. Then you increase the tracking weight by turning the counterweight so that you don't have to "add" the tracking weight to the non-zeroed ring. Incidentally, the needle protector contributes a significant weight (at this pivot distance), so it should be removed during balancing and be very careful that you don't damage the stylus. This is standard operating procedure.
@djbolivia

+puggles1973 That's a great bit of advice.

Nice video. I've been practicing digital DJing for years, just in my own personal time. But i'm now going to invest in a couple of budget mixing decks and any LPs I can get a hold of. The bar thing can be really frustrating. I know some artists want to make their tracks unique, but they make them more of a pain for mixing as well.

the original Dj pitch on the mk2s is lot better don't waste your time installing a mk5 pitch for just a clicking sound, the motor is also better on SL1200 mk2 original, the mk3s was a flop in the UK, they failed to sell, the mk5s was ok but the parts not as good as original builds
@jackchristian824
@jackchristian824 6 лет назад
No. The pitch fader on the mk5 is identical to the pitch fader on the mk3d - same part. You say the 5 was "ok" but the 3 wasn't, yet they both have the exact same pitch faders. So how can you then say they are so they different? It clearly sounds like you don't know what you're talking about "different motors blah blah the mk3 flopped in the U.K" - no they did not. People bought Mk2's and immediately put mk3 faders in them - and still do - because the faders are better. No one wants a click on the zero point. The mk3 and mk5 are improved versions on the mk2. Plain and simple. The only reason mk2 is "so much better" is because of its iconic history for they time - but they are NOT better turntables. They got superseded. That's why everyone took out the old mk2 faders mate.

i find when you're setting the weight of the cart ,screw the weight back so it is level with the back of the tonearm then reset the dial on the tonearm weight back to 0 then turn weight to what the cart specifies and when setting the anitskate use a blank sided record with the needle on it as you move the antiskate while the record is playing it will find the correct setting by staying in the one spot and not skate across the blank sided record the closer it gets to the start of the record the better. i also find that slip mats also have an affect on the set up of the decks ..i prefer a heavy slip mat so i have to alter the height of the tonearm too , but if if you are just in to beat matching the tonearm should be level (use a small spirit level) but if your in to scratching set the height higher and take the tone arm weight off and reverse it so you don't have the dial at the front which means you can get more turns on it to put more pressure on the needle to keep it in the groove more as for slowing the record down i find it best to ride the pitch control back and forth till you find the correct tempo , but if your not too comfortable doing that i suggest forefinger and thumb to apply a small amount of pressure on the spindle of the deck and rotate them to the opposite direction i find it less intrusive and more less noticeable if you are in the middle of a mix that seems to be running out of sync than if you touch the platter or touch the record and as you slow the record down adjust the pitch at the same time .

Phenomenal tutorial! I’m definitely not a fan of those who black out their records labels and gate-keep tracks they didn’t even produce, that doesn’t help any dj. If someone likes a track let them know what it is so they can hear it again. Unless it’s their track they produced, I think it’s selfish behavior.

I haven't used them, although the price seems to be attractive for starter gear. The reviews have been ok. If you're on a budget, I think it's worth considering. Although look at the 4000's too, I think they're supposed to have stronger motors?
@djkoz78

Edgars Ļebedevs I know this comment is old but from everything I've read its a solid turntable with a powerful direct drive motor which is what you need for when you drop it on the one and a consistent rotating of the record so you have less wow and flutter. Pretty good reviews from professionals and the consumer market as well.

When we first hear someone say "Do you beat mix?" We were like wtf is that? Since the late 70's, since the 1580 KDAY mix shows it was always called BLENDING. Who tha fuck came up with "beat mixing'?

Hi there , great tutorial as always Dj Bolivia !!! I wish I could afford to mix on vinyls, probably one day, so for the moment I'd like to learn the skills , is it posibble to emulate mixing vinyl on cdj 900's? What comes to my mind is practicing groove riding, beatmatching without seeing the bpm's of the song, but I wonder how to emulate the feeling of touching the vinyl and the jog wheel? Thanks
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 8 лет назад
+Brian Munoz (Trapnest) They're actually surprisingly similar. The only difference is that I think CDJ's can be slightly easier sometimes because the digital technology keeps the speeds absolutely perfect. With vinyl, if your turntable isn't in great working condition there can be a tiny bit of variation in the speed which makes it harder to keep a long mix in sync perfectly.

Guys pitch bend. You need to slow the platter with your finger or speed it up you don’t just leave it like that I’ll do a video if anyone wants I beat match up to 220 BPM you need to ither tap the player gently or finger on the record and speed it up gently and learn the toutch and bass only one one track then switch over having bass up with two tracks sounds horrible they step over each other and blow sound systems. I’ll teach anyone just reply I’ll make a video

Great Vid. It's nice to go over the basics again. I am on Traktor Scratch Pro 2 and I find that in my mixes I make for myself I kind of cheat to get the songs cue'd up fast by looking at the bpm. I get it close, then nudge slow down etc. I think the best way to stay true, is to know how to do mixing this method, specially if you go to a club atmosphere as you will never know what to expect for gear. I used to be a Virtual DJ guy and I learned the hard way that you need to know the basics and train your mind and ear to listen to speed discrepancies. Again good job and Love your selection of tracks.

38 minutes in... Always put the sleeves under the deck the record plays on. The feet of a 1210 are perfectly spaced so any sleeve - even a weird-sized one like Blue Amazon remix of Jayn Hanna, Lovelight will fit right under there You'll never misplace one again - Thank me later ;)

I can't see the vinyl clearly, because I'm on a bad connection, but it might be a track by Seragaki called "Ryukyu Underground," either the Sunrise Mix or the Quivver Mix.

then look up what the pressure should be for that needle and apply it. then adjust the antiskating until the needle doesn't drift to the centre
@MYEVILTWIIN
@MYEVILTWIIN 3 года назад
A stylus (needle) should last at least 1000 plays but take in to affect of rocking it back and forth on the beat you can lessen the life of the stylus (needle) by half , if you want to set up the anti skate use a 1 sided record .... I know they are hard to come by but most of us should have 1 .... put the needle on the blank side right at the start and adjust the anti skate until it sits still on the record without moving towards the centre (center if you’re American) or skating back off towards the pitch slide ...... me personally I like to take the tone arm weight off and turn it back to front put it all the way on to as far is it will go on the tone arm set it to zero and dial off 3grm on my concord carts then adjust my anti skate that just my preference. Doing that with the weight just seems to give that extra little bit of pressure to keep good contact with the record as for setting the height of the tone arm again this is my own preference I’ve always had mine set between zero and one , with the tone arm being at a straight level whilst resting on a record plus a slip mat obviously adjusting with the thickness of the slip mat

How do you get the bpm to match up perfectly? If one is off by even 1 bpm it will eventually start to be noticeable and lag after a few minutes.

on some turntables you can reset the weight markings after you balance the tone arm, so when you need to put 3 grams you can just put it to 3.

you are doing it wrong when balancing the tonearm. This is how you do it... when the tonearm is balanced, you set the dial to zero (not the weight on the back, but the front dial) once the front dial is set to 0, then you add the grams with the back weight.

A quick thing about setting the weight of your tonearm is to find where it balances (or floats) then you only turn the black grading scale to zero at that point. Then you turn the entire weight with the grading (in this case) to 3 grams.

I didn't care about monitors so, I'd rather put on cue both channels (the one that's currently live, and the one I am preparing) and use my headphones to prepare the mix
@djbolivia

Justin Pitlik If you're just interested in playing the music back, just the turntable and records and a speaker (and a piece of equipment such as an amp to get the sound into the speaker) are all that you need. But if you are going to mix songs between a couple turntables, you should look at buying a "DJ mixer" of some sort.

+djbolivia hey friend do yo recommend any brand that I could buy for at least 400$ for a turntable and mixer
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 8 лет назад
+mike Harris That price range is pretty low. I think you'd have to spend around $400 per item to get something that works decently, even in a budget range. You could probably look at the Behringer NOX mixers though, those may be a viable option. Do more research than just my advice, but check out this article as an example. You'll probably pay around $400 or more for a decent budget turntable, or a used Technics 1200, but you might be able to do better than that on a mixer: djtechtools.com/2014/04/15/in-search-of-the-perfect-budget-mixer-part-one/

What type of music is this and where can I get lots of records like this in bulk for low cost? I don't have a shop in my area the shops that do sell records are 60s 70s music shops, I live in England btw

Trance or prog house I think, depends who you ask really. Try eBay if you want bulk. It will be absolute shite that no one would ever want though. If you want to get stuff you actually want go on Discogs.

hey, eBay or gumtree would be your best bet! however there must be a record shop near you somewhere! I often prefer going to shops to buy mines so that I can have a listen first and I often just spend time going through the house/techno sale boxes and listen to them and buy the best ones for around £2-5 each

if the tonearm is skipping, you shouldn't put more weight to it. It is your antiscate that is not prefect. And you shouldn0't slow down the track by touching the platter (it can get rusty from your hand and also you are damaging the motor etc), you should slow it down by the pitch (moving it up and down) or touching the outside of the track (where it is no grooves).

I have a question for someone knowledgeable on vinyl and turntables.So I was at a party and at one point there was a song playing on vinyl and I put my hand on the vinyl an forced it to go backwards in order to achieve that rewinding sound (moved it backwards for about a second) afterwards the music was playing great with no distortion but the next morning the host tried to say it was my slight movement of the vinyl that broke the needle although the music sounded fine after I did it (it now sounds like a radio on the wrong station) was this my fault?
