Hello i am Craig Heffernan and the owner of Heffernan Construction. I have chosen some construction jobs we actually contracted and created "How To Videos" I hope you find the videos useful and entertaining. Visit our website @ www.craigheffernan.com
Seems the depth of the holes with concrete would vary so I don’t see how you could attach the 2 posts with the board and insert into the hole and they match perfectly. Your 1/2 bag of concrete cut was not precise or the holes.
Railing not to code. Railing needs to extend to the landing and can’t start on first step. Building inspectors here in New England would make you rip it out and do it again.
Should have used 6x6 posts. And notch the band inside the post for support. And thats NOT HOW YOU BUILD STEPS. you marked out the stringers and didnt cut the pattern out and set tour treads on top of the stringers like any jake leg carpenter should know....?? Then put 2x4s on the stringers? Thats silly man....
I also love that he involves his kids, or his kids and some of their friends I love that I teach my daughter things while I'm on jobs, she has learned actually quite a bit it's awesome that to feel that, since schools take all the trades out of everything now and expect them to be nothing but deadhead paper pushers, these kids need trades so that they know how to do things in life not just pushing paper
This looks amazing. I'm planning on doing one for our own pool in our own garden, and just had a question purely out of curiosity. When you dug the 3ft holes for the posts you filled them up with concrete, then once it was dry you put the posts on tip, and filled in the rest of the hole with dirt. Why not fill it in with concrete to hold the poles steady and in place? Would love to hear your advice.
So i found this video to be the most comprehensive how to buid a deck with no frills for a beginner. I decided to go ahead and attempt my first deck with my dimensions using these tips/methods. 1st takeaway is rent the damn machine to dig those holes 2nd takeway dont skip the strings, my post wernt quite lined up, i was able to fudge it pretty good and everything looks good after trimmed out. 3rd take away and this is a big one, code no longer allows you to bolt the beams to the posts as this video showed. And the jury is still out whether I have to rebuild my entire deck. My fault for not checking regs first, but just want everyone else to know that.
