You didn't put down the metal post Amazon no#I have the exact same porch that you do and I want to do the exact same thing you did to your front stairs with both railings on each side the vinyl with the metal inserts. Instead of using treated wood. Thank you. Good video as well as information how to do it.

For me, the ideas in ru-vid.comUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE Plans were a starting point for building different sheds . Ryan gives ideas that allow an individual to draw nicest conclusions into the design and building of his or her own shed.

Nice tutorial. Only question I have is that the link you posted for the post is the "sleeved bagged" version but the one you seem to use in the video is the traditional one. Any reason for the difference and what exactly is the difference between the two (the traditional is 12 and the bagged is double that price 24). Thanks.

WOw, Your videos are such a cut and above most DIY posts. THank you so much. I just repaired my concrete steps and wanted to put railings on to code. Please tell me the size of the concrete anchor bolts . Are they 1/4 by 5" or 3/8 by 5" . ALso the washers and shims look to be a plastic/rubber kind. Thanks again

@elchicano65
@elchicano65 3 года назад
I appreciate and enjoy your work. I have a question that pertains to new precast concrete residential steps. First, can you attach these railings to precast steps using a hammer drill without breaking our cracking the concrete. Secondly if you can do this how far from the edge of the step should you be for the holes to be safely drilled. All the videos I have watched make no distinction between the use of hammer drilling on precast concrete or on poured concrete. Thanks.
@dawnd4471
@dawnd4471 2 года назад
Im wondering the same thing. Also wondering about the use of silicone in the drill holes for colder climates to prevent cracking with the freeze and thaw
@brianschrier6193
@brianschrier6193 2 года назад
I generally us a 3" space from the edge of the porch to the outside edge of the post base. That way it reduces the chance of breaking the concrete corners & edges off. If you break the edge of your porch, then you are in for more work than originally intended. I will gladly sacrifice a couple inches of porch for the safety of concrete not cracking due to drilling or someone falling into the railing.

Great, you're drilling with a 1/4" X 6 " masonry drill bit but are you also using 1/4" bolts? I don't believe you mentioned the size of the bolts. Can anyone respond? Thanks much!
@Deckbuilding
@Deckbuilding 6 лет назад
Hi Gary, a 1/4" concrete bolt as showon in this video will need a 1/4" masonry bit. Concrete bolt diameters are measured inside the thread. The agressive treading goes beyond the hole you drill. So when buying concrete bolts ( not tap con screws) the size of the bolt is the size of the drill bit. Thanks for watching.

Awesome video. I was wondering how to make the posts plumb because my new porch has a noticeable pitch. Where did you get those shims?
@brianschrier6193
@brianschrier6193 2 года назад
The shims usually come with the post kit. Post mounting kits are usually sold separately. I use the anchors that have the sleeve that draws up with the tightening of the nut on top. Ive used tapcons before & had horrible luck with them holding. Remember, its not just about form, its also about function. These rails will have to hold up anyone who stumbles & falls against them. So make sure your posts DO NOT MOVE when tightened down.

Hi, Masons repointed stairs and put on new granite treads. Said they wouldnt put my old iron railing back on because it wasn’t up to code so I bought a pvc stair kit at Home Depot. They wouldnt put them on. So I need to do it myself. How would I do this with granite treads? What drill bit/screws would I buy. Cant’t use the screws that come with the railing kit, way too long. Thx in advance for any help! Amy

You can use some PL construction glue for the base plates for extra strength!
@Deckbuilding
@Deckbuilding 6 лет назад
Are you talking about the trim base rings ? if so you can squeeze a little rubber cement in there to hold them in place. I have also used a clear silicone on the top side of the base rings to hold them in place. I wouldn't use Pl construction glue as you may see the discolor and it would look sloppy.

I thought aluminum and concrete had an undesirable chemical reaction that causes corrosion. How are the actual posts holding up (under the sleeves)? Any corrosion happening at the aluminum post bases after a couple years? Thanks in advance. Trying to figure out what to do for our own railing replacement.
